Lee Westwood - What sportsmanship. Extremely Impressed. (shouldn't be) a small footnote

This shouldn't be overlooked by the fans of golf especially the younger generation but it most likely will because of DJs incredible display of ball striking and the joke of an organization, aka the USGA, but wow Lee Westwood really impressed me.

All day his sportsman ship was put on display when he was yet again failing to get it done on Sunday when he is in contention. It started right on 5 when DJ called the rules official over, you can blatantly hear Lee state that he did nothing to cause the ball to move. You also saw him throughout the day giving DJ props on his amazing shots. Again when DJ finished, DJ was clearly in another world and forgot to shake Lees hand, Lee casually waited until DJ could embrace his son and then proceeded to congratulate him. Plus his caddy bowed down to him probably because he was able to witness amazing ball striking all day.

Not that it matters, but Lee just shot up in my favorite golfers list. I will surely be pulling for him in all the majors so he too can get the monkey off his back.

Good on you Lee!!!!

I'm sure it was a big relief to Johnson to be playing with someone who wasn't or isn't an uptight whiner when things aren't going his way.

Good post Westwood seemed a very calming influence for Johnson as well.

Amen!

I thought the same of Lee throughout the round yesterday.  Especially on 12 when the USGA officials told DJ of the impending review.  Lee seemed to give him some words of encouragement and a pat on the back to help calm DJ and ease his mind.

Class act.

I was impressed as well. After DJ bombed his drive down the middle of 18, Lee caught up to him to pat him on the back. I agree, he shot up my list as well. What a good dude.

Also, Lee's caddy was pretty understanding too.  Can see him encouraging him after the 3 minute mark of the link.

I was going to start a similar thread. I was really impressed with Lee. I have always pulled for him, but now I'm a fan.

After he was obviously out of the tournament, you could clearly see him "get out of the way" and do whatever he could to accomodate Dustin. At one time even saying "don't worry about me (or my ball)" when DJ wanted to finish out but was worried about Lee's line.

I noticed him waiting there patiently after Dustin's son and Paulina came to greet him.

Class act.

Ewen Murray on Sky pointed out that players will be desperate to be paired with Lee on Sunday at Royal Troon, as he was paired with Danny Willett & DJ when they won the first two majors of the year.

I commented several times to the guys I was watching with that Westwood was a class act. He was having a terrible day and was fully aware of DJs situation and knew when to step in and also when to get out of the way. I made a statement after he shook DJs hand that I hope he gets his major like Darren Clarke at the Open. Complete Gentleman of the game!

I went to the PGA championship a few years ago in Atlanta. We sat behind a green on a par 3 and watch the players hit into it for a couple of hours. Lee Westwood was the only player to smile and acknowledge everyone who spoke to him. Even talked to a couple of us. I've been a fan ever since.

Lee is a legend! An absolute class act.

To handle himself like that, when he must have been bitterly disappointed reflects amazingly well on him. I bet DJ was delighted that Lee was his playing partner yesterday. Here's hoping that Westy makes the Ryder Cup later in the year.

I've told this story before, but a good 10 years ago I had a brief moment with Lee. I was at Augusta for a practice round and ran into him with several of his Euro buddies at TBonz Steakhouse. It was Sunday night before Monday's practice round. Anyway to make a long story short.....I was headed to the restroom and out comes Lee. I was a good 15 feet away but he stood there to hold the door open for me. A small thing, but it showed me his good manners. Funny how little things like that can make you a fan of someone.

I hate to continue the thread of agreement posts to the OP, but kudos for this post. I tweeted the exact same thing out late last night, after seeing Lee be a class act all day.

I've never really been a fan of Westwood, but yesterday he earned my vote. While he scraped it around on Sunday, he was the constant gentleman, getting out of DJ's way every chance he could, giving him great encouragement, and his caddie did the same thing.

Love to see guys rally around each other like that, THAT's what is good for the game. NOT the USGA.

I liked how he waited forever for DJ on hole 17 as Lee hit his second shot first to about 6 feet.

He then watched DJ look over and execute his bunker shot, then look over and execute his first putt and finally watched DJ knock in his oh so important Par putt. Yet he still had to wait because of all the yelling for DJ before he calmly knocked in his birdie putt after what seemed to be 10-15 minutes of waiting and I never saw any body language from him like many others might have shown. Perfect example of how to deal with the situation properly.

Agree.

Great to read + notes here, I felt bad for Lee watching his ball coming off the green and roiling back in one hole, but despite it all he kept it together and was such a great playing partner!

Yeah I'm sure Lee probably would have just packed it up and got out of DJ's way since he was playing so poorly and didn't want to get in DJ's way.  So props to him for being a supportive playing partner and doing his best to stay out of the way while shooting an 80.

Lee definitely stepped up when the ball moved on 5. That in and of itself should have been the end of it. The USGA screwed up. Lee was the bright spot and showed a lot of class all day long. Hope he gets a major soon.

Definitely did not go unnoticed. He actually gave DJ a handshake in the fairway on 18 after DJ stuffed it, then the way he handled the 18th green was pure class, understanding that DJ had a lot going through his mind.

Completely changed my perspective on Westwood. Hope he gets into the mix at The Open.
