Doaner, gamer anything for me is easy.  It comes down to comfortability.  My gamer putter is my gamer putter based on the fact that I am comfortable with speed with it and alignment.  I had many sets of irons somewhere back on page 250 or so, but at the end of the day, it isn't the feel as to why I play my irons, it is the comfort level in round I have with them.  I loved my vegas, but the 7/8 transition and toe on 3-7 bugged me so much that I sold them.  How do you choose you gamer irons?  You have to hit a green with a 7 iron from middle of the fairway, 5 yards off on right, and 5 yards off on left, 3 shots.  2 need to find the green or let's be super dramatic and say your life is in the line.  Pressure of fake circumstance aside, your gut will want to use one of those 7s more than the other, and that is your gamer.

Big. thats a pretty good way to choose. I'll try that after my next lesson. By that time the ninth will be free and I can shoot darts. The wager will be a weekend of honey do list for each ball not on green at 180 150 125 out.

What do you guys think of the cobra king forged mb?  I loved the feel but couldn't try them with the Nippon pro modus in 120 X.   I know a few people have bought and played them but I am having trouble finding reviews

I have them with modus 120x shafts. Great clubs and pretty small even for a blade.  Black finish holds up well.

How do you guys decide which blades to be gamers?  I am falling deep into MP4 love and going back and forth with the j15mb.

Oh boy.....just went in the garage to bag the staffs for a gambling round tomorrow morning early......look, haven't been playing well, need a change of pace, yatta yatta......l.

I couldn't get myself to bag them.. pulled both 7s, looked at them and they just didn't look right.  Just through my gamerbag in the car.  I hate to not play well when gambling, and despite recent (well, let's call it all summer) woes, I felt worse off with the staffs,  oh boy, this is not what I had in mind with a CB set.....those bb are evil, every toe looks obnoxious once accustomed.  I just need to find a way to bunt it in play off the tee and make some putts.  That is really what it is coming down to these days....these guys are decent but older and play it up, so I may just play a lot of 3 woods and forgo my distance advantage on the group and try to grind out a number.  I know me and know despite how bad it is I will pull it on a few 5s and some 4s, but if I hit 50/50 3 wood and driver, and find lines at green with driver, that is what it will make or break it.

Wtf am I gonna do with this set.......I mean I went to garage beer in hand to load them up, and upon doing so and practice swinging it felt like a down grade on the card so I backed off.

Going to the range today after GD near a month. See if I can remember how to swing. I've got a few sets since the last time I played and actually the last set I used is still in Canada, along with golf shoes I left in the bag. The last time I went back I did the same thing with the shoes. That gets annoying fast.

Anyway taking an iron or two of:

Mizuno MS5, MS11 and Super 11s. Excited to see how all these compare.
Might also take a one MT R58 and maybe a Hogan Redline. I want to slim down the collection a little.... So I can grab another set.

Just love the craftsmanship of the Super11. Hard to find something like that nowadays.

Super 11 is very cool, looks like a rounded toe mp14?

Played better today, but not really.  84 with a snowman on a par 4 and 2 doubles, but I won some skins and cleaned up, so that is always good....

Well I finally took the plunge....

Back in 2005ish is when I last bought some irons and had it narrowed down to the mp30 and mp32s.  I thought I hit them about the same but drank the koolaid and went with the 30s as I figured the CBs would have to be more forgiving; It's just I couldn't tell being a 6ish handicap and I had.no business with blades.

This decision has haunted me for a decade...

Getting back into the game after a 4-5yr hiatus and still playing to around a 6. I hit the ball well but the short game could use some work.

Well I impulsively bought some MP5s because they are drop dead gorgeous and to right my previous wrong!

Hit them a few times and boy do they feel sweet.

Golf's a weird game.

I played my first round in three weeks at the same club I played last time, except last time (July) we played the front white tees, but this time we played the tips. It becomes a otally different course!
In July, my driving was terrible and I shot 85. I've been working on my driving, but it's still not right. Until I stood on the tee today. I have no idea why, but suddenly something clicked, and I was for the most part smacking my driver straight and long. Which was a good thing, because from the back, the course measures 6,744 yards, and that's from the tee boxes to the green edge (except on par threes, which are measured to the middle. Why??). For example, the longest par four measures 468 yards to the edge, then there's an extra 12-20 yards to the centre.
Did I mention it was also raining? Fortunately there was little wind, because that would have made things REALLY tough.

My iron play was dreadful to start with. Hitting them fat or waaaay out of the toe. Then just before the turn I decided to just swing my irons just like I was swinging my driver: freely. That got them working. Don't know why I didn't think of that sooner
A couple of decent 6 irons to reach some long par 4s got my confidence back. Then, on a 167-yard par 3 I hit a beauty of an 8i at the pin which landed about 5ft from the flag, only to spin back to about 10ft away. I made the left to right putt for a birdie, then on the next, a 405 yard par 4 (plus 30 yards to a back pin), I hit a decent drive and left 167 to the pin. 8i on, leaving me with a 10ft left-to-right putt which I make. Do you see a pattern here? :)

I ended up with a 81, which I was pretty pleased with because I started the round with a smooth triple bogey 7. Eleven greens in regulation, 36 putts.

Fairway woods were weird. They were either absolutely magnificent or complete rubbish, with nothing in between. For example, I hit a beautiful 7w from the rough 230 yards around and over a tree to get on a par 5 green in two. Carried it all the way. Unfortunately, it was a provisional, because my first attempt was last seen heading OoB (turns out it was OK, and I made par). On another par five, I hit a 4w 240 yards in to raised green that was right at the flag. Unfortunately, it hit the slope in front of the green which took the bite off it, and it didn't roll out to the pin (260 yards) at the back like I wanted, but, hey, I'm on in two. Smooth 3-putt for a par...
Final par 5, I have 260 to the pin, 240 to the green, so I decide to go for it with the 4w. And send it waaaay right into the trees from where I end up making a double. Need to work on my fairway woods a bit.

Putting was a bit iffy. Not many single putts, but not that many great chances either due to being too cautious with my chipping. I never really got the speed of the greens and left a lot of long putts either woefully short or smacked them 6ft past the hole. I generally made the ones coming back, though, which was something. I had two 3-putts, but it could have been a lot more.

Shot of the day for me, though, was with my Honma driving iron. Par three, 216 to the pin, bit of a breeze against (not really that much). I grip down and sort of hit a low punch, which lands on the front of the green and rolls out to pin high, with a good birdie chance from about 20ft...and I ended up having to make a 6-footer for par.

Playing a fairly long course from the back tees for the first time really brought home to me how good the pros are. There's so little room for error off the tee.

Sorry for the long-winded post.

^^^ Despite some struggles there NoCatchy it does sound like there are a lot of positives to take away from that round, especially playing in the wind! Liking that the driver is working, and the flag hunting! Those 36 putt's though... It's nice to change it up every now and then and play from the tips, just to see what these pro's have to deal with, then you just imagine playing with tucked pins and lightning greens and you really appreciate just how good these guys are.

I had a good round going on Saturday, out in 32 (3 under) and then there was a colossal choke which would have made the *Proteas (our National cricket side) proud, came back in 39 (4 over) for a less than stellar 71... no excuse, I hadn't been in that position for awhile and then suddenly on 16 I thought about it, ended up doubling 16 and dropping 17 (par 5) which is just a no no. It happens!

*The Proteas lately have been known to be utterly useless every time they play, they show a glimmer of form and then manage to choke and throw it away, really they have no BMT at the moment.

"A less than stellar 71"....I'd be pretty pleased with that, Jonesy, but I imagine that after being 3-under at the turn, your expectations change. A lot. I've never been in that position.

I was looking back over my round just now. On the front nine, most of my dropped shots were due to bad iron play. On the back nine, with the exception of one three-putt, they were all down to dreadful fairway wood shots, either from the tee or off the deck. I need to work on that.

More than my putting, it was my shots around the green that were a problem. I just wasn't aggressive enough on my chips. The greens were soft, and you hit the ball near the hole and stop it. The last time I played, three weeks ago on the same course, the greens were hard and firm, and the ball ran out a lot. I didn't get used to the change quickly enough.

But overall, I was pretty pleased with my score: 42 and 39 for a nine-over 81 from the tips. After my triple-bogey start, I was expecting much worse.

As for the SA cricket team....well I hoped they enjoyed their stay in England :D

The Super 11 is very similar to the MS-11. Both are sweet. The finish of the Super is a little nicer and the toe is a little more angular, especially comparing the short irons. But, I haven't been able to hit them head to head. Still recovering from the nose surgery.

They look really smart. I like the finish on them.
When you posted that you had bought a set, I had a look online at pictures for them, and then went straight to Yahoo! Auc to see if there were any sets on sale. Then I remembered that I have 6 or 7 sets, and nowhere to hide a new one....

Hope the recovery is going well. September/October is one of the best times for golf in Japan, so I hope you're ready to play by then.

Was feeling pretty great this morning, but after going back to the doctor for post-op check up and 'sinus cleaning.' I was done. 'Sinus cleaning,' sounds innocuous enough, but in reality it is torture. I am guessing it must have been between 15 and 20 minutes of hell, akin to the movie torture scene in A Clockwork Orange.

There's not much you can do in the chair with the nose doctor stuffing gauze and random metal implements up the labyrinthine path ways of your nose holes. I tried pinching my arms and then legs. I tried to mentally reduce tension, only to be jerked into reality, by the scraping of metal on bone and the digging down narrow nooks that are like the sensory core of your face. At one point there was a camera up behind my eye and I swear I could sense the light coming through behind my eye. And then finally I retreated into my mind imagining puring bladed one-irons. I imagined pulling the Limited Seve Dunlop 804/999, that sits in my spare bag in the corner, and just lacing ball after ball.

When the doctor, a young lithe lady finally said, uwatta, I was literally shaking. On one hand, the recovery is going well and I can breath far easier and my sense of smell has increased dramatically, but on the other, I can't know what fresh new pain awaits next Monday.

Under the category "it had to happen sooner or later..." I took a lesson because things were heading south and it was bang on. But implementing changes isn't easy. The result: can't hit the sweet small blades worth a damn. Alternate misses: fat, shank, thin, toe. I haven't felt the sweet spot in days.

So what's a ho to do?

Ha! When I sold everything I fudged a little and kept the Mac vfoils - I have both the blades and cb. Took the blades out to the range and they worked. So the small blades are getting a little time to sit idle. I won't play them until they call me.

Quick aside about yesterday.

Since we have so many Japan inhabitants in this thread, and we like our Japanese clubs, just wanted to say I am bummed hideki didn't get it done.  I think as much as Japan loves the sport, they as a nation deserve a major champion.  I think he will, but I also think he Carries that heavy burden in these things....

Recent blade convert here.  Playing mp4's 6-pw.  Played in a local club tourney yesterday.  Only 3rd time out with the blades.  Final hole, long par 5 into a stiff wind.  Third shot, 7 iron, aimed 20 feet right and played a smooth draw back toward the pin into the wind.  Executed very nice.  15 foot birdie putt.  Made the putt, finished with birdie.

The blades are staying in the bag.  Golf if fun when you're working the ball both ways!

Yeah agree.........he might have done it if he was paired in last group. JT holing with chip and the pregnant pause of the ball dropping for birdie loosened him up quite a bit. Did not loosen Hideki one iota.

Real nice job by PGA on the setup of course and great alterations by club. Good event.

No, C_T_S, to me "Sinus Cleaning" sounds exactly like you described :shok: You had me at "the scraping of metal on bone". How many more times do have to go for it?

I think he'll get it done, and yesterday Sunday's experience will help him. I don't think he's ever really been in contention in the final round of a major; normally, he shoots a really good final round to move up the leaderboard into the top 5, so this year's PGA was most likely a new experience for him.
He was really upset after the round. One interviewer asked him what he thought was lacking in his game (pretty brutal question, I thought), and he just said "I'll think about it" and walked off. In another interview, he had tears in his eyes. He was not a happy camper.

Adding a non-major themed post...

I've been curious what would happen if I brought out a steel shafted blade set, having been playing my graphite shafted Rams for a while now.  Took the Ram FX Nickels, which have DGS300.

It was moderately interesting.  I noticed the extra weight right away.  Hit them decently, but not as well as my graphite set, possibly due to having to adjust to the heavier weight again.  Wasn't able to get anything going in terms of scoring, wound up with a decidedly mediocre 84.

Played again Sunday, and dragged along my graphite shafted Rams this time.  Found it interesting that my ballstriking improved immediately.  Again, likely due to the familiarity from having been playing them for a couple months or so.  And I three putted the last hole for a 76.

Funny how that is.

Disclaimer:  I do not believe the difference in the scores for these two rounds was particularly attributable to my having switched to steel and back again.  My tee game in the steel shafted round was not insignificantly better in the graphite round than it was during the steel round.  I had to punch out two or three times in the latter.  Makes a difference.

Got to watch pretty well the entire final 36 and I have to say, it looked like he ran out of steam. Surprisingly It was his ball striking that wasn't all there. He short sided himself too many times and put to much pressure on the weak part of his game. And, Thomas got it up and in from just about everywhere. 16 was a total killer. After that two shot swing I thought to turn off the tube. Kudos to Thomas, he's had Matsuyama's number all year. If not for him it would be one of the biggest season's in golf history.

I have to think Hideki is the best player in the world without a major and that title doesn't usually last long, outside of a few, like Monty and Westwood. If you look at his record this year and last in the majors, it's just steady progress. And, it looks like he has the potential to win on just about any course, though I don't think he's all that great in the wind. Still, at the US Open he had the low round two of the four days. I think it's just a matter of time, erasing the one or two errors he does make. That's all it is for him, turning one 72 or 3 into a 70.

There are a ton of great players out there right now that can win any week and he's right up there as consistent as anyone.

This little guy was stellar from 110 and in, especially around the greens.

The PGA is my favorite major not named the Open Championship and the Masters.  :)

My golf viewing kinda ends with the Women's Open Championship and the 6 week stretch of links. I tried to watch a couple hours on Saturday, but super fast huge greens? Seemed the US PGA wanted to secure their seat at the big boys table and show they can play tough too. 3 groups stacked up on a par 3? I don't want to experience that in person, less so on the tele ;)

Swung a club and played a round for the first time in 10 weeks. I maybe shouldn't have taken the 714 MBs with me, that I'd never used before.
One of the guys I was playing with actually commented - so you play blades - I thought you gotta be kidding? Are you on WRX? LOL. As I hacked it about the place. I said, well I have 6 sets, and I kind of rushed out the door after 5 hours sleep without checking what was in the bag.

The 714s sure frame the ball in a lovely way and I really like the satin finish, but definitely need to get some reps in before anything like a good swing/results will return.
