Has anyone played here? I may be in Clemson in the near future and wonder if this is worth packing the clubs for and dealing with checked baggage.
Also, is it a weather permitting, year 'round course or does it close during the "winter"? I didn't see anything about season schedule on the website.

I haven't actually played it yet. But I know its open year round. And I hear its a really nice course. I am planning to get up there really soon to play it.

I've played many tournaments there and it's o.k. Nothin' to write home about. You would think a school with that good of a golf team and the turf research that is conducted at that school that they would have a kicka$$ course. There are a lot of other courses in this area that are better. IMO!

I've played tournaments there also. It's pretty good. The golf coach there told me when Faxon went to school there, his practice rounds would consist of purposely hitting his approach shots in every greenside bunker. And he would still shoot par. ( I guess that explains allot!!). My recommendations for courses in this area would be Woodfin Ridge in Spartanburg, River Falls in Greer, The Patriot at Grand Harbour in Greenwood ( if you can still get on, awsome Davis Love course!!!), but my #1 pick is about an hour south of Greenville in a town called Hartwell, Ga. The course is called Cateechee!!!!! One of the best semi private courses in this area. Awsome layout, facilities, staff, ect.!!!!!! You won't be disappointed.

Cateechee is a great course for sure. I play there quite often. Its just a little over an hour from me and is very impressive. In the Hartwell area there is another really nice course at Richard B. Russell State Park called Arrowhead Pointe its worth checking out next time you are in that area.

Yes I have played the Furman University course several times. It has been about 17 years since I played there. I was a outside contractor saleman for a Lowe's store in the Greenville area in the mid to late 80's. I saw Lee Trevino give an exhibition there in 87 I think. It was great. I am sure they have changed it. But its well worth the 50 or 60 bucks to play it.

I played at Furman about 2 weeks ago in my company's golf tournament and the greens are in pretty rough shape. Granted it's the winter, but there were some bare spots and other nonsense. That being said, they are closing the course down at some point this summer to redo the greens. They were already cutting down a ton of trees. I also played Cateechee this past fall. I was impressed with it. When I played there they were having green issues as well, but it was a course that seemed pretty recpetive of low scores.

I go to Clemson University and I'd rate the course about 7.5/10. It has some really nice holes but also some straight away boreing ones. It is definately worth a play for it's hilly terrain and signature 17th hole. I played Furman about 3 weeks ago and it is in great shape since the summer long renovation. I would also recommend River Falls, the Gary Player course. All 3 are about $45 and worth a play.
