I'll be in LA for business next week, and have been asked to get us a tee time at a course near Thousand Oaks one day, then El Segundo the next.

Given that we're playing Torrey Pines the first day of our trip, I'd like these to be a bit more affordable So, nice munis are just fine, but I don't need a $150 teetime. also, my playing partner is in his first year and is still struggling, so something that would still be fun for him would be nice.

Suggestions?

I live in Thousand Oaks, so I can offer some suggestions:

Rustic Canyon - Beautiful links style course. Feels like you're in the middle of nowhere.

Sterling Hills - technically Camarillo but a very nice course that is well maintained.

Los Robles Greens - The only muni in T.O. Just changed over to Eagle Golf management and is in a lot better shape than in the past.

Tierra Rejada - 15 min north of T.O. Nice, but more expensive

Moorpark CC - farther away and more expensive still, but 27 holes to choose from and in great shape

River Ridge used to be where the Dallas Cowboys had summer camp. Gets windy on the back 9.

The Los Verdes Golf Course in Rancho Palos Verdes is just south of El Segundo and is nice and overlooks the Pacific Ocean. It's super hard to book a weekend tee time though so I hope you can play on a weekday. It’s a super low-priced course though with one of the best muni locations in So. Cal.

There's a nice 9 hole executive course called The Lakes at El Segundo that's fun to play and cheap ($11-$15, I think). It's a par 29 course and you can pretty much walk on any time. It's a nice fun course for beginners and won't break the bank. It's located just a few miles south of LAX.

I'd second Rustic Canyon. Green fees are cheap ($39 if I remember right) and its a great layout. It can get tough if the wind picks up though.

Lost Canyons is by Thousand Oaks. A little pricey but nothing crazy. Maybe 100 dollers but i doubt it. It a great track and is a peter dye design. Great course. David Pelz used to hold lessons there.

There is also the Rancho Park muni in west LA. I used to play there a lot when I lived in Culver City. It is often crowded but a very nice course that is cheap to play.

All I can say is wow. We played Los Verdes yesterday, and Rustic Canyon today. Major thanks for recommending them, as both courses were great. Rustic Canyon was a nicer track coursewise and condition, but Los Verdes was really b eautiful being on the peninsula. My coworker was really happy I got us tee times on them.
