Hey yall,

Myself and a few buddies will be in the VA beach area next Monday/Tuesday on the way to Myrtle for a golfcation. We're choosing to break the trip up by staying in VA beach for two nights, but while we're down there I'd like to get a round or two in. Any recommendations for the area? I looked at Bay Creek which appears to be the 1 seed, but the guys house were staying in says it's to far from his address. I've done the whole golfsdvisor thing, but looking for some better input. Thanks for the help.

-Adam

Bay creek is worth the drive 2 18's with great views.  Signature at West Neck and Virginia Beach National would be the next best courses in Virginia Beach that are open to the public.  Riverfront is also a good option, but a little farther away in Suffolk.

Thanks for the recommendations. Of VBN or West Neck which do you prefer? Both about the same price. Leaning towards West Neck.

West Neck. VBN was a buy.com tour stop for a couple of years when it was TPC VB. Don't forget Herron ridge.

West Neck is a Palmer course, some people love or hate them.  I don't mind them and I would prefer the Signature at West Neck.  VBN is longer and like NCHacker said used to be a TPC.

Would play West Neck 10 out of 10 times over VBN.

But Bay Creek is worth the drive up. Both Bay Creek courses are way better than others mentioned.

I agree, well worth it.  The drive up from VB isn't that far.  Beautiful views of the bay and 2 good courses as opposed to backyards.

I don't mean to thread jack, but I will be in Norfolk in mid July with 1 or 2 days to play. I am leaning towards Riverfront as it is a Doak design and only 15 minutes from where I will be staying. Is this a good track? Any other recommendations are also appreciated as I am unfamiliar with the area.

I'd say Bay Creek. It depends on where in VB you're staying but the ride isnt too bad. Both courses have great views, great holes, and a nice Bar in the clubhouse. West Neck is nicer than VBN but like parrnj said you have to deal with backyards. Williamsburg has a few nice courses as well and they're a little closer than Bay Creek.

Riverfront is one of the better public courses in the area.  Probably the best that's close to Norfolk.  Depending on how much time you have it may be worth the drive to Bay Creek.  Bay creek is just a totally different experience than golf in the suburbs/neighborhoods.

Bay Creek is definitely worth the drive, but in VB/Norfolk you've GOT to hit up West Neck.  Last but not least, a hidden gem that is worth a round just south of Norfolk is Bide-A-Wee.  After it's renovation a few years back, the course is just a hidden gem that gets overlooked so often.

I grew up in the Hampton Roads are and Riverfront was always a great course.

Bide-A-Wee is another good one close to Norfolk. Not long, but challenging and always in good shape. Full disclosure, I haven't played there in a few years.

Bay Creek is worth the drive. I played both courses over the last 2 days and they're some of the best I've ever seen.

Scenery is amazing as many holes run along the ocean. Challenging, but fair. Full practice facilities too.

How crowded was it?

Do they have stay and play rates?

They definitely have stay and play deals.  Check their website.

I have a golf weekend lined up with a buddy coming to town from Orlando, and I'm pumped for it.  I live near the Ocean Front in Va Beach, we have the following lined up:
Friday pm - Bayville (worked a few channels to get access)
Sat am - Golden Horseshoe Gold
Sat pm - Golden Horseshoe Green
Sun am - Bay Creek (Palmer)

From ocean front, Bay Creek is about an hour drive, Golden Horseshoe is about an hour and 10 minutes.  Touching on earlier threads, West Neck is about 30 minute drive depending on lights, VBN and Heron Ridge are about the same.

From my experience, West Neck and VBN just don't have the maintenance that the Bay Creek would have.  I like the VBN layout better than West Neck or Heron, but it is the least well maintained.  Riverfront is a good blend of decent maintenance and track, it would be 45 minutes from Ocean Front.
