I'm staying at the Lodge at Torrey Pines and don't have a tee time. I could try to walk on during the pre 7:30 first come, first serve time frame, but would likely need to get there sometime in the middle of the night. Is this place worth standing in line for like that, or should I just make a tee time at Aviara or Barona?

We stayed in the area last year.....Aviara is nice and quite pretty. The course is fine.

But I assume by saying Torrey Pines, you mean the South Course.
I got up at 5am -- my wife thought I was crazy as she drove me down to the pro shop. I quickly learned the 'headlight rule' as I was number 34 that morning. As number 35 drove up, I passed the rule on to him and headed to wait in line for the starter to show up. Being from out of state, I listened attentatively trying to take it all in -- the stories and lies being told by the other golfers... the individual discussions and assessment of others in line as groups looked to round out their foursome.
I fortunately was absorbed into a group with three decent local players and we were given a tee time with a wait of 'only' 30 minutes. So we really didn't have time to hit balls, just stretching, putting and chipping near the tee.

We're on the first tee of the South Course at around 645 it seems and playing from the back tees, we finished around 11. It was great and I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

As for Aviara, it was nice but Torrey Pines South was memorable.

I had to ask - what is the headlight rule? I'm assuming I should have better luck as a single - the guy in the pro shop told me to sleep in my car if I had a rental! I figure I'll just walk over at 4:30 or 5:00.

The north course is easy to get on as a single if you get really stuck.

Here is another good course in the area that I've played:

The wait can be unpredictable especially with the US Open coming and many wanting the chance to play it. While it is a great course it is not the best San Diego has to offer. I would recommend Maderas Golf Club (Johnny Miller design) or the forementioned Aviara Golf Resort. Although a good course, Steele Canyon is not in its glory right now and would not currently recommend it.

On the headlight rule:

-- the night before, I mentioned to my wife that should I wake up early (I didn't say how early), I might try to go over and play the South Course early the next morning (we had to be in San Diego for an event at 3 that afternoon). Not noticing the lights of the oncoming train, she said she'd be happy to drive me over so she could shop.

In anticipation, I'm awake around 415 and quietly get dressed. I wake my wife just before five and half asleep, she drives me over to play. Pulling into the parking lot, she finally realizes its dark outside, the time and begins to wonder about me.

Then, she also notices another car in the parking lot flashing its lights and someone walking over towards us. That golfer was coming over to tell me my number for waiting in line and that I should wait until the next car arrives to pass on the same information.

Needless to say, my wife wasn't impressed by all this at five in the morning. I got out of the car so she could go back to the room and sleep but didn't have to wait too long before another car drove up and I walked over to him.....no headlights, but at least my job was done.

Interesting stuff...headlight rule, no s***.
When I played the morning after the Buick, there were just two walk ons there, me included. Sure enough there were a couple of no shows and that was that. Probably this was a special day due to the lottery and in itself is not representative.

I don't understand the headlight thing either.
What value is there to being given a number in the parking lot ?

When I walked on at Torrey guys just showed up and placed their bags on line, then when the starter showed up guys stood next to their bags and waited for their turn to get on the starter's list.
