Why is it that PGA tour players still keep each other's score by scorecards? It seems sort of unnecessary with all the scoreboards around and the cameras on the players at all times. I know many other people have thought this too. Why is it?? I don't really see there ever being a problem with cheating out on the PGA tour with the thousands of spectators and cameras watching the players.

It's obvious that they could do away with it, but I would be sorry to see that happen. For one, it is a great little exercise that keeps the pro game closer to the day-to-day players. Secondly, there is a lot of tradition in scorecards. My favorites, easily, are the four from the '80 Open for Nicklaus that Isao Aoki signed. Quirk of the pairings and the results, but Aoki kept Jack's score all four rounds. Nicklaus' signatures look like he used the edge of the lead in a calligraphy style. There was a guy who knew what it meant before it happened.

You keep your own score. You keep your partner's score's. It makes you responsible for yourself and to protect the field.

In a world where personal responsibility (hell, responsibility of any kind) is disappearing, keeping your score yourself is more important than ever.

Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should. I believe it is important to the integrity of the game and the people who play it that players keep score.
