Played with Morgan Hoffman in HS.

He was a freshman and I was a senior. It was either the County Championship or League Championship...I'm not sure. Everyone knew the hype behind him, that he was leaving for some school in the south and that he would eventually be on the tour, and somehow I got paired with him.

Our group was all tied after 5 holes at +1.....he shot 69 or 70, I shot 107.

I seriously wonder if he remembers because the other two kids in our group were both near even par to finish, and I was making 10's left and right. Really nice guy even as a 14-15 year old. He saw how much I was struggling and probably how embarrassed I was and told me to shake it off, and things like that.

I don't remember him being too long, but he was 14-15 at the time so its understandable. I do however remember him being ridiculous with every short approach shot lets say inside 50 yds or so.

Back in the 80's Dwight Nevil was the head pro where we played so got to play with him numerous times. He played on tour in the 70's and won the old Magnolia State Classic, played opposite the Masters, twice.

He was a ball-striker. One day I saw him shoot 30 on the front nine and he made it look ho-hum. He hit every green and never had a birdie putt over about 15 feet. Saw him shoot in the low 60's numerous times. I remember him not even teeing his driver up on holes that were playing into a good wind. He would just throw the ball down on the tee and hit it. It was amazing to watch. The story was that he could ever make it on tour because he couldn't putt good enough. Man, you could have fooled me.

Back then, there was always a tournament in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area for head pros and their club champion. My wife won the club championship either 7 or 8 years in a row and she and Dwight would go play in this tournament. They would either win it or finish in the top 3 pretty much every year.

Dwight grew up in Denison, Texas (me and the wife lived in Sherman, Texas) and he was a super, super good guy. He actually took another head pro job in the area and numerous people moved their membership to where he went. He was that well-liked.

Hey North Texas - Was born in Denison (1942) but did not grow up there (Dad was Air Force).  My mom was born and raised there and her Dad was the county clerk for Sherman County for 40 years or so.  I met Dwight when he and I were both playing on the Sr. PGA Tour back in the mid 90's.  Great guy and his wife (Sandy??) and my wife got on great.  If you see him, give him by best.

Ok Bro, let's reverse this if you're game....

You're probably still havin occasional nightmares or flashbacks from a few jerk-off Ams that it was your distinct Pleasure to smile and take it like a man with for the better part of five hours of unalterated hell in a Pro/Am or three :)

How bout a few of the "better" stories, lol

Stay Well My Friend, Happy New Year and The Best to Ya this Season :)

Golfingly Yours,
RP

My dad, not an excellent golfer with a 14hc, used to play a fair amount with Paul casey at wisley in I think the 1990's. At the time Paul was working behind the bar to get playing rights for the course, and my dad often tells me about shots he hit and how solid he was, at the time I guess he was a +3 ish handicap (uk). I've also played and hit balls next to francesco molinari and Ross fisher at the range at wisley, and seen monty practising his short game there. All of these guys are just so consistent and strike the ball so well.

I played a round with Harold Varner III when he was still in college. He shot 67 that day with 7 bogies!! He didn't even have his best stuff that day. Tough course of slope 72.3 (7145 yards) I knew that kid was going to be special on tour one day.

Ten years ago I walked on a single  and played Harbor Town. I was paired with three guys who played on the European equivalent of the Web.com tour. They were all from Scotland and on a two week golf junket to the US. They were an absolute hoot.  The  biggest difference I could see with their games is if they missed a green they were able to get up and down nine out of ten times while I am lucky to get up and down two out of ten times.  Their short games were incredible.

Back in the late 90's I played a couple of times with Dennis (Trix) Trixler (currently Tom Lehman's caddy) the guy could flat out play and is also a chef, not sure if I enjoyed the meal he cooked after the round or all the jokes he told while we played better.

If you love golf and Rick Reilly from SI this is a must read article about when he played with Trix as his partner in the Pebble beach Pro-Am:  http://www.si.com/vault/1993/02/15/106784788/sos-from-the-att

Also played in Georgia with Tommy Aaron the 1973 Masters champ he was a good friend of my fathers cousin and would take him out to Augusta once a year for 36.

We all had singles matches and I had Mr Aaron down at the turn, all i could think about was having him sign the bill he was going to pay me off with, off course I gagged coming in and had to pay him, no he didn't ask me to sign :)

Assuming par 72....he made 12 birdies?? (edit: woops, that would require 19 holes.....10 birdies and an eagle?? Seems equally crazy for an "off day!")

There is no way it was 72. That be unreal to make no pars. Thats just either a good stretch of great iron play with some great putting, but then he didn't even get up and down once!?!

I have played with Jeff Overton a couple of times.  First was at Victoria National in Evansville during the Indiana Amateur.  That's a very tough course and he made it seem like a walk in the park.  Can't remember what he shot, but he ended up winning the tournament by a lot and I missed the cut.  The thing I'll never forget was how consistent he was off the tee.  I don't think he missed a fairway the whole week.  That set him up to hit a lot of greens and he was fearless with the putter.

I played with Lanto Griffin a couple of times a few years ago.  The experience was humbling to say the least.  No matter how well I play, I couldn't do what he does.  I have followed his career ever since.  He made it to second stage of Q-school this season after winning the first stage event in Kannapolis, NC at Irish Creek.  He won an event earlier this year on the PGA Tour LatinoAmerica.

Lanto has caddied for his roommate Will Wilcox on the PGA Tour some as well.

I played with Lanto last year at Duke for local US Open qual. He hit it a ton and very very straight. All the winter rot from winter 2014-15 made the course even more difficult than normal. I shot 75 and he finished (played front 9 last) birdie birdie eagle I think to shoot 68....

Back in the 80's I played two rounds with Roberto De Vicenzo in his home course.  The first time he treated us to lunch and golf as my family had taken care of his ailing brother until his death.

I'll never forget the first tee.  We'd just finished lunch and the Maestro just took his driver and without a single practice swing just parted the fairway.  I also remember how nervous I was as a kid and how quickly the old man made you feel at home.  On a certain hole I drive to the right and my ball ends up in a wood.  There was a tight spot to hit a banana to the green, but I opted to play safe back to the fairway.  El Maestro comes along, takes a ball and his black driver and says to me "I'd have played it like this". He hits a perfect banana and the ball ends up on the green.

I'll never forget his hands, how big they were and how the clubs looked tiny in his hands.  It was also impressive his ability to make any type of shot, controlling curves and eight at will.  It's not easy to understand how these golfers can control the ball until you see them live.

I've played with a couple of Latinamerican PGA Tour pros, they are unbelievably consistent and they seldom miss a green or a fairway when they practice, but my rounds with De Vicenzo are among my fondest memories, the caliber of his golf was out of this world even in his 60's.

Played with several LPGA players when the company I worked for used to buy a pro-am spot at the old Chick-Fil-A tournament in McDonough, GA. Karrie Webb, Catriona Matthew (twice), Laura Diaz, Hee-won Han. All were great experiences, Laura Diaz probably the most outgoing & fun. She ate with her pro-am team at the sandwich buffet when we finished, never saw any other pros do that. Remember years ago when there was an ill-conceived attempt to require all the Korean players to learn English? Hee-won Han's English was far better than mine. Their control over the golf ball was humbling, especially Webb. Every shot she hit all day long was flushed & dead hole high; it may have been 15 feet right or left but her distance control was the best I've ever seen. She & Matthew were also longer than you realize watching them on TV. Hee-won Han, on the other hand, was a short hitter & spent all day hitting green after green with mid-irons & hybrids. Catriona Matthew & her husband Graeme (also her caddy) had become friends with my boss who lived on the golf course, Eagle's Landing. They stayed with him during the tournament so got to hang around with them a bit more. Very warm & personable, really enjoyed conversations with them & listening to their Scottish accents.

Never played with a PGA player once they were on tour. I was living in Augusta & playing a lot when Charles Howell III was in his early teens. He was already a big name junior player when he was 13-14. As you can imagine he was small for his age & always worried about how far he hit the ball. Can't believe how his perceived weak spot now is his short game, I remember just how good a short game he had as an undersized 13-year old!

Four times.

Cindy Figg-Currier in a First Tee tournament. She hit every drive right down the middle.

Mark Brooks in another Charity event - he was not very personable.

Omar Uresti in a First Tee tournament.  Omar (or slow mar) hit's it very straight but not far.

Hennie Otto from South Africa.  We were walk ons at Turnberry and got paired together.  It was wonderful.  I didn't know who he was, so I asked him if he would play the back tees with me.  He said fine.  After about three holes I realized how good he was and asked him what business he was in.  He said he just got his tour card back.  We had a great time.

Well- I've been fortunate to have played with quite a few. Most notable would have to be Tiger when we were on the AJGA tour in High School

Justin Leonard- we were paired a lot together in High School
Spike McRoy- close friend - won the old BC Open
Craig Kanada- probably my closest friend. We play every day almost. He won twice on the Nationwide tour and chipped in to beat Kuchar at the tour championship
Bronson Burgoon- play with him regularly. Have since he was 12. him and his brother are just awesome
John Mahaffey- played out of the club I was and have been a long time member of.
Devon Carey- web. com guy
Patrick Reed- member at my club
Mark O'Meara- member at my club and one of the nicest guys I've ever met
Mark Brooks-....
Darren Clarke- I almost wet myself from laughing all day
Roland Thatcher- we grew up together and played high school golf on the same team
Rich Barcelo- one of the nicest guys ever

Pretty sure there are a few more but can't think off the top of my head...watching the olympics!!!
You buds with a Craig Hurlbert?

A few 4th of July's ago I played with a Web.com player and his Dad.  The Web.com guy might be the longest player and best ball striker I've played with.  He reached each par 5 in two, drove 2 par 4s including 1 of 370 yards, hit 15 greens and shot something like 75 with 39-40 putts.  The only birdies made were on 2 of the par 5's with 2 putts.

As soon as the long putter came out of the bag, it was obvious he had problems.  His Dad said he practiced putting for hours daily, worked with several instructors but was just a habitually bad putter.

Have played with a few other pros including Jan Stephenson and Billy Casper in Bermuda.

Played with a few, most of them Canadian/Latino American/Mini Tour guys, but the big names would be Steve Stricker, Andy North, and Jerry Kelly. It's always fun when you're able to be incredibly humbled playing the game with those guys watching some of the lines that they take off of tees and shots they are able to hit into greens.

Vokey SM5, 52.08, 56.10, 60.08 all with hard stepped KBS Tour-V S
Byron DH89 or Piretti Proto

The bag is always a work in progress.

Are there 3 nicer guys than Andy, Stricker and Kelly?  Hard to find better people and they're all Cheeseheads!

Played behind Bubba Watson several times in JuCo before he went to Georgia.  He could hit the ball a mile back then too.... Just fun to watch.

I played with Lanto last year at Duke for local US Open qual. He hit it a ton and very very straight. All the winter rot from winter 2014-15 made the course even more difficult than normal. I shot 75 and he finished (played front 9 last) birdie birdie eagle I think to shoot 68....

Thought I would update this.  Lanto was medalist in second stage of Q-School to advance to the finals next month.

I played a round with Harold Varner III when he was still in college. He shot 67 that day with 7 bogies!! He didn't even have his best stuff that day. Tough course of slope 72.3 (7145 yards) I knew that kid was going to be special on tour one day.

Why are you banned dude?   I was gonna ask you and Harold to come on over...we are just 20 minutes from Gas town, around the corner from Quail.   What with Xmas coming and all,, I would LOVE to knock it around with a fella like u.
