Hi! Nice to meet a fellow SA'can. Your opinion... currently still playing my Mizuno Pro II's.... I know I know old but just can't bring myself to changing! However I have been eyeing the Callaway X Forged quite amorously for while now. I play the Links occassionally (live in Cape Town) so hope you enjoyed "our" Cape course!! hehehehehehe

But I digress; you sound thrilled with the Cally X Forged irons together with the Project X 6.0's & that is making me even more interested. How would you compare the performance and feel of this set up with the Mizuno Pro II's? Also you pick these up from The Pro Shop?

Playing Milnerton tomorrow.... currently typically Cape Town weather... rain and wind; should be a blast!!

Peter

I had my heart set on a set of I-10's when I went into my golf shop, but told myself to try everything just to be sure.  I kept coming back to the X Forged.  The shop had a used set and let me hit the 3-P, and I fell in love.  Took a week to come in but wort the wait.  My distances are a little bit shorter, but who cares when the GIR numbers go up.  I love these clubs.

Had these clubs now since june so about 4 and a bit months, played quite a lot of summer golf with them and a fair bit of winter golf here in england. I've got the project x flighted shaft 6.0 in them. The clubs are fantastic to play with, the shape and size at address is just beautifull and they sit so well behind the ball. The most impressive thing about these clubs is the accuracy, the 8,9 and pw are like laser guided or something i've never known such accuracy before, the ball flight took a little getting used too but i'm getting better with it now, the short irons were quite high and didn't seem penetrating at all, it took a bit of work down the range but its sorted now, i get a high piercing flight that flatens out at the top and carries on before landing ridicuously soft. I've read here and on other forumns about how easy the 3 and 4 irons are to hit, let me tell you its all true they are so easy to launch away and the 3 iron has to be the best feeling club ever, i find myself using it off the tee far more than i've ever used a 3 iron before. All in all i have to say they are the best irons i've ever hit feel is amazing, i tried several different sets before seting on these clubs, had originally set my heart on some taylormade r7 tp's but after trying them the mizuno mp52's and 62's, some titleist ap2's and the taylormade tp forged i wasn't amazed by any of them they were no better than my current set, the guy at the store told me to try the callaways but i didn't know at the time that they'd released a better plays club, thought all they did was those big chunky things, anyway first shot with the six iron was perfect...i kept trying them out over the next few weeks along with some other clubs just to be sure. As you can see the x forged ended up in my bag and i'm one happy golfer. One word of advice though is be carefull with the project x shaft, it plays a good bit stiffer than it should for a 6.0 its more of an in between stiff and extra stiff so feel and loading the shaft takes some getting used too but that could just be me...one thing i will also add is the fighted shafts really do change trajectory through the set.

I just demoed these clubs at Dick's the other day with the stock 6.0  project X flighted shafts. I also demoed cleveland cg tour reds and  taylor made tour preferred irons, both with dynamic gold s300 shafts.  The shafts in all 3 irons were too weak for me, which is the main  problem that i have with my current clubs. As a result, normal shots with all 3 clubs started off just to the left of my target line, which again is a problem that I struggle with on all of my clubs. I averaged a total of 102 mph swingspeed with all 3 clubs. I carried on average 187-192 with the cg red, 194-197 with the x-forged, and 202-207 with the tour preferred on normal swings, considering I've only touched a golf club twice since August. The x-forged performed very well. Mid-high initial launch with consistent distance and flight characteristics, the most consistent of all the clubs. It was very easy to work the ball both left and right. However, I did have difficulties with working the ball high and low. I believe that this was mainly due to the flighted shaft. On normal swings, the ball consistently ballooned on me which was not a problem with either the cg reds or the tour preferred, both of which are more cavity backed then the x forged!!! Nevertheless, the feeling and feedback of these irons was awesome. I wouldn't quite say they're on the same level as Mizuno forgings, but they're up there. They felt exactly what you would expect from a forged head with project x shafts, a little muted on all shots both on and off the sweet spot. Overall I'd rate these irons a 4/5 with the set up provided at Dick's. I'd give the head of the irons a 4.5/5 and I believe that if I were to hit them with 6.5 project X non-flighted shafts or dynamic gold x100's then they would be a 5/5. Great feel and feedback, easy to work both left and right, and very consistent, what else could you ask for?

I've had these over a year. They do feel sweet and looks great. Only thing was that I couldn't hit a fade with these. 3,4,5 left my bag for 4 months and stayed in the light bag to goto the range. After enough practice I got them to do high fade. I really don't know what I'm doing here but seems little hard to work compared to my older CB or blades (Fusion, TM OS, X-Tour, Old Cobra CB). I would recommend high-mid HC who wants to get better because of the price drop coming within next three months or so. They are going to my friend who is 18 HC who seems to fell in love with the feel.

Distance: Shorter than X-tour but seems not to have the Bomb that I had with X-tour. Consistent, which is great!!
Flight: Mid to High, 8 iron gets too high for my taste.
Spin: Can spin these on short iron pretty easy.
Control: Seems to want to go right on 3-4-5. Took out 3. (I did adjust the lie 2 flat: I'm 5'7")
Looks: Looks very nice, lot better than X-tour.
Overall: If I paid what it cost now, I would be happy but I didn't.

Now I am off to the adventure of finding a new set cuz my buddy's bothering me.

Replaced my 704 CB's with these and can honestly say that whilst there is no change in distance or (imho) workability, these irons have to be one of the most beautiful, playable golf clubs i've ever used.

I was a little worried about going over to these as i personally thought the heads looked a little small and that i'd stuggle finding the sweetspot.  Upon delivery however, and upon comparison with the 704's i think it's just an optical illusion.  They still look small standing over them  but they are definitely of similar size.

Being a low hitter i decided  to go for the 5.0 Project X to help me get launch. (I'll admit here that this was a gamble when you consider how much you are outlaying and i wasn't sure it would work!)  This choice turned out to be perfect for me and the launch is perfect with no hint of anything turning right.  I have a driver SS of 105 and i would describe the shaft as more than acceptable for players upto this speed.

I will not even try to describe feel, as it is just the most perfect feeling in any golf club, PERIOD.

There are plenty of deals to be had on these at the minute with the 09 version coming out, and i got mine at $700 US from a website that does "open box" clubs.  ( I won't mention their name here as they don't sponsor Golfwrx)

Final Word: Brilliant

Ive had these clubs for about a yr. and half and their beyond perfect.

Now for the problem:

Callaway made a new set of these calling them the "2009 x-forged II"
I really dont see any difference or reason to drop these irons for the new ones, but i want to hear what you guys think of the x-forged vs. x-forged II

The difference between the x forged (07) and the x forged (09) is the grind and toe to heel length, the grind on the 09's fit me much better, I sold my x forged and replaced with mp 62's but am already looking for the 09 x forged. The grind on the 62's is much better than the 07 x forged but more offset than I like to look at so going to sell these (mp 62) and get a set of the 09 x forged.

Funny, I was also looking at the mp-62 irons as well.

I was at the driving range/pro shop this morning testing my x-forged(07) to the (09) x-forged and the mizuno mp-62 irons.  All PX 6.5 shafts.

6 Iron:
(07) x-forged= 175-182
(09)x-forged=  170-176
mp-62=          165-173

Overall the 07 (which im using now felt the best) more distance and better ball flight.

I guess if it isn't broke don't fix it.

Interesting, could you give a little more detailed comparison and breakdown. I am in the hunt for a new set of irons and have hit the '07 x forged and mp 62. I really liked the 62s, feel, workability, consitency, etc. But I hit the '07 x forged with a px 6.0 flighted which is far from being the correct shat for me. 6 iron ss is approx 98-100. With the '07s I was consistently in the mid 190s for carry but the ballflight had a major balloon and that px still felt a little boardy. The 62s went consistently 200-205 carry with not balloon, DG S300's. Again the shaft was too weak, but the overall feel and ball flight were much better. All shafts being equal, I would just like a detailed review and comparison between the three since I'm going to the launch monitor on all 3 real soon. Thanks.

You really need to look at the specs, there is a lot of difference between the clubs, I played the x forged for about two years and loved them, need a little different grind and the 09 x forged gives me that, take a look at the bounce and grind and total length of the head and I think you will see a big difference. take care!

Love the X Forged irons. I have Project X 6.0 shafts in mine (lefty) and they're soft and workable.

I've been playing these for a while and overall they're great irons.  There is just better out there with more forgiveness without sacrificing playability.

:stop: ... there's a big difference between 07 and 09 heads even though they have the same shafts.

I love 07's because they are blade like, not to forgiving and head design attributes are more suited for sweepers like myself.  X-Forged 09's are for diggers, more bounce in shorter clubs plus deeper CB so they are more forgiving. :not_i: I was disappointed to see 09 changes even though the head looks clean.

I have the 07 models with X100 shafts and they are long, forgiving and lovely to look at much better than the MP-67's i swapped from they had 5.5 Project X's and were useless TT are the best shafts out there for clubs like this in my opinion.
Thats why Tiger uses them not Royal Precisions offerings
These irons feel as good as any forged set and i have used Titleist, 2 sets of Mizuno and Taylormade but these are by far the nicest

The 2007 X-Forged irons are simply the finest irons I have ever had the pleasure of hitting/owning.  If you have not had the opportunity to hit these irons, and you are a fan of the forged iron feel, you really should give these a try.  I love Mizuno and Titleist forged irons.  I have historically preferred Mizuno forged irons to other manufacturers (disclaimer:  I have not had the opportunity to hit some of the more "exotic" forged irons, such as Miura or Scratch).

I had it narrowed down to the X-forged and MP-60 or MP-52's.  For me, after hitting them, the X-forged were the clear winner.  This is not a slam on the Mizuno's.  I would happily own either of the Mizuno models and they are deserving of all of the praise they receive.  Having said that, the choice was not difficult for me.  The X-forged simply felt and worked better for me.  The feel is outstanding and the Endo forging quality is evident from the first hit.

I am "picker" with my irons, not a digger.  I absolutely love the sole and leading edge on these.  The weighting/balance of these clubs just feels terrific.  I have the Project X 6.0 flighted shafts in mine and have not him them with any other shafts, but I love the combo and don't feel any urge to experiment with other shafts.  I have heard some comment that the Project X flighted is a "boardy" or harsh shaft, but I would not agree with this assessment- in no way shape or form are these shafts harsh or boardy.  YMMV.

In short, I will admit to being a complete ho when it comes to golf gear.  I am always experimenting/buying/selling.  The X-forged are so good, I am no longer tempted to try other irons.  I am completely satisfied.

Just got these with the black gold shaft option. Had been using Mizuno mp-32's up to this point (about 8 months). I think these compare pretty well. On center hits, the sound is a little different - maybe less muted with more of a "thwack". In terms of feel, these are tremendous. You can identify immediately whether you've pured a shot or not.

I haven't yet had the problem with digging that many people describe, although I usually don't take deep divots. Workability is also very similar to the mizunos, easy to bend shots left or right.

One other thing to note is that if I'm not swinging very well, I'll tend to miss towards the toe. With the mizunos, the penalty on distance was a full club while these seem to be about half of that on my worst swings.

This is a solid set of irons and I think one that would serve any golfer very well. As always, the proper shaft is the key.

Although I dont play this set anymore, I will never get rid of mine.  I always go back to them when my current setup is acting up.  The feel is great and they are so good looking-much better than the 09 version.  I rawed my set and removed the badges and they look even better.
