If golf were a 9 hole game I'd be a much lower cap. I have had loads of even and sub par 9s but only two even par 18 hole rounds in 30 years of playing. Having said that, 9 holes always leaves you wanting more. I prefer 18. I would actually like to see 12 hole rounds and competitions. 12 would save time without feeling like you only played half a round.

I rarely play 18 at one time anymore. I just have too many other things I like doing that it's hard to set aside 4-5 hours of a day just for golf. Like someone else said, I'd rather play 9 holes twice a week than 18 once. I never use to feel that way so that's just age talkin'. Now, if I was retired with nothing else to do,that's a different story.
I have a excellent short game. It's unfortunate that it starts on the Tee.

I play 9 holes about 10 times more often than I can play 18, just not enough hours available most of the time. 9 is enough to remind me I stink but give me those 1-2 shots that bring me back. I tend to play better on the second 9 if i can get 18 in, time to settle in and slow down a bit I suppose. Quite a few times I will "play" 3-4 holes before dark, or play 2-3 balls in from 150 for a few holes.

I like to play 9 during the week and 18 on the weekends unless I need to do something around the house on the weekends then I'll play 9 and be content.

I live a less-than-5-minute golf cart drive from my home course and play nine frequently....usually in the hour before I need to start fixing dinner, & no one else is on the course.  One hour is all I need, sometimes less.  My neighbors think I'm nuts of course, they don't know many women who do this on a regular basis. :taunt:

If I have to choose between not playing and playing only 9, I'll play 9 every time. But I'm also one of those people that would play until more than 18 if I could. If I didn't have a wife and kid to get home to, I'd probably just play till I dropped.

I don't have the attention span to do anything for 5 hours, so 9 holes is perfect for me and 18 holes is only enjoyable if the course is empty and I can finish the round in under 3 hours.  If I could find other 9 hole leagues that I liked I would just play in those during the week and not do 18 hole rounds at all.

It takes me anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes to reach a course from my place. When you factor in the drive and warm-up time, I'd spend more time not golfing if I simply played 9 holes. 'Not worth the effort.

For years I've been saying that courses should be reduced to 14 holes. It would take roughly an hour off the round, and if it wasn't enough, one could play another 7 easily. Also, two rounds a day would be much easier, especially in the spring/fall when daylight is at a premium.

Jackson Park GC, a Chicago Park District course, is offering a 5 hole round at 5 pm this summer. I believe it costs $10. The 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 17th, and 18th holes are used. Interesting idea for local folks.

If Jackson park is anything like Waveland, that five hole round will probably take two hours.. :)

I don't mind playing 9 holes with 2 balls if I'm practicing or tight for time. I also don't mind playing 9 with the wife since I think thats just about all she likes.

but the challenge of closing out 18 holes with a good score is where its at. Nothing worse than leaving the course after 9 when your playing well or just getting going.

Actually, it's not. JP has excellent pace of play for a muni. I've played it dozens of times over the past 10 years, and I believe my longest 18 hole round was 4:30. An average round is 4 hours.

OTOH, "Waveland" is a nightmare, which is why I avoid it like the plague.

Well that's indeed nice to hear. slow pace of play is always something that rubs me the wrong way a bit.

I assume you don't refer to it by its original name-judging by the quotes..

Like "kissing your sister".  9 is never enough for me.  Don't even like to go through the "process"...stretching, practicing, range time, putting green...for only 9 holes.

Wait, so you want to do MORE than just kiss your sister???? :busted_cop:

Like others have said, if I have a choice I'll play 18, but I'll take what I can get/have time for.  If 9 is all I can squeeze in, I'd rather play than not.

This is a great idea.  Thanks for posting this information.  I wish more courses in the area would try things like this.

No, it was renamed Sydney R Marovitz GC years ago, and most folks I know that play there simply refer to it as "Marovitz". It's a pity, because it's a decent layout on a great lakefront location. Unfortunately,  3 hour rounds for 9 holes is not uncommon. I did manage to play 18 there one Sunday in less than 4 hours, but it was 42 degrees, 15 mph winds, and a steady rain. :golfer:

I enjoy 18 holes, but think the game would be more attractive to new players in general if it was 12-14 holes as 4-5hrs of the day is too much for many people.

Agreed. When you factor in travel and warm-up time, a door-to-door round of golf can exceed 6 hours easily. I've played a few distant suburban courses on the weekends, and it's been 7.5 hours.

Interesting that you all refer to it as Marovitz when I've not once heard it called that...

It is indeed a pretty decent layout but far too slow. Used to play there in the early nineties between trading sessions at the CBOT (when there was a night session). Used to be a couple guys selling Budweiser on the other side of the fence for $2 a can. Good times...

I normally only play 9 holes. Rarely play with anyone since all my friends work days, and I work nights. So 9 holes is pleanty before I get bored. I always walk as well, but use a push cart due to shoulder issues. Sometimes I'll play whatever 9 I want and then skip to my favorite holes on the other 9. The course isn't very busy and if it is, most of them are retired seniors. They see me by myself and let me go ahead. After I make my fairway shot, I'll spot for them since they spot my drives! I have a bad habit of pulling my head and when I do, the ball goes two fairways over so I need to keep my head down and have a spotter.

9 holes is about 80-90 minutes by myself. I can crack out a full 18 in under 3 hours. Back 9 holes are a lot closer together.

If the pace of play is good and I'm playing well I can play 36 walking.

Leave work, play a quick nine, run home eat dinner, watch a show, get in some  lovin and sqeezin' go to bed. Wake up go to work, get off at five head to the course, play a quick nine, head home, eat dinner, watch an episode on tele, get some lovin' and squeezin, go to bed, repeat daily....
It's quite obvious to me, that you're much younger than I.

Definitely not enough for me.

Plus, given the course prices for 9 holes, it feels like a better deal playing the full 18.

Sometimes I only have time to play 9 holes, but I feel that's not enough. I played a 12-hole golf course last summer, and I thought that was perfect on days when I cannot play 18.
