Oak hill east course

7,152 - 76.7/147

Tight, thick rough and fast, sloping greens. Still my favorite course I've played but I am biased being from Rochester.

Also Bellerive, but haven't played it at the tips and it has some room to spray the ball off the tee. Some really tough par 3's.

7,547 - 76.5/141

Driver: Callaway GBB Epic Sub Zero - 9 degree, draw setting, 12g weight forward, Fujikura Pro Green 62 X
3 wood: Callaway XR Pro 14 degree - Stock Project X 6.0
3 hybrid: Callaway XR Pro 20 degree - Stock Project X 6.0
4-pw: Bridgestone J15 DF - Project X PXI 6.0
50, 55, 60 wedges: Mizuno T4
Putter: Odyssey Works #1W
Ball: Bridgestone B330

White Horse in Kingston, WA, because there are few bailout areas near most of the greens. The greens are relatively small; some are narrow. The course is not that long (7000 yds), but penal near the greens. Didn't really matter whether I played the tips, blacks or blues - I got beaten down.

To give some context, I've also played Riviera CC from the professional tees, Torrey Pines South (pre-renovation - white tees), Spyglass Hill (gold tees), Wolf Creek, & Bayonet GC (blues & whites).

To Chomper: did you play Desert Forest before the recent renovation? I played there about 10 years ago & loved it; thought it was the best Scottsdale course, but not the toughest.

Kiawah Island Ocean Course, Pinehurst No. 2 pre-renovation, and Cog Hill Dubsdread right before they played the BMW Championship. All three were mean for different reasons. Kiawah was bad because of the winds and distance and necessary carry on a lot of shots. Pinehurst was crazy because of the greens. Cog was mean because of how thick the rough was as well as how small some of the greens were.

Prairie Dunes

that includes a comparison with Southern Hills, Colonial, all the Bandon courses, Butler National, Pinehurst #2, #4, #7, Troon North, Torrey Pines.  I've just never played anywhere else where 80 is a good score for a scratch player.

there's a reason our handicaps travel so well.

I don't think he was a member pre-restoration but I've been a member there for around 9 years. The course is significantly harder now but the FWs are probably slightly easier to hit.

I have also played both pre and post resto. I think post resto is easier especially off the tee. The landing areas are much better for average length hitters now. I think my best round out there pre restoration was 80 my one round post resto is 75 or 76

I should have clarified that a bit. I was only talking tips vs tips. One set up from the current tips is roughly = to the old tips. 1, 4, 5, 8, 9, 15 and 18 are all more difficult now and it isn't just the additional distance. 2, 6 and 14 are easier. The greens, as a whole, are also significantly harder.

Makes sense, played the tips on the old layout did not realize the new tips have been pushed back to 7,200

TPC Sawgrass a few weeks before the Players.
There is no room for error off the tee. The greens wouldn't hold anything more than a 6 iron for an amateur. More than two hops on the green and it would run off.

Dooks Golf Links in Glenbeigh, Co Kerry, Ireland.

Played with my dad and 2 brothers when we were traveling around Ireland last summer. The slope is only 117, but it took us 7 hours to play the round without carts, we collectively lost almost all the 24 balls we found with us. It wasn't actually a bad day, started out with a lite drizzle around the first couple of the holes and then was rain free with little wind the rest of the round. The rough was super thick and ate up every ball we hit into it, not even finding any balls on the course when looking for our balls. It even looked worse than the rough at the Open going on around the same time.
my first round in Ireland I was killing my drives but coming up short on all my approach shots. didn't figure out why until the 16 hole. The course was measured in meters!

No pun intended, but difficult question.  Butler can break your will, rich harvest is ridonkulous, and any "hard" course where the rough is up can destroy.

But, for me, the hardest was Bay Point in Panama City, FL, in the middle of a hallucinogen and booze fueled spring break in college.

The flashbacks are awful.

Seeing a reoccurring theme here. A lot of these courses are already tough, but add in pre or post Major readiness and these turn in beasts!

Torrey Pines South, two weeks after the Farmers is a pretty good test for any golfer. Lost multiple balls in the rough a few feet from the fairway. I am positive I was standing within 4 feet of them but couldn't see them. Once I found one, I would take a full 9 iron to advance the ball 50 yards. Once the Fireball shots kicked in, things went downhill.

Glencoe Forest for me. 7505 76.9/144. Distance is a little more manageable cause we are at abit of elevation but the greens were recently redone so they were firm and bouncy. I think the newest #1 AM in the world won the invitational there last year at +2 over the 3 days.

I disagree with much of the sentiment here.  So many people have mentioned tough conditions, that happen to be on tough-ish courses.  If you put 6-8 inch rough on pretty much any course in the world, it is going to play fairly tough for most people.  Identifying courses that are tough with normal (i.e. non tour event) conditions would be far more interesting...

Great topic!

The two hardest courses I have ever played is a 9 hole course in Aviano, Italy (Castello di Aviano) and the old 18 hole course in Panama City, FL designed by Bruce Devlin.  I understand that the Devlin course was redone by Nicklaus.  Lagoon legends I think it was called.  The Aviano course sits on the foot of the alps and it was about 100 degrees the day I played it and walked.  The florida course was tricked up beyond belief.  The easiest course in the world to make a triple bogey no matter what your skill level is.  Tobacco Road in North Carolina is not far behind the Devlin course.  More generous in landing areas and the greens much larger but still tricked up (I did not like Tobacco Road).

In my book, the two hardest golf courses (fair) golf courses I have played is Pinehurst #2 (pre-renovation) and Oakmont in Pittsburgh (before all the trees cut down).

I disagree with much of the sentiment here.  So many people have mentioned tough conditions, that happen to be on tough-ish courses.  If you put 6-8 inch rough on pretty much any course in the world, it is going to play fairly tough for most people.  Identifying courses that are tough with normal (i.e. non tour event) conditions would be far more interesting...

and aren't just stupid unplayable for anybody tricked up tracks like Kiawah.

Tell us how you really feel Tnord!

On a side note, if I have to make the drive to Houston in the next month, if a guy were to detour through Hutch could he finagle a round of golf with you at your course?

not sure where you're coming from, but houston is like 10hrs from Hutch. :)

but yes, I likely could host a round...PM me the details.

bethpage black from the tips

Played about a week or so after the 2009 US Open. Setup was still open conditions.

1st cut from the fairway was upper thigh high fescue.
2nd cut 2ft off fairway was over the belly button.

Multiple balls hit into the rough never reached the ground!

Yes the diagonal fairway was exceedingly tough. You needed 300+yd carry to get over the traps before the start of the fairway.
The fairway started @315. I only made it by 10yds.

Nice not-so-passive brag. Only 325 on the fly. You da man.

I expect that's 12 you're talking about (although I guess it could be 5. But neither one requires 300 yard carry. 12's about 265 to carry the bunkers from the tips (to the left probably and longer as you go right on the dogleg left).

5 is about 290 but you have plenty of room to the left that's a lot less to clear (just not as good an angle to the pin/green).

Nice poke anyway but,,,,,,,,,

Thanks T. I had a 2 wheel drive pickup I was thinking of taking to Houston (2 wheel drives sell better there) but ended up getting rid of it in Denver. So no trip for me a while. Our route goes through Wichita so I figured I could take a little detour.

I'll still be making the trip down the road and I'll shoot you a PM. Thanks again. DSS
