Sorry for the newb question, but an example of something soft stepped would be putting an 8 iron shaft in a 7 iron? Hard stepped would be vice versa?

other way around - 8i shaft in 7i is hardstepped and vice versa.

thanks drpino.

Assuming you're putting an 8 iron shaft in a 7 iron (hard stepped) and you still retain the standard length how does that really change the true flex? With flighted PX the ball flight would be lower, more 8 iron like in the 7 iron but in the 7 iron distance? So we're not really changing the flex as much as the ball flight?

Tmason, single soft/hard stepping shafts in either direction changes flex 1/4-1/3 of a full flex.  In the example you've given, the change in ball flight (lower) would be a result of the stiffer shaft keeping all other variables equal.

correct me if I am wrong but isn't the s300 and s400 the same exact flex??   The only difference is the s400 is heavier...    I played S400 for years and just went to PX 6.5's not to long ago.  I have a 6 iron SS of 95 and the 6.5's were too stiff for me.  I sent the clubs back and had Taylor Made put in 6.0's.   Could not be happier with the shafts.  My opinion is to go on Rifle shafts web site check out the chart for your SS and play one less stiffness, that is what I had to do.

A length question: my understanding (possibly mistaken) is that if play PX shafts over standard length that they will play a little stiffer than they would at standard length, while DGs play a little weaker in the same situation.

I have PX 6.0s in one set of clubs but am interested in a little more spin, which I understand DGs to provide. I play the PX 6.0s .5" over standard length. Given the general guideline that PX 6.5 = DG X100, how would a PX 6.0 that's .5" over length compare with a DG X100 that's .5" over length? If my understanding of the impact of additional length to flex is correct, it would seem that this would bring the relative flexes closer together.

Thoughts?

I posted this on another Dynamic Golf Vs Project X before I saw this thread. Thanks for any help...

I heard that some 75 of the top 100 players in the world were using PX shafts. Hmm?

I do have a question though, I went from a set of Titleist 695MB w/ 6.5 PX's to a combo I10/S58 with X100. I'm also 6'7 and these X100's feel way to heavy and non responsive. I'm a D-1 golfer and could do anything I wanted with those 695's (as far as height goes) but with these Ping's they just shoot straight up in the air. Thinking about selling them and getting some AP2's with PX's or sending the Ping's off for the X100 Light or the PX's. Any suggestions?

Email or call Joey3108 (Joe Kwok) with your problem and he can set you on the right path.  Just go back up this page and you will see a couple of his posts.  One of the best sources for info on shafts on this site.

Joe: Have you tried the Nova Tech BTR shaft from Kim Braily, I just bought a set of KZG forged evolution irons with stiffness of 5.5 shaft, only one short range session so far, feel softer than the S300s, really smooth shaft with some kick at release. PLayed cobra forged with S300 for 4 years prior.
Thanks,
Brad

Nope , not yet!

They haven't send me any for DEMO. So it's hard for me to understand if their demo program is a bit tight.

I know for sure KB tour feels good, but fly a hair higher than normal DG. It reminds me of the old precision steps! Freq higher but doesn't play or feel as the number says IMO due to soft smooth feel. KB should spin a hair higher than PX too IMO.

Anyway, I don't want this thread to go off topic. You might want to open another one out side this sticky.

I would be careful buying any club off the shelf regardless of # on the shaft. I bought Mizuno MP 57's with PX 5.5. I took them to my clubfitter and the shafts actually frequency'd out to 7.0.  they were not even close to 5.5's. I should have known that the off the shelf shafts are basically junk. I had them replaced with Tour Concepts.

I had the same issue (sort of) with the pings last fall.  I went from Titleist 735's with 6.2 PX (custom) to the i10's with 6.5 PX, and my ball flight suddenly went sky high.  I couldn't stand the heads, I seemed to go from a straight/fade ball flight to a 5 yard draw with them as well.  The 695.mb and i10/s58 combo are two totally different animals regardless of the shafts.  If you're looking for something in between the two, the AP2 sounds like a winner.

the project x shaft the same kick-point throughout the set - giving the player similar launch conditions from pw-3 iron

the project x flighted has progressive kick points throughout the set. The scoring irons (pw-8) have kick points nearer the hands, providing a lower more predictable flight for better control over the shot. the mid irons (7-5) have mid kick points helping the player launch the ball slightly higher, and the long irons (4-2) have low kick points and softer tips helping to get the ball up the in air and land softly.

The average player would probably benefit from the flighted PX for the better all around set - The player with more control over his or her swing would most likely go with the standard project x for complete control.

hope this helps,

mise

Does anyone have a chart that draws a comparison from the normal frequency CPM vs the Precision scale of 5.0, 5.5, 6.0, etc??

I am disappointed that there is so much subjective info here instead of some facts...

I just bought a set of Mizuno MP33 with Rifle Precision 6.5 shafts. I currently play Taylormade LT2 with DGS300's. After reading this thread I am worried. Are the 6.5's going to be way out of my league? My driver swing speed is around 100-105. I hit my 6 iron 175-180. What should I expect to see in differences between the two shafts and setups?

I think you've got it the other way around.  Dynamic Gold is easily the most widely used shaft on tour.

Titleist's Fittingworks.com has posted a two part article comparing the two shafts.

A lot of discussion about flex, what about the feel of DG vs. X?  I have always played the S300. I plan on getting some MP57's and considering the X 5.5.   I have hit the X 5.5 and S300 in the 57's.  The S300 felt better than the X 5.5.  What do you guys think from a feel perspective between the two shafts?

DGS300ss = 5.5FCM
DGS300 = 5.8FCM
DGS300hs = 6.1FCM

PX5.5ss = 5.8FCM
PX5.5 = 6.0FCM
PX5.5hs = 6.2FCM

PX6.0ss = 6.3FCM
PX6.0 = 6.5FCM
PX6.0hs = 6.7FCM

DGX100ssx2 = 6.2FCM
DGX100ss = 6.5FCM
DGX100 = 6.8FCM
DGX100hs = 7.1FCM

ss=soft-stepped
ssx2=soft-stepped twice
hs=hard-stepped

Assumptions: using Joe's numbers & given that stepping shafts adjusts flex by 1/3.

DGS400 will flex virtually the same as DGS300, but weigh a few grams heavier.

From: TrueTemper Sports/Fitting Works

What are the differences in performance characteristics between the Project X and Dynamic Gold shafts?

Project X will launch slightly higher (0.5°) and with slightly less spin (200 rpm) than Dynamic Gold due to its slightly softer tip section and firmer mid section. The firmer mid section of Project X will give the player a slightly stiffer feel compared to Dynamic Gold. Both shafts are designed for the better player or stronger swinger seeking shot control with their irons and a lower, penetrating ball flight. Players with quicker tempos may prefer the heavier weight of Dynamic Gold.

We have seen several Tour players switch back and forth between the two models (Davis Love III & Camilo Villegas are two that come to mind). At The Players Championship this year, there were 66 sets of Dynamic Gold in play and 23 sets of Project X.

...if a player is currently playing Dynamic Gold S300 and wanted to try Project X, we would suggest that he start with the 5.5 as it would be the closest comparison to S300 (and vice versa).

..................Project X 5.5.......... Dynamic Gold S300
Weight........... 118g........................... 130g
Torque............ 1.7°............................ 1.7°
Flex Point..... mid/high...................... high

more coming...
