I love golf. I would play everyday and hit range balls before and after the round.  For some reason I think 9 holes is just right.  I rarely play 18. Probably less than 10% of the time. Its not a fitness issue. I am in good shape and always carry my bag. Sometimes it is a time thing. As much as I love golf I refuse to be on the course for 5+ hours.  But even when I am the only guy on the course I am satisfied after 9 holes. Anyone else feel the same?

9 is nice for me.  I find I sort of hit the wall at #12 or 13 and it is hard to keep it going for 18.  My scores tend to show it too.

I can't remember the last time I only played 9 holes. If I can't play a full 18 I'd rather not go at all. ;)

I am the same way. If I can't play 18 I'd rather not go. If there is a chance I can't finish 18 I'd rather not go. If I am on the course and it rains I'll finish 18 no matter how hard it pours. I wouldn't feel right just playing 9 or anything less than 18.

I think 27 is the right number. My group use to play 36 holes a lot then we got old. I'd have to agree with them I get tired walking 36 most days now.  27 is still a breeze.

Like "kissing your sister".  9 is never enough for me.  Don't even like to go through the "process"...stretching, practicing, range time, putting green...for only 9 holes.

It is all stimulus / response. If golf had been only nine holes since its inception, then most folks would be satisfied with that amount. In fact, most large cities have nine hole courses galore. Some folks play a second round on those nines, sometimes from alternate tees. Often par 3 courses (or short courses) are set up that way to make the holes seem different.

There is such a short 9 hole course at my full length home course. I convinced my neighbor, a 34 HDC, that playing that course would build his game and allow him to practice approach shots. He plays it exclusively now and once every couple of months I join him. We have never had a desire to play it over again on that day.

Another view is that there are 18 "different" experiences in a normal golf round. If one doesn't take those 18 challenges then some feel that the opportunity is lost and the golf experience is shorted. It is all in what one is used to.

I agree with Greenie in that a 36-hole day was the norm when young. I couldn't wait to go around again to see where strokes could be gained and score improved. A few years later, 27 holes was plenty. Now, 18 holes fulfill my golf fix. Afterwards a nap is a necessity. It won't be a surprise to see 9 holes as a sufficient effort for the day.

I'd be pretty happy if I could play 9 holes every evening after work, but I'd still want to play 18 at least one day on the weekend.

9 holes is fore play as someone mentioned... having said that during the week 9 holes is all I can get in after work in Summer down here so I will take 2 9 holes during the week (and 1 or 2 18 holes on the weekend) rather than nothing (and the 1 or 2 18 holes on a weekend) I get now in winter\heading into winter.

Sometimes I think 2 hours of practice plus 9 holes does me more good than 18 holes. It seems like an offseason strategy that could work - I did it a couple times during phoenix winters and it was fun.

9 is fine when there are time constraints but always feels like
a partial round to me. Can't just double a 9 hole score and think
that's your game. It's much harder to sustain your game for a full
18.

But, hey, if you just like to play 9, why not? Lots of people do it.

I enjoy a casual 9 afterwork form time to time. But that more about hitting balls. If I am golfing it has to be 18.

I'm not picky. I'll play whenever I can.  If it's 18, great! If I can only get in 9 I'm happy too. Shoot I'm happy any time I can get to the practice range for a while and spend time around the chipping green and grabbing a small bucket or if a friend asks me to play some backwater course with weeks on the green. Regardless I'm having a good time and working on my game.

I play the back nine, figuring the wife would rather I play the front nine when I get home.

Okay, not true.

When I had less time to play, kids were young, a quick walking nine was great.

Now, not so much. Played 36 Friday, 18 Saturday, 27 Monday. Great weekend.

9 doesn't do it for me.  Especially if it's a great 9, then you really want to put a solid 18 together.

In the league I'm in, which is 9 holes, it seems like I always play my best on the last 3 or 4 holes. I just can't get going on the first few. It might help to hit range balls before the round, but is there a reason why you hit range balls after instead of playing another 9? I guess where I play it doesn't take 5+ hours for 18, maybe that's why. Does it take that long on all of the courses in your area?

I'd love to play 9 holes everyday and that would be enough to keep me happy, but if its only once or twice a week, then it has to be 18.
If I head to the course with the intention of playing 9 holes, I'll normally play quick and get 12-14 holes played instead.

Would rather play 9- 2x per week instead of 18- 1x per week.

Playing 18 during the work week is often not an option.

I would play way more golf if the entire thing took 2-3 hours instead of 5-6. I don't care about the # of holes, but right now a round of golf can kill most of a day. I've got a lot other things I enjoy doing, so golf sometimes feels like it takes forever.
