I hit the G and G30 side by side. same lofts ,legths and offset . I hit the regular graphite stock shafts. On perfomance there was hardly any difference. Distance, dispersion, spin numbers were very close.
The G's look much better than the G30 's. They look a bit more compact and almost "playerish" with the chrome finish- very appealing to the eye....
If I had the G30's already, I wouldn't change for the G's because that would be a sizable cost for almost nil benefit in performance; But if money was no matter, I would switch in a heart beat!

Largely due to MtlJeff and InstantOffense - I've been a confirmed G man since the G15s. Unfortunately my technical ineptitude hasn't developed so i'll have to paste a post I made yesterday over on the Tour and Pre release board:

"Just back from a trackman fitting for new irons. Confirmed "G man" since the G15s currently playing G25s black dot "off the shelf" CFS Reg.

Warmed up with my current 6 iron plus 5 balls on the monitor for a baseline. Narrowed my choices down to Ping G, i or Mizuno JPX EZ forged. Used the swing DNA to establish 3 shafts = C Taper Lite, Project X and XP105. Pro gave me EZ (non forged). The EZ NON FORGED 6 iron with C Taper Lite ® absolutely blew my current set up away! Didn't get as good set of figures with the EZ Forged so dismissed them.
It was quite clear that the i and G had some real competition from a surprising outsider! :idhitit:

Pro handed me a Ping with the regular AWT - I was sure it was the i.....of course it was the G. It looked really good behind the ball. Important to note that this was a G 7 iron. We then tried the Project X 5.5 and the Nippon Pro Modus 105 (s). Pro laughed when we analysed the data from the shafts - as near as damn it all identical with fractionally better results from the PX 5.5 and Modus vs the AWT for my swing :read: - personally I like all 3 from a feel perspective.

Got very similar results from the i just not quite as good as the G. The G 7 iron was better (for me) than the Mizuno JPX EZ figures wise and significantly better than my G25s (6) :)

Easy decision in the end = G 4-L Nippon Pro Modus 105 ordered. :taunt: :smilie_ping:

Pro may well send data through to me so I'll post it to help anyone that might be interested (swing speed etc are not up to usual WRX standards so may be of little use!!) :cheesy:"

So thanks MtlJeff and IO (and Nessism as well actually) for "guiding" me to the realisation that I DO need all the help I can get.

MtlJeff - you'd love the new Gs...........

Cheers

I thought for sure you were going to get the Onoff Kuro's. Were you close to pulling the trigger?

I've had g25 irons, twice. I feel the G irons  are superior in looks and off center hits. Most surprising for me was the ball flight, not a typical GI flight. Maybe it's the lofts/shaft awt 2.0 stiff. Flight was very penetrating controlled and it did not want to balloon when hit hard. These are keepers.....until the ho returns that is.....

G's look better than I thought! Still think I prefer the darker look of the G25s/G30s, but they might grow on me.

I went into my iron fitting hoping to get a previous season model.

I nearly choked when the pro gave me a price for the G's, especially when he suggested I buy another 2 glide wedges on top, but they were just so good I had to go for them (minus the wedges)

Saw the full G set today and was impressed.  Compared them against the G30 and the new clubs look nicer in my opinion.  Ping blended the offset more gradually along the hosel and reshaped the heads.  The topline is not thin per say, but thinner.  The heads resemble the iE1's.  Having played various G sets over the last several years I'd say this update is more significantly than most others.  I didn't hit them yet but will...soon.

Went for a fitting session with the Ping rep and was hitting the reg flex awt 2.0 shafted 7i to 180 yards total. He put me to a stiff flex and I lost 10 yards. Anyways we tried a bunch of shafts and I settled for the awt 2.0 reg flex. Dispersion and feel were great.

There is a $150 trade-in credit bonus going on at Golftown so I ordered a set in awt 2.0 reg flex black dot. Also picked up a couple glide wedges as well as they have a promo for free wedge with iron set purchase. 54WS and 60SS for our softer conditions up here in Canada. I used to toy around with thin sole grind wedges but I just don't think the courses here are firm or dry enough for them; I always had it way easier with higher bounce or wider soled wedges.

Should have them in a couple weeks. This is a total turnaround from my current preferences in blades but they were so easy to hit and the new awt shafts felt so good I couldn't resist. I'll probably sell a set of blades soon to thin the herd lol

Great statement there.  In a few years I hope to be scratch or nearly so (hey, I really think this will happen even if I've got a long way to go), but I'm still going to be playing an oversized game improvement iron like the G series.  Mishits happen.  They happen for all variety of reasons -- bad swing, bad focus, bad lie, bad stance, tough unusual shot required, etc., so take all the help you can.

How did you find the forgiveness of the glides? I'm finishing my fitting on tuesday( they only had the 7i for my initial meeting) and I'd like to pick up a 54 and 58 ( maybe even a 50, depends on how I like the G UW). I'm thinking about testing the Cleveland 2.0 cavity back wedges and the glides, maybe the mizuno  s5s. I have / couple SM5s that I really struggle with, so want something a little easier to hit.

My Gs will be stiff awt purple. Thinking about adding the 4 crossover as well, really liked how easy that thing was to hit.

Interested to hear about overall distance of these compared to other manufacturers as well as past Ping G series.  I've tried about every set of Pings in the past 10 years or so, but am still gaming Diablo forged because they seem to be about a club longer than comparably lofted Pings. Love the look and forgiveness of, for instance, the G25's but guess I can't get over hitting an 8 iron my normal 9 iron distance.

Just ordered my G's today.  First set of brand new irons I've every purchased.  My question is the 4i in the set:  I see it's 21*.  My G25 4i was 23* and I hit that fairly well.  Can anyone comment on the 4i in terms of hitting ease?  I'm starting to second-guess my decision to get the 4i, especially since my 3h is 20*

I found the Glides to be pretty forgiving and mesh in with the G iron set nicely. I am a fan of the dyla-wedge grip as gimmicky as it seems. The reduced taper and marking for your hand placement helps me a lot.
Originally I was going to wait for SM6 but ultimately decided to go with the Glide wedges after being fit for them.

I tried the 4 crossover but I could not hit it well. I never got along with driving iron/utility type clubs. I like my hybrids to be on the wood profile design. The crossover also is a lot bigger in person than in pictures. I thought it was a different kind of utility iron but it's quite large!

Enjoy the rest of your fitting!

The g irons lofts actually might work well if you are like me.  I have always loved carrying a 5 wood.  I switched for a while to 4 wood and 3 hybrid combo but eventually went back to carrying a 3 and 5 wood.  I have always hit my 4 iron pretty good.  With the g irons, now I would end up with little better gaps.  Can you tell I'm talking myself into a new set of irons?

I've tried the Gs on multiple occasions in the simulator.  Really liked the Gs and was close to pulling the trigger as I was hitting the 7 iron a good 10 yds farther than my norm.  Then I went in this weekend with my current 6 and 7 irons (nike vr forged PC) for a direct comparison.  The G 7 iron was about a 1/4" longer than my 6 iron and is 30.5* vs the Nike 31*.  Once I hit the G 7i vs my Nike 6i I confirmed there was no actual performance upgrade.  I knew the specs going into the first demo but still almost fell into the trap because seeing those yardages with a "7 iron" was oh so tempting.  All that said, I still might take the plunge when Spring comes around.
