Playing a trip to New York State for 4 days and want to play three rounds of golf.
Bethpage Black is #1 on the list. Need some advice on two more within a
reasonable distance of New York City. Looking forward to ideas from the Wrx
Community.
I am actually hoping to out to Long Island this summer to play Bethpage, Montauk, and Lido (a CB McDonald layout. Lido is the closest to the city maybe 15-20 min SE of Bethpage, Montauk is beautiful, but at the end of the island so travel time might be a factor.
New Jersey National is a good option on this side of the city.
Ballyowen is top notch as are the rest of the Crystal Springs courses.
The best courses real close to the city are private, but would include: Bayonne, Liberty National, Baltusrol, Plainfield, Ridgewood, Canoe Brook and Suburban.
About an hour and a half drive north of the city would be Mansion Ridge, a very nice Nicklaus course in Monroe, NY, that is open to daily play.
It is a good point that there is not likely to be much around here open for at least a month or so.
If you are just jonesing for golf though, Hyatt Hills is a 9 Hole muni at exit 135 on the Parkway (the Holland Tunnel is 140 - so 5 miles south). For a muni it is very well maintained (supposedly by a former greenskeeper at Baltusrol) and they are open when no one else is.

When are you coming up? There's a few courses north of the city an hour or so that are pretty good that won't break the bank.
Being from Farmingdale, LI. I would suggest some of the courses in Suffolk Cty. Such as
Swan Lake Golf Club - 388 River Rd, Manorville, NY 11949 and Spring Lake, springlakegolfclub.com in Middle Island - not far from Riverhead. A sleeper is W. Sayville, NY on the So. Shore of Long Island . It's been a while so there maybe some new ones. These are not that far from Bethpage. Take in a Yankee game - bring lots of cash.
Our trip is not until the month of August this summer. Three brothers and it should
be quite competitive to say the least. I appreciate all the input. Keep it coming.
native new yorker here, played lido a ton, fantastic track but long round. get on the black, play the red, play the downs and i would play lido, u may like it. i've never played it but the town course of oyster bay is also good out on long island, it's a fazio. that's just for the island. there's a great course in suffern (rockland county) called spook rock, and the best of the city courses is split rock. a few million dollars into split rock and it'd be private golf course quality. there are many good holes for a nyc municipal. i would avoid long island national or mansion ridge, and tallgrass is nice, played there as frequently as lido, but lido has more history. plus, lido's last 6 holes are as good as any in the tri state area.
I hope he is playing Lido during the week. I have never finished a weekend round at Lido in under 6 hours, and I play relatively fast. Also, don't forget the bug spray! I agree that the finishing holes at Lido are amongst the best in the area. The wind plays havoc with your shots on those holes. Plan on spending at least 30 minutes on the 16th hole waiting for guys to hit 3/4 approaches into the water before giving up.

Other than name, the current Lido bears no connection to the original Lido designed by Charles Blair Macdonald which was indeed a gem. The orignal Lido declined during the Depression and was lost during WWII. The current Lido is a Robert Trent Jones. course.
