<p><img width="73" height="104" align="right" alt="" src="http://www.golfwrx.com/BagChatter/wp-content/uploads/gary player.jpg" /><strong>Gary Player laid a broadside across the stern of the PGA Tour Wednesday at The Open Championship, stating that one player told him of drug use while on tour. "I took an oath prior to him telling me -- I won't tell you where -- but he told me what he did, and I could see this massive change in him," Player said. "And somebody else told me something, that I also promised I wouldn't tell, that verified others had done it." </strong></p>
<p>I find it interesting that Player won't reveal who this individual with the "massive change" is, and I'm rumaging my memory (an unreliable storage facility at best, at worst well, I'm afraid to go there) and can't think of any physique owned by a world class golfer that has undergone a Pudge Rodriguez or Jason Giambi type change from normal sized into Raging Roid Man. Not a one, nada, zilch. </p>
<p>Does that mean that Mr. Player has sucked one too many protein shakes and his brain has shriveled to the size of a steroidized testicle? No, no I don't think that's the case at all because if it were then he wouldn't be capable of drawing breath without assistance. I believe somewhere in the golf world there is indeed someone using real performance enhancing drugs, the odds are better than the 67% pay out on Indian Casino slot machines. But what in the world is Mr. Player trying to prove with this outburst? Why would he say this at this particular time and place? Retief Goosen, after posting a 70 which left him among the early leaders, confessed that he was "very shocked" by the old champion's comments. "I don't know what Gary was trying to prove, saying what he said," Goosen said. "I don't know if he is trying to damage golf."</p>
<p>Perhaps this is the kick in the behind Tim Finchem needs to get some kind of testing thing done for the PGA, but if that's the motivation why do it before a non PGA event? Surely Mr. Player has traveled enough miles to recognize the difference between Scotland and Scottsdale. Is it to get the European Tour to do testing? They are already beginning that at the start of next year. Besides they already test at the French Open and no one's been outed. The Royal & Ancient Golf Club's Peter Dawson was asked if he was concerned that The Open winner might be using steroids. "I don't know if Gary Player is right about golfers being on drugs, frankly, so I really can't comment," Dawson said. "One thing I do know is that we're not drug testing here at the Open championship this week, so just how that would be identified, I'm not sure." A nice way of tap dancing around the issue. </p>
<p>This whole thing reminds me of the elephant in the living room about which nobody talked in hopes that it would go away. Sorry boys, this is the 21st century and performance enhancing drugs are everywhere. Heck, if you suffer from allergies on the LPGA and take a Claritin D tablet you've violated the drug policy and are gone from the next 25 tournaments. Now that's what I call a punishment. Appropriate, not on your life, but you know it's unfair if you can see your ball clearly instead of trying to scratch your itchy watery eyes out of your head while players without allergies can see fine. Truly pseudoephedrine is a performance enhancing drug. Sorry , sidetracked, this is another issue entirely, well not entirely but it is a different issue.</p>
<p>Back to Mr. Player, I do not propose to understand his motive nor his timing. Nor do am I certain he's not completely addled, but I, possessing an enquiring mind, want to know more of what he knows. Hopefully he'll tell us shortly. Until then let's wait and see where the story goes and what comes to light as a result.</p>
using steroids in golf might be one of the worst things you can do to your game. itll really hype you up when you are needing to be calm. its TERRIBLE for your joints and flexibility. steroids will kill your golf game. i dont know what gary player is even thinking by bringing this up. it came out of no where. its not like he needs the attention either. i dont know what hes trying to accomplish but it doesnt make any sense to me.
The effects of Steroids seem totally counterproductive for a golfer. Also I can't think of one golfer who looks like he is on roids. Gary Player comes off sounding like a bitter old man. I loved that Rateif challanged him on that. Shows how classy the goose is and how classless Gary Player is.
Why are people so quick to shoot the messenger? When Canseco said the same thing about baseball players, everyone said he was just out for publicity. Turned out everything he said was true. And there seems to be a lot of people who are naive about what steroids and doping accomplish. It doesn't necessarily turn you into Barry Bonds or a professional wrestler. Most of the baseball players who have been caught are pitchers, not massive power hitters. And look at all of the track stars who have been caught. Those guys are cut but they aren't huge. The dirtiest sport of all is cycling and those guys look like they're anorexic. The reason these guys dope is because it allows them to recover faster, not because they want to be huge. Think maybe a guy hitting 1000 balls a day could use a little help recovering?
As for the player with the massive change Player mentioned, my guess is a certain Colombian who will remain nameless. Look at his pictures from college compared to now. He's got Popeye arms for crying out loud.

cyclers have been known to blood dope. i haven't heard about steroids and cyclers, but blood doping (to be able to hold more oxygen in the blood) in all cardio sports is definitely a problem. steroids and golfers just dont mix. all of the other sports revolve around physical exertion. golf doesn't NEARLY as much. using steroids as a golfer would be detrimental to one's game. the side effects of roids are the reason it would hurt one's golf game more than help it. gary player seemed to come out of nowhere with all of his statements. thats why we are questioning him
Everytime I see Player on TV now he kind of seems crazy. Not scary crazy, more like the crazy uncle that everyone makes fun of after holidays and family get togethers.
Not saying it isn't happening, I just don't see it. I watch golf all the time and I have yet to see a player lining up a putt and think to myself "man, that guy is on roids".
I think it is important for them to start policing such behavior, but more from a standpoint to silence the critics, until there is a policy and testing is taking place any old has-been can make claims such as this.
Nobody ever said steroids - the word is "performance enhancing" drugs. Could be anything to help recover faster, whatever. Science is crazy these days, so there is probably something that makes you long, lean, and flexible.
Thank you Gary for trying to deter the world's greatest game. It's not enough that sports like baseball and cycling are getting torn down by it, let's ruin golf as well!
I don't think he's that far off to be honest. Look at someone like stenson. A pro I know who used to play with him when they were younger, said he was a tiny skinny kid. Look at him now. Another guy is someone like simon dyson and niclas fasth, don't know if its true but they looked doped 24/7 on some drung to keep them concentrated. The look in their eyes is not the same as all the other players
I think it is pretty absurd of Gary Player to spout off like he has. I think that he and Arnie are getting grumpy in seeing their popularity dropping compared to the new superstars. I know that I personally have seen an increase in my playing ability when I maintain my workout routine. I have added a little bit of muscle mass since the beginning of the year and have made one small minor change in my swing. With these two changes I have been able to hit better shots and more consistant shots. I can't contribute this to just muscle gain, but it is a factor that has changed in my game. I don't know if a great muscle gain, such as one from steroids would really help a PGA Tour Professional. I would think that it would affect their short game more than anything. I just don't see how it would benefit their game.
that Tiger Woods guy sure has gotten big..Out of all the players who have changed the physique, he has to be at the top... everybody is just afraid to say it...
The Black Knight has won 9 Majors and 163 tournaments in his amazing carer. That's 63 more tournaments than Jack Nicklaus, whose record Tiger fantasizes about beating. Give the man some respect.
I had the pleasure of being in Players group last Sunday at Archerfield in Scotland when he had 7 birdies on his way to a six under par 66. The man can still play. FWIW, that round included him doing push up and sit up demonstarations, signing autographs, chatting to passers by and posing for many photographs. I'd take any bets right now-for any some of money that no member on this site could beat 66 from the tips at the Dirleton at Archerfield (7000 yards with notoriously difficult greens). PM me if you want to take me up on this.
I heard the steroid info first hand before the news broke and I have no reason whatsoever to doubt it
I can understand your adoration for Gary Player. Sure he is still a great player, but why isn't he still winning on the Champions Tour then? I could care less about doing push ups and sit ups on the tee's. All it takes to be able to do that, is repetition. Push ups and sit ups don't make you hit great shots or play well. Steroids won't help you play better either. Just ask Jason Giambi how much his handicap has dropped since he started the roids. I think that it is a moot point, and won't make any drastic difference in the game of golf.
Woods would be the dumbest person alive if he took roids, he has nothing to gain and the world to lose. Besides, his dad would have whoop his *ss if that crap was going on. No doubt he looks huge, but I dont think he is the roid guy, it is everyone else trying to get to his place.
I can tell you now if players on tour didnt use creatine they would be stupid it definetly works. But I will tell you what he is a moron if he thinks it is a steroid. When did creatine get banned from sports. Anyone, Anyone thought so.
Most of you who don't see how steroids could help a golfer are very ignorant as to how steroids can be utilized. Not everyone who uses anabolic steroids uses them at the high levels which make them obvious such as bodybuilders, pro wrestlers, etc. If being stronger wasn't an advantage for a professional golfer, why would many of the players even bother lifting weights?
I would bet that HGH is far more utilized however. It helps the body maintain muscle mass and reduces the aging process. And it's nearly impossible to test for it.
The comments on this thread degrading Player for what he has said are rediculous. Of course the tour guys are going to be pissed. Duh... I'm sure the MLB, NFL, and professional cyclists were just thrilled when doping was exposed in their sports... Obviously they don't want exposed for anything that's potentially harmful to their careers/paychecks.
And just so I've got this straight, it's exposing the cheaters (Player's comment) that ruins the game, not the fact that players are cheating, right. What a stupid comment...
The thing is... I believe that Gary Players is correct about players using performance enhancing drugs, but not steroids. A performance enhancing drug is self explanitory... a drug that improves a players ability in any form. I believe that almost all players on the PGA tour are taking performance enhancing drugs such as ADHD medicine... adderall, conserta, ritalin, clonopin. All of these calm players and allow them to focus better in certain situations. It gives them a mental edge. I believe that even stuff like Amino Vital, which almost every player has a towel from can help the players in concentrating... amino acids help with that... gary players needs to specify what hes saying before he says it because he started one of the stupidest rumors ever to be associated with golf. Mind enhacing drugs, yes. Muscle enhancing drugs, not a chance. Even if players did use them, how are steroids going to help you make 5 footers?
