May 2018 update - Tournament season has started

The season is underway and my first event is in the books. I'm very happy with where my bag is right now, but that doesn't mean I won't be making changes. Over the winter I confirmed my driver is a good fit, went back to my old 3 wood, fixed a shaft issue with my long irons, shored up my wedge situation, and decided upon a putter. The only change currently on the horizon is a potential move to P-730 in the 8-PW, but that's a few weeks off as of right now.

WITBMay2018 - 30.jpg

Driver
TaylorMade 2017 M2 9.5 degree, Graphite Design Tour AD GP-6s (44.75", tipped 0.5"). I drove it great in 2017 with this club (70% FW hit) and had a number of misses in either the first cut or just into the rough. During the winter I again tried a number of shafts (HZRDUS Black, HZRDUS Yellow, HZRDUS T1100, Tensei Orange V2, X-Torsion Copper), but I keep coming back to the GP. I'm excited to try the M3/M4 and see if Twist Face can help me hit 1 or 2 more fairways per round, but I'm perfectly content with the M2 if need be.

3-wood
TaylorMade V-Steel 13 degree, GD Purple Ice 85-X (1.5" tipping). After playing 2017 with an M2 deep face T3 13, I'm back to the venerable V-Steel for now. It's the best combination of tee and turf performance I've ever gotten from a fairway wood. The Purple Ice remains the best fairway wood shaft I've ever used. It's tipped 1.5" because it was originally made with bore thru driver heads in mind, so the tip section is pretty soft.

Utility/Hybrid
TaylorMade Tour Preferred UDI 2 (18), KBS C-Taper lite X. This has become one of my favorite clubs in the bag. A lot of the tournament courses on which I play require precise 230-240 shots off the tee and I don't like hitting hybrid from the teeing ground. Looking forward to demoing the P790 UDI 2, but I don't know if it will be enough to knock the OG UDI out of the bag. Fun fitting note on this one. I originally picked it up with a C-Taper lite in S, but I had a hard time keeping it from going left. My fitter added a few strips of lead tape onto the shaft to see if 5g of extra weight removed the left miss. It worked like a charm, so we replaced the C-Taper lite S (110g) with a C-Taper lite X (115g).

If course setup doesn't indicate a need for the UDI, I'll often replace it with a RBZ Stage 2 Tour 3 hybrid, with Diamana S+ 82HY X. I like the shape of this hybrid more than most on the market, so there's no need to change something that is only in the bag 10% of the time.

WITBMay2018 - 20.jpg WITBMay2018 - 21.jpg WITBMay2018 - 22.jpg WITBMay2018 - 26.jpg WITBMay2018 - 28.jpg WITBMay2018 - 27.jpg WITBMay2018 - 29.jpg

Irons
TaylorMade RSi TP 3-PW. The 3 and 4 irons have KBS C-Taper S, while the 5-PW all have KBS C-Taper S+. The entire set is MOI matched. This is my 4th season with the RSi TP head. The first two were with KBS Tour S, but after an extensive shaft fitting in November 2016, I ended up in an MOI matched build with C-Taper S+ for 2017. New for 2018 are C-Taper S in the 3 and 4 irons because I felt the S+ was just a bit too stiff and I had trouble elevating the longer irons. The S flex has remedied that issue nicely.

Overall I'm happy with the RSi TP, but I'm itching to upgrade soon because I'd like to go back to blades in the short irons. I'm considering the following combo set: P730 8-PW, P750 6 and 7, P770 4 and 5, and a P790 3 iron. I'll likely start with the P730 short irons and decide on the rest as the season progresses.

Wedges
TaylorMade Tour Preferred 52, KBS Tour 610 120S
TaylorMade MG Hi-Toe 60 (bent to 58), DGS400 (tour issue)

I'm back to a 3 wedge system (45-52-58) in 2018 after two seasons with 4 wedges (45-50-54-59). On paper, the gapping with the four wedge system is far superior, but my stats didn't show any noticeable improvement in wedge play with more wedges. Also, to make room for the 4th wedge, I had to remove the 3 iron, but that left a hole near the top of the bag that was exposed on longer par 3s in tournament play. I'm now back to a system I played for a long time.

So far, I'm a big fan of the Hi-Toe. It's versatile and the higher CG makes a noticeable difference when trying to flight down approach shots. The ATV grind was always a favorite of mine (the proto version, without the back flange), so I'm happy to have it again. The Tour Preferred 52 is just an old wedge I had lying around and I like the shape of the head. I'd like to move to a Milled Grind 52, but for now this one will do.

Putter
TaylorMade Itsy Bitsy proto, but not the Jason Day version released in the Vault after his 2015 PGA Championship win. This one is the DJ limited Vault release after he switched to the Spider in Fall 2016. My DJ version sets up slightly different than the JDay version and right now that looks better to my eye and seems to be better for my stroke. 4g weights. Winn standard size grip, not the midsize that comes on the retail Spider Black.

WITBMay2018 - 25.jpg WITBMay2018 - 23.jpg WITBMay2018 - 24.jpg WITBMay2018 - 31.jpg

Ball
TaylorMade TP5x. I played the TP5 in 2017 with fairly good results, but I liked the mid and long iron performance of the TP5x. And the wind performance is second to none. Spring golf is usually quite windy in MN, so I'm giving the TP5x another go. Five rounds into the season, I'm very happy with this ball.

I know you and I have talked about a thousand things, but your set up has never been in question. Extremely well thought out, with a purpose. No better example is the wedges, bent to 53 and 59. Obviously, for a reason. Very nice bag, my friend.

Just posted an update. Yes, bending to 53 and 59 gives me a 6 degree gap since I play a 47 degree PW (47-53-59). My coach as been trying to talk me into a 47-51-55-59 setup and remove the 3-iron (or remove the 4 and bend the 5-iron a tad stronger), but I just haven't been able to get comfortable with that. Can't wait to see what he says when he sees the UDI in the bag. Hahaha

Thanks! I love the ATV protos I was able to acquire because they didn't have the flange sticking out on the back. That said, the new EF wedges are very good. I'll probably be full EF for next season once the grooves on my 54 ATV have lost their magic.

I've tried to give the RBZ fairways a fair shot. I've got a tour issue 14.5 stage 2 proto (slightly smaller head than retail) that I love off the tee and a tour issue 3HL that I love off the deck, but they haven't been a magical "do it all" 3W for me. That damn V-Steel keeps finding its way back into my bag. It's amazing what a little confidence in a club will to for a guy. :)

The face slots work. If you're making contact somewhere near the center of the face, the balls all carry about the distance you're expecting. That was a game changer for me because it allowed me to be a lot more aggressive with my lines. One of my regular playing partners this summer noticed right away how much more consistent my carry distances were.

Fantastic bag! I like the V-steel set up. Tells me that you found what works and tweaked it to perfection.

I'm also playing the RSI TP's after coming from 2005 RAC TP's. I wasn't sure how I would like the transition, but like you I think these are here to stay for a long time.

I've got a gap between my 3W and 4i right now and I have been considering a UDI. Do you play it much from anywhere but the tee box?

Thanks! Those 2005s were so good, but I can't get over how much I like the RSi TPs. I'm sure I'll hit the new PSi Tour at some point, but I can't imagine changing to something else any time soon. Once I find a set of irons, they tend to stay in the bag for a while. I might still be playing the 2005s if not for the groove rule change.

I will use the UDI from the fairway, but even though it's much easier to elevate than an old school 2 iron, it's not something I can plan to stop quickly. I tend to hit it on par 5s where I have room to run the ball up. I also struggle hitting it out of the rough. A hybrid was much better out of the rough for me, so that's something to consider.

Ultimately, I decided to put the UDI into the bag full time because I tend to have more shots each round where I need to hit it 230-240 off the tee than I do 230-240 approach shots.  I will swap them depending on the course I'm playing, but 90+% of the time I have the UDI in the bag.

I really like your setup man, the RSi TP irons and TP EF wedges are awesome products TM put out this year.  I actually really, really like the new wedges... I think they look awesome from address and in the bag.  And of course the Jason Day proto putter is SICK... were you lucky enough to grab one of the 20 from The Vault or did you have to buy it from someone else that got it?  If you got it from The Vault I was wondering if you could customize specs on it or if they all came just as JD uses his...

I have been searching eBay trying to find one and the best I've found is $2500+...

Thanks! I agree it was a good year for TM products. What's funny is that even though I love my EF 60 degree, I just bought a couple more 54 degree ATV proto heads off the TM Vault flash sale site as replacements for my existing 54. That wedge is a perfect fit right now, so I wasn't ready to move into the EF yet.

I was fortunate enough to snag one of the 20 JDay protos from the Vault (I would not be shocked to find out that I was the first one to complete the order process, because I flew through those screens. Hahaha). The putter came with stock specs (34", 70, 2.5) and no options for customization. I play my spiders at 69, 3.0, so after I saw the first one go for so much on eBay, I had to think long and hard about what to do since bending it was almost certain to damage the paint based on pics I'd seen of JDay's gamer. However, in the end I decided that I had purchased the putter with the intent of gaming it, so I stuck to that. Very happy with the decision even if some of my buddies think I'm nuts for not flipping it.

It's so good! I keep getting tempted by other heads, but I always come back to this one. I wish I could find a purple ice shaft to put in my 15 degree head, though. My 13 degree T/S is amazing off the tee and serviceable off the fairway, but there are courses I occasionally play where there are no 3W shots from the tee and par 5s where you need to bring the ball in with a higher trajectory. I think the 15 degree would be great for those courses, but I haven't found a shaft I like.

So jealous of that putter! Really like everything about it. But I would be a dead man if my I brought that one home and my girlfriend found out.

The secret is to have so many putters that they all just blend together and become noise. :)

I'm torn on it so far, to be honest. I expected to love the lack of a sightline, but in practice I think that I was relying on the line of my Spider S to set the putter down in the correct spot. And I think it had a subconscious effect on starting my stroke. Without the line, my putter head is drifting to different spots behind the ball and I have to focus heavily on starting the stroke correctly.

I usually putt with a line on the ball and the first thing I tried was to remove that, but it was a disaster. I put the line back on 3 holes into the round. I love everything about the putter, but I may need a sightline. I don't have any tournament rounds left this year, so I'm going to put a strip of white tape on the head for the rest of the season. If that's a success, I may have to modify the head next year in some fashion to make it legal for play.

Do you think the RSI TP's would be more forgiving than the '08 Tour Preferred Irons?
