The new custom site for the Ping PLD1 putters just went live a few hours ago.

https://puttinglab.ping.com/

Pretty pricey, but the head looks great.  Basically, the same proto offering that they made last year for Bubba, which he kept referring to as a "dot system" after he won the 2015 Hero Challenge.

Question:

Does this face have grooves on it??  From the pictures, it is hard to tell if it includes TR Grooves, plain (rife style) grooves or just milling marks like old milled Anser model.  Any info????

You'd think for 600, a few more options would be given. Can we at least have some neck selection, not everyone wants a plumbers. Super expensive deal for stampings and alignment aid. Poor showing from ping.

Unfortunately I agree.  LaMont @ Mannkrafted basically did whatever I wanted and charged me $650.  Sorry.  As much as I like PING, this should have a few more options than this.

Ping would have killed this if they would have made flow neck or plumbers neck an option instead of just plumbers neck. That's all you have to do. How hard is that?

Don't forget about heel/toe weights. I've always wanted to send my Anser in to have tungsten weights added.

The only customization that matters to me is a 79 degree (or as Ping would call is "11 degree") lie angle.

Not that I'd pay $600 for a Anser putter just to get my preferred lie angle. But if I wanted to, it's not available. Only goes to 74 like their regular putters.

Even the boutique high-$$$ custom guys have always hemmed and hawed about making one max-upright like that. Not sure what the big deal is about bending a plumbers neck, the local Golfsmith repair department (may they R.I.P.) used to crank them upright for me for like five bucks a pop. So my two "gamer" putters are both used Odyssey Protypes that I had the Golfsmith guy spend five minutes bending. That's a custom as I need.

Love Ping and this is a good offering in and of itself, but there is simply way more available out there at similar price points.

North Butte-

There was a period where bending any cast club wasn't recommended due to the possibility of breakage.

The last thing anyone ever wanted to do was bend a cast club.  Ben Hogan Producer Irons anyone?

PING bent both putters I brought in Mar 2011, during their busy season.

$600.... A year after Bubba...

I will give Ping credit for stepping into an arena that many manufactures have understandably shied away from up until recent years. The fact that they now have a custom Putter Lab option is a move in the right direction IMHO. I think it's a good idea that they have decided to take it slow and walk rather than run before they get some market response. Paint-fill and stampings are a good start that will satisfy a good number of the Ping Putter enthusiast, putter model, neck and weight options wont be hard to bring into the program once it's determined if this is a viable (profitable) offering for Ping. One Ping Putter that immediately came to mind for me was a (ZB)-D66 Redwood that Deerslayer had posted in Stratton's Red,White & Ping Bag profile. It may be a pipe dream but ya never know.

From what I am hearing and reading on other posts, the face does NOT include grooves.  Instead those lines that you see in the picture are simply milling lines.

Wouldn't that make the putter have inferior technology to the other Ping putters that include TR groove tech?

If Ping has proven that TR grooves put a superior roll on the ball versus a milled face, why would Ping choose to omit the groove technology on the most expensive putter in the lineup?

I don't understand this strategy at all.

Not buying into it. Period. Not for $600. I can send an OTR Scotty off to have the same thing done for cheaper at the Custom Shop. Or have a completely custom putter from other great makers.

the site is good, easy to navigate

That said, I want a black head and a black shaft and tungsten weights in the toe and heel ... WITH A FLOW NECK .. ~ 370g head please.  THINK ZING 2 if you are reading PING

Plus give me better grip colour options

You should also be able to change the paint on the plumb neck

Then I am on board

Do these have the new TR grooves? No neck options? Only Anser 2 head? Just order a Vault and get the options you want custom ordered. Probably a lot cheaper.

With that said, you can't please everyone and this is great step in the right direction. What can you custom order on a regular Ping putter right now?

There are a LOT of custom boutique options out there at that price.

Like others have said to expensive for the options available. Plus IMO the head shape is a little uninspired. Sadly, many others are making a better Anser than Ping.

For the money the Vault Anser 2 is a really nice option.

How hard is it to make a milled dalehead anser in the 350g range? Apparently quite hard???

Basically only an expensive cosmetic customization.  In the past you could get a milled 303 putter with all the same custom colors plus tungsten weights, custom shafts, grips, and things like sound slots for right around the same price.  Pretty mundane....

And no sound slot option - boooo!

Love the concept just wish the price was better, or for $600 there were more options offered (neck, head shape, sound slot, weight).

I think it's cool.  There's just no possible way I could ever justify the cost.  But I would love to have one.

It's not as extreme as the 50th anniversary anser, but it still fits more of a collector's item than a practical use product.  Like the Bettinardi limited releases.

The majority of people who buy these probably just have them all framed in lighted display cases in their extensive private collection.

They refuse to do so.  Have to keep with the grooves face etc.  offer a best grip ping logo grip.  Make it 350g and flymill the face.  Offer a sound slot and choices of necks and sight aides.  Boom. Easy as pie.

I'm a Ping ho, but this is kinda ridiculous.  You could get a Vault Anser (or choose from several other models) through their WRX custom dept with any additional sight line/dot, coloring, engraving, etc that is offered on this new putter for roughly $150 less if you chose to go custom on every one of those options...  Perhaps Ping is marketing this towards the folks that are not aware that such services are already available??

It seems like Ping kind of has their head in the sand with regards to their putter lines.  We Ping homers don't ask for much, but we have been begging for a 350g milled dale head for how long?  They just keep rolling out these special lines, expanding their mallet lineup, and completely ignoring what is right in front of them.  Sigh.

The head shape on this one is just funky.  Can't put my finger on it, but it just doesn't look natural.  Sticking a $600 tag to it just leaves me scratching my head.  Plus, no sound slot.  So weird.
