Ultima and Thule. On January 1st, the New Horizons probe encountered the Kuiper Belt object Ultimate Thule at a distance of 6.5 billion km from the sun, the most distant object every visited by a spacecraft. The image revealed that the object was a binary contact, or two spherical objects held together by mutual gravity. The larger object, Ultima, is ~19 km in diameter. The smaller object, Thule, is ~14 km in diameter.

A streak of mostly hydrogen extends ~200,000 light-years from spiral galaxy D100. The tail contains ~400,000 times the mass of our sun. As the galaxy passes through the gas cloud in the surrounding Coma Cluster, the outer gas is stripped away, leaving the narrow central tail.

A cosmic bubble, Sharpless 2-308, lies ~5,200 light years away. The nebula is ~60 light-years wide, and is estimated to be ~70,000 years old.

LDN 1622: The Dark Nebula in Orion (aka The Boogeyman Nebula). The dark nebula, an interstellar cloud of dust particles coated with frozen carbon monoxide and nitrogen that is so dense that it blocks the light from the objects behind it, sits ~500 light-years away.

The Milky Way is generally thought to be a flat, spiral galaxy. However, a recent mapping of 1,339 Cepheid variable stars, a type of pulsating star whose distance can be accurately measured, shows our galaxy warping at the edges. The mapping was produced by a joint team from the Macquarie University in Australia, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
