On my second set of 690.mb's. Played my first for seven years- close friend gave me his set he had in his basement that had been used for roughly a dozen rounds. So.. Set number two!

Actually have a set of 681's at my father's home in Scottsdale that I haven't used in years after having them in the bag for two seasons. Should probably figure out what to do with those! :-)

I'm very disappointed that this thread is nearing three pages and there hasn't been a single photo of a nicely worn set of 10+-year-old irons.

Here's what I just built. Faces were refinished by Continental. Paint-fill to follow this afternoon.  They have 'friends' waiting.

This Tad is friggin unbelievable. She's a loner at the moment but will hopefully join others someday.

All I've got on the phone right now.

You are correct.  Vintage club porn is exciting.

Wow, that Tad Moore blade is amazing.

Titleist 990's, I try quite a few irons and keep coming back to this model .

I'm also currently gaming my Titleist 990's. They are an excellent players club, probably one of the best cast club heads out there.

Actually, the newest clubs in my bag are my wedges, and that's only because the USGA decided to render my previous models obsolete.

With the groove rule from 2010 another interesting factor in this is whether or not those with older sticks rotate something else into the bag for tourney play or does their league overlook that requirement.

My irons are all good. You just need to check the USGA website. Many pre-2010 clubs are conforming already so not a big deal. I only had to change my wedges.

Did not know that. Thanks!

Mine, from 2008, were no good. Gave me a good "excuse" to tell the wife I "needed" new irons. : )

Funny, I honestly got the impression that many irons were out of date. Honestly - thanks for sharing the info!

Someone asked about pics?

And the latest addition.  MacGregor FC4000 MT2 circa 1963, black with silver piping leather grips.  Currently undergoing a bit of a refurbishment.  Buff, polish and some fresh lip gloss.  Not played yet, but will take them out at some point for a vintage round. Just because.

As for the "groove rule"?  Meaningless contrivance for this golfer.  Never once have had anyone ask me if my clubs were conforming or not.  If someone did, probably would tell them where to place this 7 iron.  But I don't roll in USGA circles.  As a member of the O.G.A., we find the whole groove thing quite meaningless.

Play what you want, enjoy what you play.

PD - The TM is positively sick.  That may become a grail search for the remainder.  A worthy pursuit.

TYVM Medic.  The grips are the original MacGregor leathers in great shape.  Cleaned up quite nicely and will get a Lexol treatment.   The set was 2i - 9i, no such thing as a PW per se back in this era.  Had a Mac T. A. FC4000 D.S. iron (11iron) around that was added to round out the set.  BTW, these were found just last weekend for a tidy sum of $8.00.  Classic Ho gonna Ho.

My O-Size/Blade combo has remained faithful & reliable thru the years, even when pulled from the bag many times in favor of the "latest & greatest." They always get the job done w/o complaints when called back to duty.

I've succumb to the trappings of that Apex CF 16 BEST IRONS EVER thread, so the i3's will once again assume their space in the closet, patiently awaiting their return.

Put a set of Callaway x18's with stock uniflex shafts.  Haven't gamed "shovels" in a very long time (more ego than anything), and I'm having fun hitting irons again.  Decent distance but way more forgiving than what I had been using (various player's cavity type irons)
Bag: currently under construction

Every non conforming iron and wedge is grandfathered in until 1/1/2024. Only pros and high level Am's are subject to the groove rule.

I play them all...occasionally.  Listed from my favorite down...

1990 Mac VIPS
PING Eye 2
Hogan Apex 88 Redlines
Titleist 755
Hogan Apex 99
Cleveland TA7

I bought all of these used based on GolfWRX threads.  The were all about $100 a set.  So, for the cost of a new set of whatevers, I bought all these.

Current gamers, Bridgestone J40DPC.  But I could play any of the older ones and not lose a thing.

'99 Apex are built and in the bag for tomorrow.

I'm especially fond of my Wishon's but my recent foray into the 'classics' has been enjoyable and enlightening.

Jim,

I couldn't tell you what's conforming/non-conforming.  I've never entered a tournament and don't plan to,  I've never participating in a big money match and play most rounds as a single.  It's all an encuse to build and carry different clubs.  I've averaged $125 a set and that's money well spent in my books.

I think G5s fit the bill. Fairly low cap golfer (2.something right now) and love them; not a crazy big G series.  Thinking about a refinish this winter. Usually have a set of Eye 2s lurking as well, but am without a set at the moment (hit me up if you have some at +1", and white/silver with DG 😎).

Those '99 Apex are gorgeous, like jewellery. I even got fit for a set when they came out but in the end bought another set of Mizuno.

Mizuno mx 20's & mx 23's    , I do have some newer sets - apex pros' & new 850 forged [still in box!]
But I'm hanging onto the 23's for now [ been a few years already]
