The first photo from NASA's InSight lander on the surface of Mars. The horizon is on the upper 1/4 of the photo, and the fisheye camera lens is obviously covered in dust kicked up during the landing.

A little better.

You know what I would REALLY like to see?  Video of the lander's approach/descent.  There is a great video on YouTube of a shuttle launch with cameras hooked to the SRBs, and it shows the separation and descent back into the ocean.  It's awesome.

IC 1871, the Soul Nebula, is ~25 light-years across, and ~6,500 light-years from Earth.

The Fairy of Eagle Nebula (M16). One of several striking dust pillars in the Eagle Nebula, the fairy is ten light-years tall.

NASA's OSIRIS-REx spacecraft arrived at the asteroid Bennu today. Launched in September 2016, the spacecraft will eventually take a ~2 kg sample of the asteroid, and return it to Earth. It's currently in a 7 km high orbit around the asteroid, which itself is quite a feat given the low gravity environment of this 1600 ft wide hunk of rock and metal.

I can never get bored looking at pics of the Andromeda galaxy. Andromeda (M31) is located 2.5 million light-years from Earth, and is our nearest spiral galaxy neighbor.

A digital stack of 240 images taken over a period of 1.5 hours from the Everest Base Camp captures the north face of the mountain, and the colorful star trails. Blueish trails are hotter stars, and yellow/red trails are stars cooler than the Sun.

Phobos, one of Mars' twin moons. It's only 25 km across, and orbits at ~5,800 km, compared to 400,000 km for out Moon. Phobos is believed to be a captured asteroid. It's so close that it's being dragged down by tidal forces, and will break up in orbit and crash down on to the Martian surface in ~50 million years.

On this day twenty years ago space shuttle Mission STS-88 connected the Unity node to the Russian Zarya module, marking the start of construction of the International Space Station. My how time flies.

The large spiral galaxy NGC 1055 (top left), and the spiral galaxy M77 (bottom right). Both are 100,000 light-years across, and members of a galaxy group ~60 million light-years away. The two are ~500,000 light years apart, or 20% of the distance from the Milky Way to our nearest galactic neighbor Andromeda. The image, taken on November 28th, contains a clear view of the newly discovered supernova SN2018ivc in an arm of M77.

Spiral galaxy Arp 188, the Tadpole Galaxy, located 420 million light-years away, features a 280,000 light-year long tail. It's believed that a compact galaxy crossed in front of the Tadpole (from right to left), and the tidal forces drew out the galaxy's stars, gas, and dust.

A nebula surrounds the binary star system R Aquarii. Located 700 light-years away, the pair consist of a red giant star that is losing material to its companion star, a hot white dwarf.
