First post here, new member! I was just golfing over the weekend and the guys I was playing with were surprised at my club choice on my approach shots. I was using a 7 iron for 150, but am gradually moving to my 8 iron as my ball striking gets more consistent. I'm hitting the back of the green too often and having to lag putt crazy far. I'm not a great lag putter.

Anyway I feel like that is probably a pretty normal club choice @150 out for someone like me (around 30 5'10" and fairly athletic, but not the best golfer so not trying to murder the ball). But these guys kept saying my swing looks slow and easy and I'm not sure if that's because I have a pretty slow backswing or if my clubhead speed is really slow for my demographic?

Last relevant piece of info is that I shoot in the high 80s on a good day, am a terrible putter so I three putt pretty often, and am currently playing Adams Golf Tight Lies (cavity back game improvement irons) hand me downs from a buddy who gave them to me when I picked up golfing for the first time a couple years back. I'll get some better clubs when I get a more consistent ball strike. Looking forward to that day.

Thanks!

If you are going to do this, be sure to post the model of club and/or loft, too.  There are too many differences between brands and models.

Fair point, problem is all I know is they are Adams Golf Tight Lies irons. I didn't buy them and they are probably five or six years old at least. Sorry I don't have more info.

Generally an 8 iron or a 7, assuming no wind, not uphill or downhill and typical UK conditions. No point in listing club model as you won't find the specs. Enough to say the 8 iron has 44 degrees of loft and the 7 iron has 40 degrees of loft.
Driver: SMT DB455 12 degree w Aldila Protopype 80X @ 47" (loft is more like 10.5 on this. Has some extra weight in the butt. Repainted - hate the red)
2/3 Wood or Thriver: KZG Gemini 355 14 degree w Aldila Protopype 80X @  43.5" (heavily tipped and lead taped on shaft and head).
4 Wood: Wishon 949MC 16.5 w Fuji Rombax 80B X
Irons: Sounder SBIV 3-PW w Nippon Super Peening Blue X (these descend in 4 degree increments from a 52 degree PW)
Sand Wedge: Sounder SBIV SW w S400
Lob Wedge: Sounder SBIV SW w S400 bent to 60 degrees (heavy heel and trailing edge grind and lead taped to bring up weight)
Putter: Tech-Line Scuff Rail (with the scuff rail removed from the sole)

Substitutions depending on course and mood and time of year:
PRGR Egg I3 Utility w Veylix Rome 988 X (like a driving iron on steroids)
Nakashima H-Tec 17 degree Hybrid w custom shaft (a cut down old Honma persimmon wood shaft, X flex and heavy - makes a perfect hybrid shaft)
Maxfli Revolution Back 2 iron w Diamana Thump X
In the wet, cold, muddy months, I will swap out the forged irons and wedges for some Wishon designed Lynx Parallax Tour irons w Steelfiber i110X and some Solus wedges w S400.

This is dependent upon too many factors.  Ball speed, Traj, Dynamic loft.  The only important thing is know how far each iron goes with solid contact.

I'm odd yardages with my irons. 9 goes 145, 8 goes 155 +/- a couple yards. It depends on how much room I have in front and back of pin.

edit to add: the loft of my 8 iron is probably more like a 7 iron from years ago!

I typically use my 39 degree 8 iron from this distance. It really depends on course conditions and factors. If I'm trying to get to a flag that's 150 away. I'm usually looking to be just short of it. I use titleist DCI 981 currently. 155-165 would be my 35 degree 7 iron.

my ball striking changes from day to day. so if we're talking carry distances typically - 6-8. I've hit my pw with a terrible shot that never really got up in the air 150yds with roll...on the flip side, I've hit my driver 150yds by topping it. lol!

One important fact everyone is leaving out is altitude changes. He is in Boise Idaho according to his info.

With me it is a 6 iron at sea level of course I am 60 years old hitting a 1980 Macgregor blade iron.

In the case of the OP IMHO not too bad considering how long he has been playing

Very similar to the OP, 5'10", 31 years old, athletic build (or use to be).  I played baseball growing up and have finally grew into a golf swing.  At 150 yards, I'm between a PW and 9 iron. That is using Mizuno MP-53 irons.
