Trying to find a few good courses in this area. My Son lives and works in Boston, and I'm from the North Shore of Long Island. We're trying to find a halfway point to meet and play this season. Any Nutmeg State players on this Board? We like this area because its an easy ride from Boston and a Ferry Boat trip across the Sound from Long Island. :help:

Shennecossett isn't bad, and reasonably priced.

I hear there are lots of good courses in RI that are public and pretty good as well. I'm from the New Haven area and don't know too much of the area, but have played Shennecossett once and enjoyed it. Pretty open, not difficult, but... it's the only one I know....

Check out this link:

www.ctgolfer.com

That should give you just about everything you need. FWIW, I have never played there, but I hear great things about:

http://www.ctgolfer....nnecossett.html

and of course, there are always the casino courses:

Good luck!

Yeah Shennecosset is a nice course that's on the water and fairly priced. Also check out Elm Ridge which is in Stonington. Lake of Isles is a real nice course but can get expensive. I'd say your best bet is Shenny though...

Schenny is very nice and as you alresady know, its reasonable.
Elm Ridge is good too, 27 holes also reasonable.

2 summers ago I played Shennecossett, it was less than $40 for 2 with cart. Be sure and check their website for discount coupons.

Here are the pics I took of the Donald Ross (most of it anyway) course. Check the crown on #4, par 3, maybe the toughest green you'll ever see...super crowned...

I played Fox Hopyard in East Haddam, CT last summer and I must say it is a beautiful course that I would highly recommend. It's 15-20 miles or so North of Old Saybrook (West and north of your target area).
I'm from upstate NY so I'm not sure how far out of the way this might be for you; but I would check this course out for sure.

Elmridge is short and kind of a dog track. I'd not pay the price to play there again. Fenner Hill is off exit 2 (95) in RI and a good deal. It's a hilly par72/135slope and well worth the $$. If you go a little further up to exit 5 you'll find Exeter CC. That's a nice course. Just under 7K off the tips and a challenging course. Another one off Exit 2 in the opposite direction is Richmond CC. It's a little shorter and pretty tight. It's very reasonably priced and a beatiful course with huge pines lining the fw's. I got on Lake of Isles with a member of this forum last year and it was beautiful. It's very expensive though and very, very difficult. I had to start finding balls in the woods to keep playing. Shot about 25 strokes over my avg. I've heard good things about Shenny but have yet to play it.

That par 3 is insane (especially in the wind) and a heck of a lot of fun. For people in and around CT, Shenny is one of the best bargains around if you enjoy real GOLF and don't need luxury or stuff like fake waterfalls. To get there, you drive past through docks, the submarine plant, drug manufacturing plants, and a working class neighborhood. The clubhouse features a small, proshop and the bar is kind of dumpy, in a good way.

Basically, you get to play 15 Donald Ross holes and 3 new holes for chump change. It is an easy course to walk (from the 2nd fairway, the 3rd tee appears to be literally on the 2nd green) and I recommend walking over riding. No real water hazards. Great greens for a muni that gets a lot of play and is open year round.

For playability, I favor the Ross holes, but the new holes (the city swapped 3 Ross holes to Pzizer for land next to the sound) are gorgeous and fun. Walking out toward the ocean on 16 is a great experience on a Sunny day.

If the snow will melt in time, I will be taking the day off and playing it on Monday.

If you can manage to get on it, Stonington Country Club is very nice. It's private though, so getting on will be tough, Shennecosset isn't bad, and the price is right for it too. As said above, the 4th hole is darn near impossible from the back tees. There's a quote somewhere in the clubhouse from Bobby Jones calling it the hardest par 3 he's ever played. Lake of Isles is very nice as well, I've played there about twenty times. The price is probably too high for a round though, but if you wan't the entire golf experience then that's your place.

Once again, I would like to express my sincere thanks to all of you for the very fine recommendations. It would apear that Shennecosset would be the "Target Course". I am intrigued by that 4th hole. My youngest Son at 27 yrs old, is a scratch golfer, and I, being the "Old Goat", hover between 8 - 12, depending on how the wind blows. We, (I have 3 Sons, All Scratch), are first and foremost golfers! We are not into Waterfalls, Palatial Clubhouses, 5 Star Restaurants (In the Clubhouse), or "Hob Nobbing" with CEO's. Rather, we like good courses, everyday "Working Guys", (Thats what we are), A sandwich, chips, and a beer in the "Pub", and Knockin our brains out, trying to "Go Low". From the various descriptions you have provided, Shennecosset sounds like the place. I will however check out all the other courses. My Corp. office is in Boston, so I go up through CT, (I stay on 95) frequently for sales meetings. Plenty of opportunity to check out the courses. You get so much good info from "Real" golfers on GolfWrx! Thanks to you all once again. :clapping:

Getting it on the green is only 1/2 the battle, keeping that ball on there while putting is the rest. A VERY< VERY tough par 3!
