I'm getting ready to purchase a winter home and I have settled on Jacksonville.  I am going to be there on business during the next few days and I am also planning a late January trip to do some house/condo hunting again in late January/early February.

Since I'm not yet retired I probably won't join a private club until I can be down there for extended periods but I'd like to hear some recommendations for good public courses around town.

Thanks for any advice.

Any particular reason you have jax?  There are some great little towns around there. I'm an hour west of there. It's great. Small town. Close to Gainesville Jacksonville and Tallahassee.  45 minutes to Gainesville, about an hour to jax and an hour and a half to tally. This general area is fantastic. We moved here in May and love it.
My company has an office in st Simons GA   Very nice as well.

I need to be close to the Jacksonville airport and I like living in a decent size city.  I'm pretty good with where I am going to live I'm just looking to scout out some daily fee courses within 30-45 minutes.  It's so hard to rely on reviews because I've seen really good reviews for courses that are actually dumps.  The other problem is a lot of the reviews you will find are directed towards vacationers and I'm really looking to find a place with a good course and a decent game.

I like North Hampton a lot.  Close to the airport.  Challenging layout in very nice condition.

North Hampton is nice. Deerwood is also very good as is St. John's. I considered the three years I was corporately relocated to JAX like a prison sentence though. I hated living there. Really can't say a single good thing about it other than it doesn't get too cold in the winter.

Another vote for North Hampton.  I have a buddy who is a member.  I try to get down there 1 or 2 times a year.   After a few years of neglect they have started putting money into tidying up the place and last year it was in great shape.  Fantastic layout - especially the back 9.

North Hampton looks like my kind of course.  I'm going to try to get out there Monday or Tuesday to check it out.

I liked Southhampton while I was there.  Wonderful greens.  St. Johns/St Augustin lots of great courses.  If you're up north of Jax...might as well hit Amelia.   Wonderful tracks.

Yeah. You chose a great place.
Tons of cool places to play. I'm a little far for too much golf in jax, but if we need something we don't have its not to far to get it as Gainesville has most and jax has everything else. We looked at Jacksonville but it was a little too big for my wife (we are from a small town in Louisiana) so it's nice that we aren't too far from there.

Moving down there will be a process but I've got earning power right now and I know I am going to retire down south eventually so now is a good time to start footing the bill.  It's about a 15 hour drive so it is much more doable than the places I've looked at out west.  I'm not a big fan of hot weather so the winter temps are suitable and I'll be able to stay longer than somewhere in the desert.  I've built my business around clients who are in cities that Southwest flies to and JAX offers a good mix of flights.  Logistically JAX is about as perfect as it gets.  I've also spent a lot of time in the Carolinas so it is appealing to me to be drivable from there.

Now I just need to find good courses and a decent game to play in and get used to the greens and rough.

my little course in Lake City is a nice track... its semi private... greens fee is about 45 with a cart...  worth driving over and playing at least once...

let me know and I will set you up if you want.

Anywhere to play around Camden Co, GA. About 30 minutes from Jax?  Looking at a 2nd home there.

Another vote for North Hampton.  Cimarrone was nice a few years ago when I played it, not sure about today though.
I played Palencia a couple times this year and it was a nice track.  Hammock Dunes Creek (I think that was the name?) was another nice course.
Been looking at houses in that area myself.  Can't decide between Jacksonville, St. Aug, or Ponte Vedra.  Have friends with a place on Amelia Island.  They have some good golf too.

I'm playing North Hampton this Saturday before flying out to Phoenix for what I hope will be a golf extravaganza.
