I am sure this has been brought up, but I have been itching to find a perfect CB set to pair with my Miura small blades.  I am sorta aware of all that is out there, but I thought I would ask since when I buy JDM I buy used on Yahoo Auction and it is all stuff I can never see until I get it.  I am open to anything that meets the following:

-Compact head, specifically I hate longer heel to toe irons and I can't transition form BBs to larger heads well and I want to play these sets with continuity.
-Very little offset
-Square toe, or more square than not
-I think that unlike my small blades, I want this set to be really soft for a change of pace that is tangible.
-I really want to keep it sub $700 used as the BB are really a beloved set and will see most play, I don't care about new models etc. so all years are open

I made the regrettable decision to sell off a set of PRGR ID BL irons a few years ago because at the time I thought all JDM glitter was gold, and as it turns out, that set probably is what I should have kept as it hits my criteria save for the toe.  I would rather try something new, but I can always grab that set again on the cheap and be done with it.  It was the one with the curved muscle behind the ball.  I have also had the onoff Miura CB242 I think irons and while I liked them, they are just too close to blade/miura feel to be worth the change of pace set, so I don't want MIura.

I have some interest in the onoff shingo set, 358 I think? but not sure on size and offset and toe is more pointy than boxy which may be fine.  Romaro and Baldo sets look intriguing, but I have no clue as to feel or offset/head size.  Same with A grind.

Any help or suggestions is more than appreciated.  I think being a non feedback set, I want dead soft for the change of pace.

I would look at Honma TW 717 or 727, or any Yamaha Inpres X V Tourmodel from 2008-2012(?? before the RMX line)

No on the cb57.  A bit chunky and not the feel I want assuming it feels like Miura.  I want a real tangible change of pace

Like any Epon models?  Although I don't think any fit the aesthetic wants.  Crazy forgiving, I've hit them against a ton of sets on TM and the consistent ball speed numbers are insane.  Just getting down to the price range you mentioned.  I'm sure you've already hit the popular models though.

The stores are full of Epic's here. There's a full display box of shaft options. It's all about the shaft...

With all your preferred options, I am agree it's a tough job to find perfect one. The itch may not stay in one place/sense..lol. As I remember and read somewhere, I thought you ever own a Romaro? I might be mistaken then.
Anyway, I only have and hit a Romaro- old ray H. I think it covered pretty much you're looking for except boxie toe shape. Ray H Feel is dead soft for me, bordering too soft for what I like and I can sense the tangible pace as you mentioned on it. Offset are minimals and head size is smaller than my regular MB, a bit tad bigger than Mg PMB.
As other mentioned,Epon and fourteen are solid in their CB lines. Perhaps I am also aware that you are looking for something that classy yet different? Baldo and Astro looks nice but I know nothing about them.

Red=PMB- Blue=old Ray H - Wht=SGI Toe box.

Didn't think about new id blacks, I presume they feel like epon?

Never hit epon.  I just seriously hate every epon head or I would spring and go for that.  At best the CB tour and new personals are ok to me depending on offset.  That is why I am looking for basically an epon but compact and no offset.

I have a romaro wedge, alabacoa or whatever, it is really soft, so their irons are the same?

Epon is nice. Less offset that would be personal 3 or 302 if I would get an Epon.
As for Romaro, I don't use premium ball with it, way too soft for me and got no feedback. But I think it's depend on our swing too- on how we deliver the club. My impacts spot with Romaro are 1-2 grooves higher than blades. Miss hit on lower groves feel harsh comparing it with Epon or Fourteen. But more forgiving compare to my 2008 cb x-blade TS. Surely these are my millages but hopefully could give some idea for you.

How does the a grind feel?  If you can compare to maybe another Jdm club as I have hit a lot.

RomaRo really may be an option, I enthusiastically love the the feel/feedback of the BBs, and they to me are more just feedback heavy which seems firm, but I love it for a blade they are really perfect.  I want this set to be really different.  I have erred on cb sets in the past I have sold because I get them too blade like (the offset and topline steers to more blade like cbs) I think that this time around I want a pillow soft deader and more true cb so that it is a real change of pace.  The problem with cbs I have gotten is they are at a point where I would rather play the blades instead of what seems like the same thing but only 80% of the awesomeness.  Why I keep saying the phrase change of pace.

A little background, I forever rotated mp14s and Titleist dci 962s and I am really looking for a jdm version of that.  Frankly the dci 962 head forged in s20 japanese steel would be my dream cb set.

No one hit the onoff 358s?  This set is still on my short list in theory.   I am going to look into RomaRo options. Mmy RomaRo lon wedge is probably my softest club and it sounds like the irons are all that endo style as well.

302s are also on radar, ate they really all that?  If the offset is not crazy I could probably live with the toe.  If the new personals are that amazing I could wait it out and stretch for a set under $1k, but I feel like the other top endo stuff for other companies would feel the same, is that a fair guess?

302 all day for me honestly over P3, regardless of price.  I would think they are about as soft as you can get on centered shots.  The leading edge grind is sweet and I'm a picker, probably even better for someone who takes a solid divot.

I'm biased but a set of Wilson Progressives tick most of the boxes you mention.  You can get a brand new set for $300 and they are butter soft.  Square toe, excellent forgiveness.  Blades in 8/9/PW, but remember the 8 has the loft of a modern 9 iron so the clubs that count are CB.  Awesome sticks.

Not mushy soft like the Epon.  Firmer but not hard.  You've mentioned Romaro, close to the Romaro H but slightly more dense.

If you want players cb, nothing comes close to this.  Compact, thin top line, close to no offset.

I was on a affordable forged CB hunt last year.

Picked up a set of 2012 Yamaha Inpres X  V forged tours,  Fourteen TC-910's and the PRGR idbl's.

The Yamaha's and the Fourteens came in at the same time and i was able to hit them against each other numerous times. My goal was similar to yours, soft, with  low offset and in my price range. The Fourteens to me felt softer, and had a better ball flight for my swing. I ended up selling the Yamaha's, even tho i preferred the looks of the Yamie's. The longer i have the 14's the more i like em.

I got my IDBL's later in the year and they are impressive as u already know. Very low offset with great feel.

The Fourteens might be a touch more forgiving than the idbl's.

There is a 2010 Ultimate Best forged cavity back iron review online, they listed the 910's at coming in at number 5. The 910's had the highest ball speed, lowest spin, best feel, top distance, and easiest to hit long irons. Number 5????  Should have been number 1. Crazy.

Don't overlook Stenson's Legacy Black's, i snagged a set off Ebay for $450, Blade hunter can attest to there greatness.

Stenson's gone thru 4 sets already, they can't be to bad.

Best of luck in your search.

Here's my list of all the JDM sets I own and how I rate them in terms of feel/looks/forgiveness and playable

1. Epon 302 ( Legendary ) I buy a new set every year ( I own a set of the coppers that sit in my office )
1B.   Epon 316 (very similar to the 302 and Very different ) Less offset and believe it or not I think they're more forgiving than the 302
2. A Grind R1 CB ( Very Soft and the leading edge is perfect ) Zero Offset / Perfect cavity  ( I have had these only for 1 month and haven't played a full round with these )
3. Miura CB501 ( I like the looks and forgiveness)
4. Miura CB57 ( Love / Hate relationship with these )
5. Epon AF Tour CB ( almost like the 302 but not as good )
6. Miura Straight neck 202 ( Love these as they were my first JDM set )

Epon Personal 3's IMO was a total fail for epon

I have a set of PXG that I rotate with the Epon 302

I feel like at the very least I am compelled to go epon.  I got the BBs based on the same rumblings you hear so many people saying and clearly there is fire where there is smoke.

Would I be better off with the CB tours though?  Offset, head size, top line, all that stuff needs to be somewhat in check and I have heard all those complaints about the 302s.  CB tours look like a tighter version of 303 to me?  What is the 316?  I haven't heard of that but less offset is key, and forgiveness as this is the low confidence set is also welcome.

Just looked on their website, looks like 302s are the way to roll...af tour CB may be too blade like?

Sus 316, smaller run, plated and non plated finish some prefer one to the other.  What shafts do you play?  If your in the US I could send a couple with super peening oranges your way for a few days before you take the plunge, I've been loving kbs tour in a set of MP5 that somehow ended up in my garage so I'm going to rip my 302's apart soon anyways.

See if you can find a set of PRGR TR500's.  Possibly the best overall feeling irons I've ever played. Pretty much ticks
all the boxes.

I have both the 301's and 302's and they are very similar of course. I actually prefer the shape of the 301's.
If you are a low offset guy the 302's might have a little too much offset for you. They also have that slightly high toe thing going on which some JDM guys are not a fan of. Great soft feel of course.
The feel, finish and performance are first class but a dedicated blade player who is picky about look at set up may have some issues with the 302's.

Thanks for the offer beatz, I am going to roll modus for sure in them though.

Nessim, the wilson V4 is for sure my back up go to on this if I bail on JDM, really it ticks off all the boxes for me except the feel is not stupid soft, which I don't know why I even am making that such a big deal other than I know the only way i will use and enjoy a CB set is if they don't bother me to look at as I rotate them with the BBs and they feel tangibly different.  Like I said, in the past I got PCBs that were miura, or similar to blades in general and at that point I found myself wondering why am I just not playing the stupid blades?

I will check out the prgr TR500s.

What oldplayer whom I know well enough from other threads has said has been my epon fear.  I was looking at the Technica pro as the pre 301 head and maybe a cheaper trial, but I am really picky and I have to say, nothing I have seen in internet pictures makes me think anything epon is something I would like.  I would be leap of faith solely that they have a mythical softness/ease of use.

Oh yeah, if this helps, I am a heel misser.  I was at the range yesterday working on my shoulders not being so open at address, and I did have a 4/5 flushed hosel rockets as is my bigtime shank miss when I am at the range and tinkering, so not sure if that means anything.  Smaller heads don't bother me and larger ones do because I miss 8-1 inside the center, and as much as it doesn't happen when playing I bet I am MMs away a dangerous amount, but with my current irons I know that feel, and that MMs away strike is a GIR, just has a solid but not pure feedback, 1/4" toward the toe and it is flushed.   So that is why I don't like to see alot of toe, and I don't want to see alot of offset.  If anyone knows the MP14s, that is about my tolerance for offset, and when I do hit mine it takes some shots to adjust and I don't want that with the CB set.

I am probably making such a bigger deal out of this than needs to be, but save for a 3 year HO spree when I came back to golf, I don't change irons.  I mean literally these 2 sets will be my irons for the next 10 years and I am halfway there.  I really want to keep with the whack JDM stuff, but like I said, the wilson v4s area cheap and easy bail for me, I just want to try one JDM set first.

DUDE, these look GOOD.  Not sure I trust his descriptions all the time, but he did say "crisp but soft" and that bothers me a little?  Have you hit them?  Anyone?  if these are as soft as my ID BL PRGR I think I would strongly consider this.  There is a set for $375 now on auction and I just need to reshaft with modus because I don't want DGS200.
