What's the hardest course you guys have played? You can use course rating or slope or just however you choose to define it!
For me, It is St. James Bay in Carabelle FL. CR is 72.9 and slope 142.
It's not long from the tips, right at 6800 yards, but it is a pain to navigate. A lot of target golf, with little to no room for error.
I shot an ugly 84 there and lost several balls.
Super nice course, but damn it was a challenge!

Koolau Oahu, HI

78.2/153 from tips 7310
75.4/140 from 6797 (where I played)

Course basically built on the side of a mountain in a rain forest. Course itself reminded me a bit of desert target golf, but just not in a desert, not much room to miss. What really made it difficult is how wet it is. I lost 3 balls in fairways where I knew exactly where I hit them, just sucked up by the earth and disappeared. One of the most beautiful places I have played but, pretty much a joke of a place to try and put up a serious score unless you are there in the dry season.

Erin Hills.  Mostly because it is so long.  I guess it would play better if you got a hot dry summer, but then it would make those greens near impossible with all of the run-offs.  It's a course that was built to host a US Open and I think it will do well with that.  But not a course an average player could handle every day.

EDIT: The more I think about it, an obvious choice is Thunder Hill Golf Course outside of Cleveland.  The course was built on a former fish farm, so there are dozens of little ponds that are in random spots.  The course is nearly impossible to play the first time as many of them are blind to the tee.  One of the more common stories about the place is that Sergio was so fed up with it that he walked off after 9.  I have no idea if this is true, but it is definitely the kind of course you want to stop playing after you find a few of these random puddles.

Silverrock might be one of the hardest because of length at  just under 7600 yards at sea level.  76.3 and 139(not hard slope) .

But the hardest short course I have played has too be badlands in Vegas.  73.1 149 slope at just under 6500 yards.  149 slope is crazy for 6500 yards.   probably the hardest target golf I have played.

Honorable mention Pga West Stadium 76.1 150 slope.   (when I played there the rough was a dead shot not like the pga tour lately)

Maybe chambers bay.

Dooks Golf Links in Glenbeigh, Co Kerry, Ireland.

Played with my dad and 2 brothers when we were traveling around Ireland last summer. The slope is only 117, but it took us 7 hours to play the round without carts, we collectively lost almost all the 24 balls we found with us. It wasn't actually a bad day, started out with a lite drizzle around the first couple of the holes and then was rain free with little wind the rest of the round. The rough was super thick and ate up every ball we hit into it, not even finding any balls on the course when looking for our balls. It even looked worse than the rough at the Open going on around the same time.

The Honors.

I was hitting driver - 5 wood or 3 iron on every hole. A couple of holes I didn't hit it far enough to get to the fairway. Before that round I thought I was a pretty good golfer.

Hardest course I've ever played is either Oakmont or The Ocean Course.  I see that they are both on the "Hardest Courses in America" list.  They deserve to be.  Both are on the border of being no fun because they are so difficult.

Be very glad you didn't play before the usga rated this course or after its 1st rating. Its was 15-20+ prior and 10+ strokes harder after 1st review.
It was unquestionably well in excess of 155 slope per course raters. Course difficulty wasn't reduced to 155 until after 2nd review.

This rating is conservative for a course with landing areas set between a mountain, rain forest & lava field.

Played about a week or so after the 2009 US Open. Setup was still open conditions.

1st cut from the fairway was upper thigh high fescue.
2nd cut 2ft off fairway was over the belly button.

Multiple balls hit into the rough never reached the ground!

Yes the diagonal fairway was exceedingly tough. You needed 300+yd carry to get over the traps before the start of the fairway.
The fairway started @315. I only made it by 10yds.

Medinah #3 is notorious for being tough. Was there for a few pga championships. Its amazing watching a few pros chop the course while many are chopped by the course.

Played Eagle Trace in Coral Gables, FL right after the Honda many, many years ago. Wide open & windy...bad combo with the ultra fast greens. I know exactly why the PGA Tour stopped the tournament there once, due to balls running off the greens after being stopped. Probably the fastest greens I've ever played anywhere.

Played Valhalla the week before the 1996 PGA. Outstandingly difficult from every aspect. The rough around the greens was simply unplayable. I was about a +3 at the time and was posting under par scores in college tournaments. I shot 83 and I really played well. I couldn't hit a fairway with a driver, couldnt hold a green, couldn't get a chip to stop. Was a very harsh reality check when the exempt player that invited us went for a ho hum round of a few under.

Butler National from the backs... 7300+, par 71. I believe the slope rating is 78+. The last couple years the western open was there, the course played over a stroke harder than the us open. When they grow the rough up, you better birdie the 1st hole because that was the only birdie hole out there.

West lancashire golf club, uk. This thing is a brutal monster of the back tees when the wind is blowing and the rough is up..Which is pretty much every day. It borders on unplayable. This place makes royal birkdale look easy.

Like any links course, if you play with no wind its actually pretty easy. With the wind up and your hitting driver anywere from 380 to 170 wind dependent, its stupid hard.

I have played a few difficult courses, but I think the most difficult was Rich Harvest Farms.
