Last year  . Our 3 rd hole is around the 350yd and if you’ve got a good breeze behind and you connect perfectly with the ball you can get the ball within chip and putt range . I tried to absolutely muller the ball and topped the thing a cracker .  For reference . If 12 o’clock is the target, the ball went about 20 yds to 10 o’clock .  Was in a matchplay comp too . It set the tone for that round ..

I'd have to say my worst shot was in high school at our State Championship. 1st hole and 9th hole were separated by a small driving range that started about 200 yards down the first fairway.

I was a freshman playing #6, which meant I went off in the first group for my school and what seemed like a ton of people were watching. On the first tee, I swing a driver and didn't even know where the ball went. I turned around and luckily my teammates were able to point me in the right direction while trying to hide their laughter. I somehow hit it almost dead left, it hit a tree and kept going left and ended up in the 9th fairway about 100 yds left and 50yds forward of my original position. I had to hit it over the range with a 5 iron over everybody that was still warming up to get it back on the 1st hole.

Not a great way to start the round....but I did get away with a bogey on that hole.

15th Tournament Tees at Muirfield Village. Jack Nicklaus was standing on the newly built tournament tee with his wife Barbara and club Manager Nicholas La Rocca. I started harassing the guys I was playing with not to hook it and watch out for Jack.  I then stepped up to the tee and hooked a drive toward the 18th Tee at almost took Jack Nicklaus' head off. It hit the cart pillar he was standing next too. He politely picked up my ball and walked it down to me as I passed by. By the time I got to the clubhouse every one in the mixed grill was talking about it and I still hear stories about how I almost killed Jack.

Not sure this exactly qualifies for the title, but it's a good story nonetheless. A couple months ago 4 of us decided to do a home and home match, me and a buddy from our club, versus 2 guys from the club we all used to belong to. My partner and I are 3 and 6 handicaps, the other guys are scratch and 12. As the match goes on, we get completely drummed.....like 6 & 5. The 12 handicap shot 80 and carried his partner. So my partner and I proceeded to just get drunk and plan our comeback. By the time we got to 18 we were well hydrated and this sandbagger was continuing to hit shots we'd never seen from him before. So I decide on the 18th tee that I'll play a little joke on him......I stand behind him and time it perfectly to toss my ball in his backswing and try to knock his ball off the tee. Turns out my timing was even better than I thought....he made contact with both balls simultaneously and they both went about 100yds and straight. For the first 3 seconds we were all cheering at this unexpected trick shot.....then we turned and realized his driver head was dangling by a thread from the shaft. I had just snapped this guy's driver in half.......I am officially the biggest ****** on the planet. Thankfully I am the guy in the group who can build clubs and I have plenty of replacement shafts laying around the garage.....he actually hits the club better with the new shaft. Moral of the story....don't drink and play golf, it leads to poor judgment and broken clubs.

A wet, early spring day with, lots of fog in my second year of playing golf "seriously". Middle of the fairway on the first hole, par 5. I rip, or think I rip, my hybrid, feels like a solid strike, with a nice little divot. I pose on it. My buddy doesn't see it go, I don't see it go, but I'm pretty sure it's good. Coming out of my pose, I look down to see that I've topped it, and the ball has buried in the mud at my feet, about 3 inches down. Dug it out with a wedge, tried to fix the hole and then probably hooked one off the planet for my third.

Not mine but my buddy Hondo!

As a side note, Hondo is a good player 2-3 hdcp.

Rainy evening, so our men's league was cancelled but a few of us went out to play 9 anyway.  First hole we are playing is a 550 yard, par 5.  Hondo hits it in the right rough and has to punch out leaving himself about 220 yards in.

He decides to hit his hybrid.

He swings at it and just catches the top of the ball and drives it straight into the ground - but it doesn't stay there!  Instead, it goes backwards about 15 feet in the air and lands about 10 feet behind us...it takes one small hop and then the bizarre spin on the ball catches and it comes zipping forward and stops right in the hole created when he topped the ball originally.

Left us all in stitches laughing and then arguing whether that was actually an imbedded ball ruling - since the ball didn't actually stay in its own pitch mark.

Hilarious.

Landed in the road and bounced into the parking lot.  Worst part is I'm right handed so it was a pull not a slice.

I was playing in a scramble at Oak Pointe Country Club in Brighton, MI.  On the par 5 15th hole, we had about 250 to the green and it was my turn to hit.  I smoked a three wood but slightly pulled it to the left.  It ended up hitting a massive tree that was about 100 yards away from us.  The ball came flying directly back at us at probably well over 100 mph.  It was probably about 8 feet off of the ground and it almost looked like it was moving in slow motion for how fast it was going.  At the last second, I swung my three wood in the air and connect with the ball right in the middle of the club face which launched the ball back towards the hole.  Too bad it hooked out of play.  All of us couldn't control our laughter that this actually happened.

My worst (that I can remember right now) and most embarrassing shot had to be from the front bunker on number eight on Olympic's Lake course before its lengthening and renovation, when it was still a short-ish hole.  I hit a fat eight iron? into the front bunker with the pin on the back/upper tier of the long green.  I had about 20 yards or so to the pin with a fried-egg lie.  I took a big swing with a sand wedge and I bladed that thing so badly that it was still rising when it slammed off the window of the main dining room (about 70 yards away if you add the elevation), which was full that day with an event of some sort.  Of course, the entire room had to come to the window to see what had just happened and to watch me play my next shot, which was much tougher than the previous one.  I was just pretty grateful that the window didn't break....I never would have lived that down.

Here is the approximate location of the old bunker in front of the green and said Dining Room window that, mercifully, didn't break.

How about an entire round? I’m golfing with my girlfriend’s (now wife) Dad for the first time. I really wanted to impress the guy, as we all do. At that time I was playing some really good consistent golf in the low to mid 70s. The day we tee’d it up, I basically forgot how to walk. I’m the kind of person who tries to post all my scores no matter the circumstance. I shot a 97! 27 strokes worse than the day before. One particular moment that stands out, I had just birdied the first par 5, next hole is a long par 3, pull out my 5 iron and proceed to hosel rocket it almost hitting my future father-in-law. Worst day ever spent on a course but I can laugh about it now.

I've posted this before - popped up a drive on the first tee and landed it square in the center of the (PACKED!) practice green.

I was playing with a guy that had a great one. Visualize playing a dogleg right par 4, just coming off a par 3 that has a lake to the front and right of the green. He proceeds to rocket a drive into the tee marker, back to the left...over the cart path, over the street, over the next cart path, over the fairway walk up area and into the lake on the par 3 we just finished playing.

Nothing was OB yet, so he made the long trek over to the drop area hitting 3 wood to continue play (mind you over the fairway, cart path, street, cart path, etc...). I had never even contemplated it was possible!

I managed to put a ball from 80m out through the (circled) open door at a velocity that would have really hurt someone. Fortunately, it was empty late in the day. I thought it would bounce off a window, but instead, the door was open and my stomach dropped. Very anxious moment.

I barely made my tee time due to terrible traffic.  While on the first tee with 3 groups on deck watching, I teed up slightly behind the left ball shaped tee marker.  Of course, without any stretching or warmup, I thinned the drive and it hit the ball tee marker squarely.  The ball went backwards and almost nailed one of the ppl watching...the ball tee marker came off the ground and hit my playing partner's stand bag.  Oops...

I've hit a lot of bad shots, the one that sticks out as weird - I was playing by myself at twilight in small town New Mexico.  Got to short par 4 and was going to hit 5 wood off the tee.  About 30 yards forward and right of the tee box was a "creepy" house.  Nice neighborhood with beautiful houses, except this one house that had aluminum foil blocking all the windows and was never maintained at all so rain gutters hanging, that kind of thing.  I hit a two foot off the ground line drive straight into a window of that house; broke the outer of the double pane window.  I screwed up my courage and walked to the front door and rang the bell.  A guy comes to the door and asks what I want.  I tell him that I broke one of his windows.  He looks at me and says "I don't think so".   This startles me a little bit as I had just retrieved my golf ball among the broken glass that I had witnessed myself breaking.  I told him that I was pretty sure that I did.  He asked me which window and I told him which part of the house, he tells me to hold on he will go look.  In about two minutes he was back and told me that I must have missed.  So I told him if he came outside around back I would show him, he said "no, its all good." --- I got out of having to pay to replace a window, all I could figure is that he thought I was some kind of law trying a gambit to take a look at what he had going on behind that foil.

That's a squatter.

My buddy Jim pulled off a classic.  First tee at Shennecossett, a wonderful old Donald Ross muni in Connecticut.  The tee sits right next to the practice green.  First hole goes over a road close to the tee (second hole goes over a railroad track).  The guys who aren't hitting check to make sure there no cars before the guy on the tee hits.  Jim gets up with his driver.  We give him the go sign.  The ball is a worm-burner.  Goes straight for about 30 yards, hits the granite curbing on the far side of the road, bounces back and goes right through the practice green, clearing it as we laugh and yell at the same time.  We give Jim grief whenever we start off at Shenny.

And Jim is also the only guy I've played with who has had a hole in one--that one managed to hit the cart path first.

My friend pulled his tee shot left. It hit a tree about 40 yds in front on the left.  The ball bounced back about 100 yds behind our tee box.  After we got done laughing at him, I tee'd off, and hit the same tree.  But my ball didn't bounce back, it just dropped straight down.  I don't laugh anymore when someone hits a bad shot...

Back when I was starting, was a par 3 205. Needed to give some juice to my iron, but I early extended to do so. Hit the top of the ball so hard it went into the ground and bounced backwards two feet.

This last Sunday, par 3, 17th 190 yards into hard wind. Green up the hill.
Proceed to tee up with my 4 hybrid. Hit it probably around 70 yards left into the deep woods, ball completely lost.

Buddies laugh and requested that I shoot again since they were making a lot of noise during my back swing, which I didn’t mind really, but accepted their kind offer and proceeded to hit again.

You know what is going to happen…..  Daft it, now right into the deep woods as well, even worse than the first one.
Lost 2 balls by now and proceed to the drop area about 100 yds from the green up hill, hitting 3.
Thin bullet past the green, everyone laughing hard. Chipping 4, 2 putted, 6.

Tragic

So many choices.  Here’re 2.

1) I was hitting driver off a slighly elevated tee going out with a fairway parallel on the left coming in with no protection either way.  Straight air. The foursome in the other fairway was about to hit their approach shots  when I corkscrewed my driver and sent a laser right at them.  I was yelling fore as they were hitting the deck like colorfully dressed bowling pins.  I reteed under withering glares ... and did the exact same thing.  One of the older gents was really pissed and hollered at me to watch what I was doing.  Wtf?  So I yelled back “If I knew what I was doing I’d be on the Tour!”

2) Long drive hole at a company outing.  I figured I have it in the bag competing against a bunch of software engineers.  One guy has it out about 240 so no problem for a big hitter like me (yes, that was definitely sarcasm ;).  I overswing and come over the top so hard my pull to left field is going smack into this lame pond about 3’ deep and 75 yds in diameter.  Out in the middle is a small rusted sign that looks like the radioactive symbol.  My ball skips 2-3 times, p’TANGS right in the center of the sign and goes sailing back into the fairway netting me a long drive attempt of ~75 yards.  But I didn’t lose the ball!

Standing on a slightly elevated tee box of a par 5, a couple dozen Canadian geese about thirty yards ahead, right in front of the tee box. Hit driver, and the ball never gets more than a foot off the ground. It hits a goose smack in the middle of his neck, and snaps it in half.  He's not dead, he's running around with his head dragging along the ground between his legs.  The other geese are running around honking and hissing.  I am mortified. Then I realize that my three brothers-in-law are literally on the ground convulsing in laughter.  This went on for some time.  I finally go to the injured animal and attempt to -- well, I'm not sure what -- and the others come after me hissing and biting.  And the brothers are back on the ground in stitches.  This was more than twenty years ago and I still hear about it.

Good god, that's just awful.  Did anyone try to put it out of it's misery?  I'm not sure what's laugh-worthy about this...

Three days ago I hit the ground 6 inches behind the ball... with my driver.

That was embarrassing.
