I'm going to be moving to Louisville soon and want to join up a course or club. Not really looking to spend more than $1,500 a year. It's just me. I like to walk 9 holes 3-4 times a week, and play 18 once or twice a week. I am getting a PHD and wont be working so I'll have plenty of time to play.

Most important for me is 1) value and quality of the course within my budget 2) ability to have friends join me at a reasonable cost, 3) social events and younger people to meet (i'm 27 and wont know anyone except my girlfriend).

Recommendations?

Where will you be living?

UofL club has a great course that might be in your budget if you are going to be a student there (the student rate is pretty cheap), but it is a good half an hour drive from the city.

I can probably give you a few options depending on where you live and how far you are willing to travel.

I'd be willing to travel any distance if the course is a perfect fit, but would prefer under 30min. I'm living in old louisville right next to U of L.

Given that your in Old Louisville, most of the courses that would be in your budget are at least 30 minutes away. A few to check out:

UofL Golf Club - at least 45 minutes away, UofL team plays there, probably has a good student membership rate.

Nevel Meade - 30-40 minutes away, semi-private, has a walking membership and a cart membership, not much in the way of social events, golf only

Most every other private is going to be out of your price range. Given where you live, you are actually closer to a lot of Indiana courses than Louisvile courses. Elks Run in Jeffersonsville might be worth checking out.

However, If I was in your situation, I would get the yearly membership at Chariot Run. It's the course affiliated with the Horseshoe Casino. The place is a huge pain to get to (about 40 minutes from Old Louisville in Indiana), but it has some of the best greens you can find in the area (they consistently stimp at 10.5 to 11.5), and the conditions are usually immaculate. Membership with cart is only about $1500, too. No social aspects though.

To be honest, the third part of your request is going to be really difficult to satisfy at your budget.

Thanks, that makes sense. I figured that 1,500/year is on the low end of most budgets for this sort of thing. Does anyone have input on woodhaven?

I would check it out. I am sure they would let you play it as a prospective member. I didn't suggest it initially since their standard junior rate would run about $1800 per year BEFORE cart fees. They have a 100 a month deal for junior members that join together. You might be able to negotiate a similar rate if you mention that you are moving to town. From what I hear, it's pretty busy. Some people like that, and some don't. Since you probably would be a bit more flexible than the typical weekend golfer, that might not be an issue for you. It's not particularly long, but they usually have pretty good greens. Plus they have a pool and a par 3 course.

It's about 25 minutes fro Old Louisville if traffic is decent. I'm actually a member at a nearby course (Wildwood CC). Feel free to PM me.

For that Budget I would go with Chariot Run, They are 1100 the rest of the year. Greens will stimp over 12 for most of the summer, best conditioned public type course in the area. I think the drive will be closer to 25 to 30 min.

If you are going to be here for a few years, you can check out Persimmon Ridge. They are running some really great deals for members under 40. The club has just changed ownership and they are going to be spending a lot of money. They have already started work on their range, and will be sodding the fairways with zoysia later this year, so that might be a draw back for you. It is one of the hardest courses in Louisville if not the state.

Thanks for all the input. Currently doing a ton of research into all of those as well as a general search. Anyone have a review on Quail Chase? Seems to be a good value ($1,000 walking, free range balls) and is cheap enough that I can have friends play with me whenever they want. I liked Chariot Run and still may go that route... but I have a feeling at $60/round for guests, i'll need to find another member to play with

My buddies and I had a nickname for Quail Chase. We called it "Snail Chase". Pace of play has been brutal every time I played there. Not sure if it still is, but make sure you check it out at the times you would normally want to play. They used to do a lot of leagues and stuff out there, and the place could get pretty beat up at time. Range is also short, so I don't think you can hit driver.

Quail has three nines that are very different. One tough, one easy, and one medium. Like the layout on two of the nines, hate the third (the easy one). The good news is that it's public so it's easy to check out and see if you like it.

Good luck on your search!

Nobody is ever going to pay 60 bucks a round at Chariot, even the pro told me to book online if I was bringing friends in on a weekend, it would be closer to 49, and during the week you can expect to pay around 40 online, with several hot deal times in the early afternoon under 25. The most I have ever paid to play here is 42 bucks, and you can't beat the conditions anywhere public around here.  Chariots last Superintendent is now at Valhalla.

I'm not positive on the distance from Old Louisville, but I believe South Park has run either a 700 or 900 dollar membership the last few years. I played in a tourney there last year and it is a solid old course.  Pretty active membership as well I believe.

I've never played woodhaven but hear it's not bad.  Depends on what you are looking for. Supposed to be a very active social club.

Persimmon ridge is running lots of deals right now. I would hit them up first.

The city probably has a pretty cheap pass that you would pay a surcharge when you played.

Wow... so South Park CC looks like a hell of a deal. That's towards the top of the list now with a few others mentioned on here (Nevel Meade, Chariot Run, ect)

Chariot run looks a little far away for me. 40min each way is tough to do often.

Any other suggestions are welcome!

Little late to this but Nevel and Chariots are always in great shape, both links courses and yes Chariots greens are the best around. Cardinal club is nice, little pricey for guest I think. Pretty sure all three are golf only.

I'm not a fan of Quail Chase but you might like it, be sure to play the East 9 if you go to check it out.

Not sure on price but you can look at Polo Fields, Standard CC, Oxmoor CC and Oldham Co. CC.

IMO Woodhaven isn't a great course and conditions can be so so.

Don't know anything about Wildwood CC.

Oh, I have played South Park CC but it was years ago. It was pretty nice from what I remember. I think they did some work to the course since then and changed/improved the course.

If walking 9 holes 3-4 times a week is what you will be doing most, just join Crescent Hill and then spend your 18 hole course dollars once a week on the variety of "upscale" courses the area has to offer.
Crescent Hill is a nice, nothing fancy, 9 hole course that "The Who's" will look down on, but walking it 9 holes 3-4 times a week will put plenty of "The Who's" money in your pocket during your upscale 18 hole rounds.
Watch out for the guys at CH who are there every day and look like they couldn't walk from the clubhouse to the 1st tee.  They know every blade of grass out there and will empty your wallet faster than you can say Valhalla.

Not sure if they offer the metro parks passes anymore.  I know when I was a junior golfer they were $99 (crazy good deal) and I think the adults were close to $800 for the year.  It gave you access to the 9 or 10 muni's, and Charlie Vettiner is a pretty good track from the tips.  I grew up playing Standard CC and Glen Oaks.  Just played Standard over the Memorial Day holiday, course is shaping up to be in pretty good condition again (I heard they were having membership problems) and I think the rates are pretty cheap now because they are trying to drive up their numbers again.  Glen Oaks I heard was also pretty cheap, no initiation/cheap monthly dues.    Also played Heritage Hills during the holidays, kind of a poke, but I think it is a hidden gem that doesn't see too much play.

But all the other recommendations are pretty solid (maybe not CH, is Dougy still the head pro there?), Nevel is solid, Ted up at Cardinal Club is a good guy.

Also if you don't mind driving across the bridge there are some decent courses in Southern IN.  Hidden Creek has also been in pretty good condition, its a nice little track (and you can hit up the boat while you are over there).
