Gatorade, Tiger ink $100 million deal

By SCOTT HAMILTON
Senior writer

The world’s top-ranked golfer has struck an endorsement deal with sports drink company Gatorade, according to two sources familiar with the negotiations.

They say the arrangement is a five-year deal that could pay Tiger Woods as much as $100 million. His compensation is based on his endorsement fee and royalties from sales of at least three Gatorade products, including a new proposed drink that will be named after the player.

Gatorade spokesperson Jill Kinney said the company had “nothing to say” regarding the matter, and Woods’ agent, Mark Steinberg of IMG, did not return a phone message and e-mail seeking confirmation.

The two sources and another industry observer said the Gatorade accord was finalized in August. The Gatorade arrangement reportedly trumped a royalty-based bid by Vitamin Water worth up to $75 million. A Vitamin Water spokesperson did not return calls.

A deal with Gatorade replenishes some of the assets recently lost from Woods’ sponsorship portfolio. Earlier this summer Woods parted ways with American Express, ending a 10-year relationship with the credit card company. In addition, long-time sponsor Buick has diminished Woods’ role in promoting the automaker.

Not that such setbacks left Woods wanting. He still has agreements with Nike, Tag Heuer, Accenture and Electronic Arts. And in February he entered into an estimated three-year deal with Gillette that already has featured Woods in its “Gillette Champions” marketing campaign along with Swiss tennis star Roger Federer and French soccer player Thierry Henry.

Pepsi might go up, too, since they own Gatorade. LOL I wonder if that means no more Dasani for Tiger, just AquaFina

Tiger must be pulling in over 200 million a year? Anyone have an idea? I guess that isn't too much when Hedge Fund Mangers are pulling in 1 billion...or were. I think some things have changed in the last few weeks! :)

Look, he was already drinking Gatorade during Wednesday's pro-am! For $100M he better move his hand so the label can be seen!

During a round, I was Mr. Gatorade until I became a diabetic. Maybe he'll get them to develop a sugar-free one that doesn't taste like feet!

I for one am a fan of Gatorade over the other sports drink options--especially powerade. I still primarily drink water, but when choosing a sports drink, it's always Gatorade--now I can get a little Tiger in me ;-)

Well, Gatorade couldn't have landed a better spokesperson than Tiger. Although, it will take a few more sold cases of Gatorade to fund this contract. I am sure they can afford it though.

So much for Tiger saying he was cutting back on his endorsements a little to make time for his course design business.

I think it was definitely a good move by Gatorade. I know I would probably be a little more likely to grab a Gatorade over a Powerade since I now know 'The Man' is drinking the stuff... :superman2:

I beleive that Tigers Buick Contract switched from just buick to all GM. So he is still endorsing buick, just under the GM umbrella. Haven't you seen him in the ON STAR commecials.

I would not be surprised if he ended his relationship with AMEX to do something on the side in finace and or his own credit card!!!! Now that is where the money is!!!

Anyways Tiger is really particular about his image and how he is portrayed. That is why so many companies are willing to pay above and beyond for them. HE IS A SURE THING!!!!

He will always keep winning and be in the spotlight no matter what and he will never be involved in any scandal that would tarnish his reputation or endorsing status and cost comapanies millions!!!

Think of how many sponsors pull contarcts and distance themselves after scandals involving the endorser. they have a sure thing with Tiger and he apeals to everyone on the planet.

just my 2 cents

He made $90 million last year in endorsements and tournament wins. It has been speculated that he will become the first billionaire athlete... this Gatorade endorsement seems to be sealing the deal.

Maybe if this turns out to be successful for Gatorade, Pepsi will go after John Daly, right?

GM has seen its Buick sales chopped in half since 1999. The division, once the top car seller in the U.S., last month reported a 29.5% drop to 16,654 vehicles, less than half the number Hyundai's once lemon-filled lineup sold over the same time frame.

Don't mean to threadjack, but...

I'm Type II. I used to drink 3 or 4 a round. Full of sugar! I now stick to water or mix Crystal Light in 3 or 4 bottles of water and throw them in the bag. I always keep nuts or the emergency Snickers in the bag and glucose tabs.

You should try Propel, the "fitness water" by Gatorade. A heckuva lot less sugar, and IMHO, a lot better taste. I also really like Powerade Option, essentially the same thing.

Personally, in a world where people are starving and are without clothing and shelter, I find it kind of disgusting that this kind of money is being thrown around to one person for nothing but an endorsement...

Hey Gatorade, want to make a real impression? Why don't you give $724 to each of the families of service people serving in Iraq. I'm sure that would help buy a few groceries.

In the meantime I am not going to buy your overpriced sugar water.

although your intentions are good, it's hard to swallow coming from a guy that plays golf (one of the highest priced activities on the face of the planet), not to mention your WITB of premium clubs/shafts. this is just business. treat it as such

Trying to compare my $1,500 expenditure to $100,000,000? You're reaching.

Also, just because something is "business", does not automatically make it moral, ethical or even socially acceptable.

Your post basically says that everyone on this site (who plays golf) is not capable of being a humanitarian. Is that the case?

Heckuva lot less sugar.....but heckuva lot more Aspartame.

Notwithstanding the debate on it's safety....it leaves a horrific after taste in my mouth.

I actually agree sort of.....instead of paying an athlete that is already going to be a billionaire, 100 mil, that cash could be better spent in other ways...why not make some heroes out of people that could use the extra money, like the soldiers in Iraq. I, to be honest, would be more apt to buy a camouflaged Gatorade, Pepsi, or coke or whatever, than just a Gatorade with Tiger on the front.

Not to mention, what is Tiger going to do with that extra cash? Put it in the bank more than likely.....so it is being saved for like 4 generations from now......

There is nothing special about Gatorade anyways. It's just flavored sugar water with a little salt. I can't imagine that it costs a few cents per bottle to make this stuff.

First of all, I friggin LOVE Propel...I drink that stuff more than any other beverage out there! Until I go back to college that is...:P

Secondly, I think Tiger is a perfect fit for Gatorade. They seem to endorse all of the top athletes (Manning, Jeter, etc.), so why not grab the world's most dominant! And thats really cool that they might be giving him his own drink style...although I don't know if i would drink something called Tigerade! lol
