I have a Mizuno MP-001 and have broken two shafts in the last month and a half  . Both broke in the same spot, inside the hozel. It looks like somebody took a pair of vise grips and twisted the shaft into two pieces. It is not a clean break, but the frayed area is only about 1/4 inch on either side of the break. The first was the stock shaft and the second was a Fuji E360. Does anyone have any ideas as to what would be causing this to happen?

are you using a head cover, sounds like an abuse thing breaking there they usually break farther up the shaft.

I use a headcover and take care of the club. I don't throw it, pound it on the ground, etc. The Fuji has a lifetime warranty, so I am getting it replaced. I am just trying to figure out why it is breaking.

3 things come to mind. --

1. Lots of heel shots or fat shots with it.
2. bad or improperly installed shaft, or most likely
3. improperly prepared hosel before installing shaft.

I will have to put some tape on it to check impact. It doesn't feel like I am hitting them off the heel, but I could be. I know I am not hitting it fat. The hosel makes sense, but I have never had a problem with the shop I take my clubs to before. I ask him to double check the hosel for me.

Thanks for the response.

Improperly coned hosels are a huge factor in shaft breakage.

Take a 20 degree coning tool to the hosel and be sure it's well relieved.

Too much epoxy used. Epoxy gets too high up the shaft and prevents the shaft from flexing properly. Essentially it makes the shaft more rigid and it will snap instead of bend.

Never heard of that one before, given that the epoxy has a pretty good shear strength, it has a bit of give in it, so i don't think that'd be the case. Not to mention you'd need alot of extra glue for that!

Epoxy plugs up over the top of the hosel can indeed influence breakage - however improperly coned hosels are a much larger issue.

I've had R7 heads in here for reshafts that had absolutely no hosel coning and literally cut through the shaft with every swing.

Just a missing step in an assembly-line club - that's all.

Absolutely this could be the reason, but not properly preparing the hosel is more likely.
