Davis Love just finished remodeling a course in my hometown of Kannapolis, NC. This is the home of late Dale Earnhardt, the future NC Research Campus, and the former Fieldcrest Cannon/Pillowtex Corporation. The club was renamed Club at Irish Creek (www.liveatirishcreek.com) from Kannapolis Country Club. The club, town, and major part of the NC Res. Campus is owned by David Murdoch (Sherwood CC, and a few other exclusive clubs). Kannapolis has always been a low key town that focused around the cotton mill, but with its demise and the rise of what is touted to be "the most technologically advanced research campus in America", it is rapidly changing. The course has always been a premier course as it has hosted stage 1 Q school many times and has had a great reputation in the piedmont NC area. The club was closed for the last 10 months and was just reopened this weekend. It was nice before, but WOW..this course is as good as they come now...Secondly, this was not a golf community before but is now, with home sales and construction beginning later this year. Also, new memberships will be open only to those who are purchasing a home. This post has no other point but to simply give appreciation to a beatiful golf setting and let all you golf fans know about it. I hope to play it next weekend and will let you all know of the results. Good Golfing!!

I almost forgot about this post...it has been three months since the course opened and I have played it 2 times..which is pretty good considering I no longer live in Kannapolis....Anyway...this thing is a BEAST! The front is fair and birdies can be made (~3300 yds from the tips). However, the back is a monster (almost 3900 yds from the tips) ..2 par fives that are close to 600 yds and two par 4's that always play into the wind that are in the 480's and a closing par 3 that is 250 yards..oh yeah..par 71. It is beautiful, though. And in my opinion, could host a tour event in the coming years and could test the hell of the best players in the world. The first time I played was in November, it was 40 degrees with a crisp wind and I played from the tips. I played my a** off and shot 80. It was one of the toughest rounds I can remember. The breaks in the greens are super subtle and some of the bunkers are very penal. But, all that said, the fairways are plenty wide and "forgiving". My second go at it was about a month ago with very nice weather. Shot a 74 with two double bogeys thanks to three putts. Only made 1 birdie. The course is a test of golf without a doubt and I look forward to playing again when everything is green and mature again.

I played this course in a tournament a few years ago and really didn't care for it. My dad played it the other week and said it is hands down one of the best courses in the area now. My dad is not one at all to exagerate about golf courses at all either. Everything I've read about and heard about it is that this course might find itself on the Top 100 Modent Golf Course list this year and is now a top 5 course in the Charlotte area.
