Hey guys,

Looking for some advice on what shaft to try in my cobra utility iron.  Im on my 4th shaft after having it a month and want to try something new.  It came with a 85 hybrid rogue shaft which I replaced with a fuji fuel 95x which i didnt care for so I plugged in a px 6.5 pull from a 3i I had and like the performance of that but want something smoother feeling as px is harsh IMO.

So I guess the advice im looking for is if I should use a hybrid shaft or an iron shaft? Its a .370 so ive just used a shim on the .355 iron shafts I've used in it.  I didn't like how unstable the hybrid shafts I used in there felt and performed but liked the speed and distance, alternatively, I liked how the iron shafts I used(px6.5 and modus 120tx hardstepped) felt stable and launched low but were a little shorter than I wanted.

I dont have much experience with hybrids or driving irons and their shafts because ive never played them. So im looking for something in the 90-110 gram range, whether it be a hybrid shaft or iron shaft, that has the flat launch, dispersion, stability of a stable iron shaft but in the lighter weight range from the typical 125-130 gram iron shafts I'm used to playing.

I'm not really looking for something just smooth. Ive only played heavy, super stiff steel in irons so I'm familiar that performance. I'm looking for other options in graphite or steel composite in a lighter gram range that can give me that same stability I'm used to.

Maybe try Steelfiber i95 irons shafts. I've personally never hit them, but have heard fantastic reviews. Low launching for a graphite shaft, smooth,  and lightweight. Seem to fit what you are describing.

This is one I'll look into. Hoping someone has add experience with it and can provide some specific comparisons.

on a side note- your signature of irons and wedges are the exact same as what I'm interested in getting.  Mp25-lz 6.5 but hardstepped and rtx 3.0. I play a 50, 55, 60 as well.  Not sure if ill get them in the 50 and 55 but really want the 60* but in LG. Absolutely love the way the lg low bounce grind lays.

Addi if you want smooth . I personally have the same combo you hated. So I'm not going to be the one to help. But you are correct. The Fuji fuel 95x isn't " smooth" . But it is a beastly cannon!

You can get them in 105X and 115X I believe and they aren't all that high launching in the irons. The one I had was pretty mid and not hard to keep low with wind conditions.

Thanks for the input guys. I guess I should clarify that my idea of "smooth" is not meaning a smooth wood shaft like a ad di. I am meaning something smoother/less harsh and rough feeling as a px 6.5 in a non forged, hollow head. Truthfully everything out there IMO feels smoother than a px in an iron head so I should probably delete that.

You should look at Modus 105x.  It will weigh in at 112 grams and is ridiculously smooth.

Oban hybrid shafts might be another option for you.  Either the kiyoshi black, Kiyoshi white or devotion judging by what you described you're looking for and they have a few weight options you can play with.  Oban also has a graphite iron shaft that may be worth a quick look, but I don't have any experience with that one.

The i95 steelfiber is great I would give it a try. I wish they made something in between the 95 and 110 that would be perfect.

Anyone have any experience with Aldila NV 105x?

I just picked up a 18* DHy with that combo and I'm hoping it's nasty.

I'm also looking for a straight bullet shooting driving iron OP since I launch everything high.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe the longest iron Aerotech makes in .355 is a 3 iron.  If I want to put an i95 in a 2 iron head, should I just butt trim a 3 iron to desired length, or tip trim a 3 iron a tad and then butt trim to length?   Or get a 3 iron one flex stronger than I'm playing?  It's going into a Srixon u65 head that is .355.

Check Aerotechs site for trimming info. The longest .355 shaft is 40" with a recommended trim of 0" for a 2 iron. It all depends on the feel/flight you want from that particular head.

The KBS C-Taper Lite is a very good one and it is also the stock shaft in the Taylormade UDI, (Ultimate Driving Iron).  No doubt that shaft is a key reason for the UDI's enormous popularity.  The CTL is easily one of the best iron shafts I have ever played!.. :good: .

I just got aldila RIP tour shafts for my 2 iron and 3 iron, Titleist T-MB. haven't installed them yet have been using my 3 iron with a DG AMT S300 and love the flight and feel with that shaft but thought I might be able to gain some distance with a graphite shaft, tried an Aldila RIP alpha 105x hybrid shaft in the 2 iron and felt I gained nothing over the AMT, I'll let you know how my experiment goes, I should be able to try the RIP tour this weekend

If you want graphite, some of the more stable ones are Fujikura 904 HB, Aldila RIP 105, and the UST V2 104 with some tipping.

Well I think I found a winner. Had this 9.8 tour spec lying around and tipped it an inch and trimmed to 3i length(was in a hybrid a couple years ago). Will get it on the course tomorrow but feels and performs exactly how I was hoping for.

OP - looks like you found something but I'll throw my 2 cents in. I play DG X100 in my irons, soft stepped for reference. I hit the ball high, real high. This is the only shaft that lowers my ball flight and thus I'm comfortable with that shaft (albeit very heavy).

I added a UDI 2-iron to the bag last year - had the debate of steel or graphite. I picked up a used 2-iron (bridgestone J something...with Diamana X-flex shaft, 72x) for $20 out of the used bin at Golf Mart. I loved the graphite feel but it felt light and I couldn't control it much (hooks...and I never hook the ball).

Anyway, I went with DG X100 in the UDI, same set up as my irons. Choice has worked out well but looking to move into something graphite. This is on my mind: http://proschoicegol...tydriving-iron/

Otherwise, think about tipping a fairway wood shaft or hybrid shaft as you did - would seem that is the good approach if not going steel.

Interesting. I wasnt aware they had a driving iron shaft. Probably wouldn't be a fit for me but probably good for a kot of guys.
One range session with the speeder and still think its going to be a keeper.

I had my Oban Kiyoshi Purple 100 05 put into my 2 UDI this week and haven't hit it outside yet, but gave it a few swings in the simulator last night and man it feels phenomenal. I can only hope that the on-course results mirror the early indications.

Wow!!  Looks like you have a definite winner with the Fuji 9.8.  Very impressive numbers.
