If you won the lottery which top 100 clubs that you could actually join (e.g. forget Augusta) would you want to try and join?

Since I live in Nashville, I'd say the Honors.  If I retired and moved somewhere else, my answer would change based on proximity.

Logistically for me I'd join Rock Creek Cattle Company in Montana. Now if the lottery was substantial I'd by a ranch in Colorado and join Ballyneal.

Dismal River or Kingsley Club. Never been to either one but from looks and reviews they would be what I'm looking for.  Good golf with a remote away from civilization feel to it

I would look for a club that had a small membership and national members.
But, given the opportunity, Pine Valley would be #1.

Pinehurst is a pretty good spot, especially considering all the other golf in the area.  Although, I would probably be just as interested in taking that money and flying out to Bandon whenever I feel like it for long buddies weekends of golf.  But if I could pick any club to join that would be number 1 on my wish list, I'd say Cypress (although that doesn't answer the OP's question).

Given that I'm not all that fixated on Top 100 courses other than playing them once, I'd actually prefer to be a member of multiple nice clubs instead of a single Top 100 course. Although being a member of a Top 100 probably makes getting reciprocals a good bit easier.

My FIL has the right idea. Summer club, which is one of the better privates in town, and a winter club near his condo in West Palm.

Just the effect that being in Pinehurst has on you i feel like is something that would never go away.  You have Mid Pines, Pinewild, Dormie Club, 1-9 courses, just a really tough area to beat IMO.

Tough question. Even if you have the money, many of the Top 100 clubs are unfortunately still almost impossible to get into unless you know a member or two already.

I know the Pro at #1-5. We stopped there on the way back from Myrtle Beach last spring. We had lunch there, and they treated us like we had been members there our entire lives. We spent 2.5 hours there, and we stayed around the clubhouse/practice area. I really like the Sandhills area, and the Village of Pinehurst and Southern Pines are nice towns.

Many if not most
The highest ones you can join would be Prairie Dunes, Ballyneal, probable a few others in between.

That is precisely what I'm saying. I also could practice for 94 straight hours w/those practice facilities. I will never be able to afford that, but a kid can dream.

You don't need the lottery to join at Pinehurst....pretty inexpensive membership if you live there

I think like $15k initiation and $375/mo. For 9 courses and practice facility of that level, it's a steal

The one that I Play out of(well, when I was Playing, I Played out of, lol)-

It's been as high as 52 and though not presently in the "Top-100," we as recently as 3 years ago were 87th-

It's an old school Eastern Club, and was actually started over a century ago by the Irish Catholics who had the money but not the pedigree, as they were unable to join the club across the street, the archetypical "WASP" Club.

I had the opportunity to join there in '92, as they wanted to beef up their Inter-Club presence, however I was still bitter about being basically dung in '86, when my sponsors, both past Club-Presidents, one a two-timer and the other also a member at Augusta and Pine along with being a renowned surgeon, were told before hand to pull my name because I would not get through the voting.

The surgeon, a close friend of my Father's, called me and left the decision up to me-

I told em to yank me-

I didn't want to put them through that as the name of prospective member and his sponsors gets posted on public board in the main entrance. I didn't give a s*** because I didn't Play there much and when I did Play there, I beat their bois like a drum, lol...

So yea, I'm right where I wanna be :)

Have a nice week Gents :)

Fairways & Greens My Friends,
Richard

I am not sure if it is still the case, but I think you have to own property in Pinehurst.

I know a few people that are members and they have always said owning property is a prerequisite. Doesn't seem like that great of a deal to me. Too many people and competition for prime tee times.

If all you want to do is join a top 100 club - would suggest you join the one nearest where you live.   You don't need the lottery to join - you need a good job and a little savings...but MORE importantly you need members to invite/sponsor your application.

The lottery might be important if you wanted to join a 2nd or 3rd Top 100 club - since they might be far away from where you currently live....and you will add the cost of airfare and/or an addition home and cars to the location of the 2nd and 3rd clubs.  :)  Getting into the 2nd and 3rd are easier since you're already a member of your 1st already.

After digging up the ground with my swing, any of them would probably give me my money back and ask me to never play there again. LOL
