Just for fun I bought on eBay a Cobra Ultramid driver, 43" with a True Temper Dynamic Gold S300 shaft.  I remember that when John Daly won the 1991 PGA Championship at Crooked Stick, he used this driver, but with a Saandvik titanium shaft.  I remember seeing in the golf magazines the ad used to promote the driver, something like a smoking gun pointed at the driver face; of course, the head is made of bulletproof plastic.

When the club arrived the first thing I noticed was the cosmetics.  Quite frankly, it's ugly.  That buttermilk finish simply doesn't jive with the eye.  However, my first strike with it felt almost exactly like my Hogan Apex persimmon driver.  The sound is certainly a bit different compared to persimmon, but the ball flight I do like.  Admittedly, I think I hit better shots with this driver than my Apex, but I wonder if people share my sentiment that this wonderful driver was not popular in many bags due to the lack of cosmetics.

For now, I am using this driver as my practice range driver.  I feel that the bulletproof plastic must be tough enough to withstand the hardest rangeballs, and given Daly swung it very hard there is no way I can damage the head.

Have any of you guys tried the Ultramid driver, and if you did, why is it not in your retro bag?

I had a couple of these... One with a steel shaft and one that I reshafted with an ei-70 (quality graphite shaft back in the day)... Unfortunately I never came across one with the titanium shaft.

As much as I wanted to like it, I could never hit the thing straight worth a darn.  Plus, I hit it really low, almost like someone who had never hit a persimmon before -- only I played persimmons exclusively back then.  It was almost like the club had no loft on it or something.

Anyway, the best thing about it IMO was that it was indestructible, unlike persimmons.  In those days (early 90s), range balls were horrible Top Flite or similar rocks, and I couldn't practice with my persimmmons because it would destroy them.  Of course, I hit the Ultramid so poorly, it wasn't worth practicing with, either. :)

Still a cool club though!

Weren't the heads made from Kevlar?  I remember the first one I saw was at a local qualifier for what was then the Chrysler National Long Drive Competition in the early 1990's.  There was a guy who won that local qualifier with the Cobra kevlar head and titanium shaft.

A couple months ago, I bought a Kevlar driver at a yard sale for a dollar.  I started a thread on it, to see if anyone was familiar with it.  Mine was a clone, not a Cobra, from what information I could get.  My driver was an golden yellow color with no insert, no soleplate.  I recall an old guy had one back in the 1990's, it was white.

I hit it a few times, can't say it excited me.  I have never seen another, except for the older fellow's.  His was standard size, the one I have is much bigger, about the size of a GBB.

It looks indestructible.

PS:  Just looked up one on Ebay.  It's the exact driver I have, a Kevlar full body model.  The person listing it says it's a Taylormade, and includes a Taylormade head cover with it.  I doubt it's a Taylor.  He/she has a starting bid of $75, (no bids) and a buy it now at $175.

Can't see anybody paying that much.

boy, oh boy, John Daly could smoke his Cobra back in the day.....I guess "smoking it" would a bad choice when referring to Mr. Daly.  Perhaps you could melt it down. Pull it into one long strand and then knit yourself a bullet-proof vest.

Yikes!  That second slick scared me spitless into buying the wood Tim!

Funny this discussion popped up, as I am currently gaming my Maxfli Carbon Graphite woods right now - likely a predecessor of this bad boy.  Only had them out for 27 holes so far, but the durability factor is pretty good IMHO.

I'm a bit like EP - the head feels very persimmony, though a slight bit more "dead" - it's even quieter than persimmon.  My only challenge I have with mine is the very whippy shaft, though results so far have been rather promising.

Incidentally, since the thread was bumped, here's John Daly's actual Cobra driver from that win for sale, currently the bid is at $4176

Kinda crazy. Just looked on eBay. There's a couple for sale. Can't imagine trying to hit this with JD's 6.5* of loft. Every drive would be 10 feet off the ground.

Friend bought a driver with the Sandvik titanium shaft. He could rip it but no idea where it was going. Head looked cheap. I could never get it airborne. He swapped it for a Joe Powell DSP...

The shaft should have a little paint worn off the shaft where it contacts the bag divider.  I remember watching Daly use it on the 72nd hole of the tournament and the first thing I noticed as he was addressing the ball was the silver dot on the shaft (i.e., absence of paint) due to the shaft rubbing on the top of John's Ping bag divider.

Here are links to the YouTube videos of the marvelous tournament.  You can see the silver dot on his shaft on the final hole.

The auction will be fun to watch, and the winning bid will be double what it is now.  We'll see.

I do know that the standard loft is 10.5, and I have one here with me.  The face angle appears to be zero, which I like.

I had one and played it exclusively for about a year back when they were popular.  I remember liking the sound and the feel of it. I don't know what ever happened to it but I would love to run across another one somewhere and put it in the collection of memories.

Does anyone know if these can be refinished and if so, who can do it?
