Ok Gals & Gents, you wanted it??

You got it........

A Tour Pro who Played in the Show for the better part of a decade(1990-1998), Planted it 151 times in a PGA event, making 78 cuts, with his best finish being a 3rd though probably his most amazing week was at Bay Hill in 1996, where he sat atop the Leader Board after 54 holes, to finish T11 and have his best friend on Tour, Paul Goydos, take the trophy. He also finished 78th on the Money List that year with just over $250k in winnings.

Feel free to ask him anything, be it about the physical/mechanical part of the game(He's currently a Teaching Pro), the mental part or any questions about Tour life on or off the course, inside or outside the ropes.

You Guys know my threads by now~

This is Rangersgoalie's and YOUR thread.

Take it where ya want to go and talk about whatever you want to talk about.

I'm going to lead with his post from his experience of sitting atop the 54 hole leaderboard at Bay Hill in 1996. He wears his heart on his sleeve as he tells you his thoughts, feelings and emotions, and the heartbreak of not getting it done but of seeing the good in one of his finest weeks on Tour.

It is THE finest post that I have read in my four years here.

Also, for any of you that Have chased the dream, gotten close and maybe lived it for a bit, please jump in and tell of your thoughts, feelings and experiences.

For those of you currently chasing the dream?

This Man Lived it-

Ask him your questions

He will not sugar coat it or give vague generic cookie-cutter answers-

Sam always said that the problem with most Teaching Pros is that they had never been "under the gun" so they had no earthly idea how the swing changes under pressure-

This is one of the rare Teaching Pros who has swung "under the gun" on the biggest stage on earth.

He will answer your questions

Oh, and Tyorke, thanks again for the thoughts and wishes!!

Along with being a Player, you are a Class Act and a Gentleman and You and any individual who posts in one of my threads will never ever have to apologize-

Ever!!

You wanna talk about your health, my health, Ranger's or any member's, just post it Bro!!

There are a few things more important than this game and just like in the real world, we may get off the tracks, but we always get back on, get squared away and move forward.

And Tyorke, you came closer to Playing in front of 15,000 people than 99.995% of us ever will and I know that you will get the opportunity to do it again however feel free to speak of your thoughts, emotions and feelings and the story of your journey as you lived every one of these Am's dream. And yea Bro, hitting balls on the line in front of the Grand Stands at the US Senior Open is livin the dream.

You're next dream is just gonna be a little bigger dream :)

My only request is civility and we've never had a problem here.

I owe you Guys a big Thank You for that :)

So, here is Ranger's OP~

Bay Hill, 1996.....

Well, I woke up at 730a and only had to kill 4+ hours before I went to the course.  I'd never led before, and I went early for interviews that were requested for Sunday.  The morning moved agonizingly slow, and I have always had anxiety issues, so I was pinging off the walls.  Couldn't eat lunch...ordered it, but just stared at it.  That Sunday was honestly too much for me at that time.  1) I hadn't led on our tour. 2) it was my birthday. 3) this was a hugely important week for me to simply qualify for.  Bay Hill is an invitational, and it was the last tournament my dad saw me play before he unexpectedly passed away.  I qualified for Bay Hill in the last event (Doral) by finishing 8th, and that alone was very emotional, as I really wanted to get in again because of my dad.  To be leading on Sunday was a lot for a guy who has panic attacks4) my older brother, who is a man that takes older brother responsibilities to heart, flew down from NJ that day5) after my interviews, my warm up time was shorter than normal, but I had a pretty good warm up.  I was honestly very confident in my game at that time, and love Bay Hill6) got to the first tee and the entire gallery sang happy birthday to me (still gives me goosebumps to say that)7) promptly went out on a full adrenaline surge, knocked it over 3 of the first 4 greens and was 4 over through five holes!!I ended up t-11th I think, and my best friend on tour, Goydos, won.  The next day, I went to Bay Hill to visit Arnold Palmer to thank him for the week, and ask him to sign a picture of my dad and him taken in the pro shop where my dad started working as a club pro.  My older brother had brought it with him.It was emotional for me, I had a tough Sunday, was a huge Palmer fan, and I was missing my dad.  He signed it, and put one of those huge paws on my shoulder and asked if I was ok.  I wasn't, but it was a moment I'll never forget, and a reaction from a man who actually cared, which is why so many loved him.It was disappointing, frustrating, a missed opportunity, and one of the best weeks in my PGA Tour career......

Oh yea, this Tour Pro has a name...

Patrick Burke

Merry Christmas BroMeisters 🎄

My Best,
Richard

Wow!! What a great experience. It's experiences like these that will be cherished and past down from family members to family members. It's what made this man so loved. I'm sorry the week didn't end as you would have liked ranger but what a terrific way to top off an emotional day. Congrats to you and your family for making everlasting memories and thank you for sharing!
Awesome story and memory!

I often wonder as the Tv people are telling us the story of the winner how many other stories there are to tell that week.  I think each week they should make an attempt to cover a "next level" story like this one to give the public a better overall view of the tour and the people on it.

Thanks.

Nice Xmas Eve surprise here, thanks!

Random thoughts:

My Golden Flanagan was born on March 17, so was my father-in-law. Love my dog!

Were you paired with Tiger at BC Open in '96? Curious about your impressions and whether the regular tour players could see or sense any part of what was to come?

You got a little play in Feinstein's Q School book - meet him and how did that go? Or was he just reporting? Thoughts on new system vs. old qualifying system?

Shoulder situation?

Where teaching and your favorite kind of student mentality?

It must be a great feeling to be able to live your dream. Even if it didn't turn out the way you wanted or maybe last as.lkng as you wanted. You did it. So many don't.

How much time did corporate obligations take up?

Merry X Mas. Thanks for posting Richard. Cool story.

Hope things are well.

Feinstein likes me because I will answer any question, even to my own detriment, and I was friendly with Paul Goydos.

Due to the rain forecast, I wasn't paired with Tiger at BC.  Was hoping to be.  It was pretty obvious something different was happening when he came out.  To me, he was always friendly, signed and donated some stuff for a SIDS charity I was helping, and honestly looked happiest in the range and inside the ropes.  It was pure insanity outside the ropes for him.  I saw him get in some spots where he was mobbed, and it just looked scary.  People were crazed.
When he won Vegas and followed it up so quickly, we knew there was something different going on, you just didn't see the hype get passed like that.
My shoulder is wrecked, from a golf cart accident believe it or not.  The automatic brakes locked up on my cart when I was playing a few late holes, and I got plowed in to by a playing partner.  I was holding the wheel in right hand, and the impact threw me back and I tore my rotator cuff, and possibly another tendon.  Surgery is likely in January.
I am teaching in Southern California.  I honestly enjoy working with anyone who wants to really improve.  I helped run a junior golf/education program for 7 years, and believe my strength is helping junior golfers that hope to play and compete.
I've been involved at my club since moving here in 1996, and love it.  Members are great, and it is an extension of home for me.

Philosophically, I really try to learn who my student is, and how they learn.  I am pretty fundamentals based, and believe that balance is a huge key.  Everybody is built differently, so learning how each student moves best is one of my main focuses.

Corporate obligations....
I had some great experiences, and one very sobering one.

My experience was mostly positive.  I grew up caddying and working in my parents golf shops, so playing pro ams
And corporate days were pretty much a normal work experience growing up.
The equipment companies treated us ridiculously well, and to this day, I am amazed at the amount of help
Those people will give me when I am looking for equipment answers.

Pro Ams were fun, and I played well in Vegas, Disney, the Hope.  I was just comfortable in that environment.

Corporate deals were just great opportunities to a guy like me who didn't have much.  There was so much to learn and honestly
Take advantage of due to being able to play a bit

Mr. Burke glad to see you on here! Here's a couple of my questions.

1. Are Tour players that much better and that much longer now than back in even the 90's?

2. What was you favorite course you ever played an event at?

3. Who was the best Tour Pro to play with? Fun or impressive, just in general.

Thanks, have a Merry Christmas

Hi,

Bit of a random question for me given the talk off lofts on irons at the moment in the equipment thread.

Have you ever used what are called GI clubs during an event and if so how did you find them? Is the distance they travel an issue or can you adjust accordingly?

HaHa, I don't recall Patrick ever joining the boys(or Saff and I occasionally) however since I knew him, probably the biggest name Player that Richard beat in the swats was Jay Sigel and though Jay was older than when he beat Richard 6&5, he could still Play. Merry Christmas Can :) Maddie

Great thread. Thank you guys for doing this. I would like to know how Tiger Woods influenced or changed the atmosphere on the range for the pros. I have read that Tiger made the pros practice harder but find that a little hard to believe. Pros were wanting to win way before Tiger came along. Did you personally see a difference? I am betting it's the amount of money that increased after Tiger that motivated. Lol

Good Morning Ladies & Gents and a Blessed Christmas to you all :)

Hey, Bro, Merry Friggin Christmas :)

You mentioned one "sobering" corporate experience.

Keeping the approriate anonymity, can you speak to it?

Thanks for making a Christmas in the hospital tolerable :)

Maxxie is in CCU and I went and showed him this thread and he smiled and said "sometimes you're ok and not an idiot,". HaHa, he's more fickle than Madison.

Have a great day All :)

Always,
Richard

~ Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely pretty and with a well preserved body but to skid in broad side, thoroughly used up and totally worn and out loudly proclaiming "WOW, what a fackin ride!!!"

Thank you so much, rangersgoalie, for your help with the Get A Grip foundation years ago at Cresta Verde and Hidden Valley.

I want to ask you some questions that many of us here at Wrx would like to finally,as they say, bury the hatchet on, and get the real, straight from the tour perspective, so that these questions will never pop up on Wrx again:

1. What is your take on Am's that show up with a staff bag?

2. How do you feel when you see a 10+ handi with blades in their bag? Do you even look in someone else's bag? Do you even care?

3.  Did you get in on the Costco ball, Kirkland Signature craze?

Thank you for the thread. If that crusty old RP is involved it can't be all that bad :-)

Snowbird here in Palm Desert for the winter.

Where are you teaching out of?

Merry Christmas all!
