Posted ImageNew for 2008, Bridgestone Golf has just announced the new J36 lineup of irons, hybrids, and wedges.

Ever since Bridgestone announced they would begin making golf clubs in the U.S. under the Bridgestone brand, they have maintained better players as the primary focus. The J33 Blade, Combo, and Cavity were all solid products that became favorites among better players for their performance and clean looks. Rather than attempt the "all things to all golfers" mentality of its Tour Stage sister brand in Japan, Bridgestone has embraced it's niche category in the U.S. and the J36 line will seek to compete in the industry in a new way, while still paying homage to their 36 years of innovation as a company. The new line includes three sets of irons, the J36 Blade, J36 Cavity, J36 Pocket Cavity, a new J36 Hybrid, and new West Coast Designs Wedges.

Irons

Bridgestone has continued their commitment to forged irons and the J36 irons will be forged by the Endo Golf Manufacturing facility. The unique forging process utilizes a warm forging and then presses the irons four times at 1600 tons producing a precise initial forging which requires less grinding and finishing along with a more uniform grain structure in the metal. Designed with input from tour players like Fred Couples and Stuart Appleby, all the irons feature a sole that progressively widens from heel to toe making it easier to work the ball. Also, trailing edge relief on all the irons allows the club to drag less through the turf making it easier to play in a variety of conditions. The standard shaft for the line up will be Rifle Project X Flighted. The big change with the J36 line will be complete customization available from Bridgestone. Whatever combination of clubs, shafts, and grips a golfer wants will be possible. Also, since the the club heads were designed in tandem, the specifications were all designed to work in concert with each other. As a result, a golfer wanting a custom set of J36 Blade in PW-8, J36 Cavity in 7-5 J36, and Pocket Cavity in the 4-3 will have no problems doing so.

J36 Blade

The J33 Blade was a direct import from the Tour with input and approval from PGA Tour players like Stuart Appleby. The J33 Blade's long hosel and heel biased center of mass gave better players the control they desire, but also required a tour caliber swing to achieve results. The new J36 blade will still provide players all the control they want, but in a much more playable package. Gone is the long hosel, replaced with a standard sized one making it much more playable.

However, traditional blade players will be glad to know that the muscle is still placed high on the club without cutouts other companies use to make their clubs more forgiving. This club will still be a great option for players looking to control ball flight and maintain accuracy. The topline of the J36 blade is still very thin and frame the ball very will for better players thanks to minimal offset. The thin sole has a slightly blunted leading edge to prevent digging accommodating players who like to hit down on the ball. With a center of gravity located more towards the center of the face, golfers will find a more playable J36 Blade that still provides them all the control they need.

J36 Cavity

A silver medal winner in Golf Digest's 2008 Hot List, the J36 Cavity has recieved some updating. It also has the same trailing edge relief and tapered sole design as the rest of the line. With a slightly wider sole and slightly thicker topline than the blade, it is more forgiving, flies higher, but still provides control for better players and allows the golfer to work the ball in either direction.

J36 Pocket Cavity

The new addition to the J36 line is the Pocket Cavity, so called because of the cavity cut into the back of the club. The cavity moves the center of gravity lower and deeper than any of the other clubs in the line. While this provides the most forgiveness of the entire lineup, it still retains the looks even the most ardent traditionalists will like. Even in the longest irons, the cavity is not visible from address and provides quite a bit of forgiveness while still retaining the feel people have come to trust in other one piece forgings.

The Pocket Cavity is the highest launching club in the line. Although it has a slightly thicker topline than its brothers, it still flows well for those who might be interested in including it as part of a combo set.

J36 Hybrids

The J36 Hybrid is an extension of last year's Gravity Chamber hybrid. The J36 shares the same channel in the sole which increases MOI by moving weight to the perimiter. However, it improves upon the previous version with an updated CAD designed sole, a completely neutral weighting and face angle. The hybrid's deep face and short length make it very playable off the tee and rough as well as from the fairway. The hybrid comes standard with the eighty gram Aldila VS Proto shaft standard. The top line of the club has been fully painted, a look most better players prefer.

West Coast Liquid Copper Wedges

The Satin West Coast Wedges were a big hit for Bridgestone, and the newly updated version capitalizes on the basic design but adds a fully milled face and a raw oil can finish. The milled face allows for a perfectly flat hitting surface for accuracy and the addition of milling marks allows for increased spin on short shots.

Variable Bounce Technology is used on the sole to allow the club the play with full bounce when square and less when the blade is opened or closed. The wedge also has the same long hosel as previous versions giving the club a high center of gravity to help control ball flight height on full swings.

does anyone have any input as to how hi-launch the cavitys are in relation to the new blades? and how much higher do they hit the ball than the old blades?

Thanks
Dan

Thanks for sharing the pictures. I like the head shapes, but I wish they didn't have that blue streak on them. It takes away from the clubs IMO. The original blades and cavities were both very simplistic looking, and that was a good thing.

Wow easyyy! Thanks for sharing this info - Incredible stuff!

2008 may not be another "Year of the Driver." It certainly seems that while Forged Irons are currently a small percentage of equipment sales, it is becoming the hot category, with multi bounce Wedges somewhere in the top five.

It is evident that many companies will at least offer a Forged Muscle Back and/or Blade and a Forged Cavity Back. We see Callaway, MacGregor, and maybe TaylorMade to join the fold.

It also seems evident that Bridgestone is going to go head to head with rival Srixon by offering a Forged Cavity back as well as a Forged Pocket Cavity against the Srixon 701. Both may also looking at the past success of the Mizuno MX-23 and MX-25. Maybe SRI Sports purchase of Cleveland has shook up Bridgestone a bit as it would appear that they are going to step up their game (I refer to selection not already good quality). I applaud Bridgestone for stating exactly where the Irons will be Forged, no on going speculation or debate required.

(The J36 Pocket Cavity reminds me of the Ping S-58, only Forged and it doesn't appear that there is any sort of insert in the cavity).

Thanks! I have been waiting to see these!

Do you have any pics of the sole of the J36 Hybrid. It looks like a deeper faced version of the J33, which I still play. I hope it is more of a players club than the Gravity Chamber hybrid they are comparing it to in the description you posted.

I'm not a huge fan of the blue paint on the irons but other than that everything looks pretty sweet! I'd really like to try that hybrid out. Does anyone know what lofts the hybrid will be offered in? I'd also like to see a close up pic of the milling marks on the face of the wedge. That finish is just awesome.

So far it seems that the general thoughts that these irons look to be a step forward from the J33 line but I would have to disagree. On looks alone, I would have to stick with the J33 cb's that I have. They are much cleaner in appearance by my eye and much more traditional. On looks along I would have to say these are a disappointment. Once they are available and playing reviews come in that maybe a whole nother story...

Umm, In the past I have loved bridgestone's stuff. the J33 CB's, Love my Bridgestone ECU hybrid. BUT,
I am not digging the lines and blue/black paintfill on these irons. The cavity looks just like the old Golfsmith CB' Pro's of old
kinda like these...
http://www.golfsmith.com/products/2468
And if you put those side by side my Srixon 701 tours, the tours win the looks contest hands down (IMO).
I think Bridgestone is heading the wrong way with this look, should have stuck to the clean lines of the previous clubs,Anyone else feeling the same way?
EDIT: I will say, the wedge is awesome looking and i will give it a try, also will hit the hybrid as I like the looks of it. I was just hung up as to how wierd the backs of the irons look.

^^^ I agree. I think the "B" is garbage. Makes the iron less classy. I have the J33 CB's, and after seeing these, have no desire to upgrade via the J36 CB's. Wedges look great though!

If it really bothers you that much, you'll be glad to know that it's paintfill and is easily removed.

Definitely more of a player's club neutral deep face, no bias in either direction. I really like the J36 hybrid a lot. Here is the sole:

I have hit them all and must tell you that they are incredibly solid irons. The trailing edge relief and tapered sole allows them to really cut through the ground easily with minimal drag. Plus the feel is so solid and clean. I'd really suggest trying them before reserving judgement.

Thanks for the pics! I've been wondering what this lineup would look like. They look good but I think the first set of J33 blades and Cavity Backs look better than these. Thats just one person though. I was thinking of getting a set of these when they came out but Im not so sure anymore now.

I love the looks of the blades and the blue streak on the cb doesn't bother me that much at all. The most important thing is how well they play compare to other irons out on the market. Performance is always more important than looks to me.

The blue painfill needs to go, could be stripped out or filled over with white maybe? The blue just doesn't look right. Other than that the setup and overall design looks really good! Thanks for the pics!

i like the looks of the new stuff a lot... i think i may put the newly finished WC wedges in play... the real item intrest should be how they feel and how they play... you shouldnt be so worried about how the back looks only how it appears at address... these are supposed to feel great so i wouldnt write them off just yet... besides i think they look pretty good...

I like the 33 line better. The blue is a definite no no IMO. Either make it a clean classy look o go all the way with a strong color and more a agressive line.

For those interested on the performance side...I've been playing the irons for 3 weeks now and they definitely perform better than the J33 lineup.

In person they have a much cleaner look from address and for the better player there is less offset.

The Pocket Cavity has a very high launch in the long irons, but can still be punched low for wind shots.

Launch is very good with the mid to low irons in both the blades and cavity backs.

The hybrid is much better than the GC Hybrid because it is much better internal weighting. It isn't heel weighted like the old hybrid. Has a very high launch to it and extremely solid feel.

As for the wedges. They can't be beat in the spin category. Anybody that is on the market for a new wedge I would advise you to try this one out. Milled face with extremely wide grooves. I took it out and hit 30 yard and 70 yard shots with it and it had up to 1,000 rpms more spin than the nearest competitor.

I agree that the blue line takes a little bit away from the "classy" look of their other models, but wait to see them in person. They are still very clean and good looking!

I love how people ask "who designs these things"

Just remember maybe they weren't designed for you. So don't go and buy them. There are going to be 100 people that like them and 100 people that don't. It's IMPOSSIBLE to impress everyone with a club.

I agree that it is more important to have a good performing club than anything else. And Bridgestone clubs definitely perform.

People who design the clubs usually don't get a say at what goes on the back anyways. If you were involved in the golf industry you would know that. It's all marketing people who say what goes on the back. The people "who design these things" design the head and the shape. Not all the stuff in the pocket of the club.

So, Kiran, what would be the difference between the J33 CB's and the J36 CB's? The J33's do look better and the J33CB's would be very hard to improve on.

I do think a CLR'd WC Oil Can wedge could find it's way into my bag.

The J36 irons have a smaller head and less offset which makes it easier to work the ball both ways.

sole is different too. The new irons have a little less bounce than the J33 irons

I don't know, I don't really like the looks. The "B" is weird. Also that blue streak is unnecessary.

Might try the wedges though!

Thanks for sharing the pics but I have to say I am not impressed. The paint colors and graphics just don;t do it for me.
