I'm looking for recommendations for inexpensive sunglasses for golf. I've had the Oakley half jackets for a while but one of the lens broke and I'm thinking of trying a new pair. Thanks.

I wear the Oakley flak jackets with the prizm golf lens and I love them! Only thing is they are not a good everyday lens but golf wise you can't beat them

Hands down oakley is the best brand so any of their glasses should be quality and fairly inexpensive. As far as the model the Flak Jacket 2.0, Radar,Main link and silver are all great and offer the prize lens. The radar is more expensive but definitely worth the money IMO.  Adidas also offers a good looking set of glasses, no info about them but that all justin rose wears. cheers

In my opinion, when it comes to sunglasses you get what you pay for...

Take a look at Maui Jim's.  Best lenses out there.

Oakley is definitely solid but I don't really consider them to be "inexpensive". I've been wearing Nikes on the course for the last few years and they've been cheaper than Oakleys and look good and work well enough. Nike's max outdoor lenses are pretty good for golf and the big plus is I haven't spent more than $50 on a pair of sunglasses since my Oakleys got stolen a few years ago.

I have lurked on this site for a while but this is right up my alley (I'm an optometrist) so I figured I would chime in.

1. Costa and Maui make the best lenses flat out without a doubt - but don't have as many variations of sport frames.
2. Oakley - personally I'm not a huge fan often feel like the frame feels a little cheap and the optics aren't as good as the Costa and Maui, but they definitely aren't bad and have distinct style/brand recognition
3. Nike/Adidas - Both make solid frames with very good lenses (on par with Oakley in my opinion)

Given the choice I would go polarized - I've heard things about reading greens with polarized lenses (can't see the grain as well) - but if you haven't used them when the sun is low you are missing out.

Just a little PSA - cheap/no name sunglasses are great if you plan on losing them but their UV protection is a coating on the lens that wears out relatively quickly (think a month or so with regular wear), nicer lenses are made of materials that naturally block UV light so that doesn't happen

I have 2 pairs of flak jackets. 1 with g30 lenses and the other has the golf prizm lenses. Can't go wrong with either choice.

I just bought a pair of costas for fly fishing and they are incredible.  no comparison to anything i've owned including Oakleys.  they don't have much by way of sport frames as you said.  I got frames that block as much sun as possible so they are kind of heavy. but the lens can't be denied.

Smith optics....Every thread I see on this topic I turn one person over to the light side...Priced similar to Oakley, less than Costa, every bit as good - If not better.  plastic or glass lenses, take your pick.  I like plastic for golfing, lighter weight.   You will not regret it, you will actually be mad at yourself for not already knowing.

Is there a particular style that would be good for golf?

Smiths equivalent in lens to prizm Oakley is Smith chroma pop lense. The igniter tint is great for golf.    Even better is the transistion lens called polarchromic    Smith is a great company with lifetime warranty.  Just sent in a pair that was 9 years old that had a slight spot delamination and the temple rubber pieces were gone. It was a performance wrap style I used in cycling.  They gave me full original retail msrp as a credit for replacement.    Anyway spend some time on their site and talk withe the customer service reps.  Typically hard to find all frame styles in stores but they let you return item if they don't fit or you want a different  lense. Fabulous customer service company.

Thanks for the ideas. I need some non-golf sunglasses too, so it sounds like of light be able to combine the 2 and get a better pair

I've heard really good things about Maui Jim sunglasses.  I am tempted to get a pair, but the only lens that comes in their sport frame (Nightrider), is a polycarbonate lens.  I would imagine that the optics of a polycarbonate lens aren't as good as a glass lens?  Any one know?

Oakley flak with field prizm lenses. Enough sun protection but also great clarity on the greens. Not cheap but you get what you pay for. My last Oakleys lasted  8 years, so the value is there if you take care of them.

Take a look at Maui Jim's.  Best lenses out there.

They are but they are crummy for golf. Polarized lenses tend to "flatten" things out. Terrible for reading greens.

Gray, green, or brown lenses are also not great for golf.  I do love  them. Been wearing them 20 years and  I Have 4 pairs, they just suck for golf.

Edit..,as much as I hate the way Oakleys  look, the prism lenses are flat out the best for golf. They don't darken things too much and they give incredible contrast.

Inexpensive and good sunglasses are pretty much mutually exclusive.

Maui Jim are best followed closely by Costa and Oakley.

MJ customer service is the best in the industry, so that's worth considering.

Wait MJ  warranty is 2 years and that makes them best in the industry?   Smith warranty = Lifetime.  I get you like Mj  and Costa and Oakley.  Try a pair of Smiths and experience their their customer service.  Just got a full msrp credit for a 9 year old pair that had an issue.  No problem.  Did not need a receipt or a registration.  Awesome customer service and awesome lens.
