Today was a good day. Played my home course, (Highbridge Hills 69.9/127 par 71, fescue everywhere!) par on the front nine and two over on the back. Shot a nice 73! Flirted with the number the last five times I've been out.
All the hard work, equipment tweaking, and self teaching has finally paid off. Feels great!

Congratulations.
I had to get up and down out of a bunker to shoot 79, remember that 6' putt like it was 15 years ago... or was that 16 years ago. boy does time flyl LOL (that's for Choeppner!!- hope he is doing well!!)

ah let's see, first time I broke 80. Yeah...I remember now!

Junior tournament on a short-ish course locally. I think I was 13 or 14. All I remember is Driver 5 iron to the 18th (par 5) and two putting for birdie for 77. Third place. First time under 80, first time top 5. It was a good day.

Yes shot 77 in the medal as a junior and didn't win.

Always think breaking 80 is a major break through... it's like all of a sudden your are a "good golfer".

And breaking 80 with a 73 is an impressive way to achieve it. Really, you not only broke 80 but you also broke 75 for the first time too.
Every stroke you get closer to scratch is exponentially harder. Good luck.

Congrats! doesn't golf feel sweet when you do it....

i can recall shot by shot the day I did it..... Wasn't even trying to do it....actually had given up on breaking 80 for sometime.... thought didn't have the driver game to do it.

79 on my home course - 74.5 rating/148 slope par 72....
+2 on the front 9,
+7 through 14,
birdied par 5 15 545 yards, +6
parred 16th, bogeyed 17th +7,
missed eagle putt on par 5 18th and went too far...missed birdie putt coming back and parred the hole.

in my 3rd year of playing golf (started golf when i was 33) started flirting with 80s only when I started using my 3 wood more often to keep it in the fairway....


now i threaten 80 all the time.....under 80 6-7 times since.... but have shot close to 90 a few times too....

80 was by far the hardest for me. 70 isnt as hard, ur playing well and ur very confident so just let it go, although ive only broken 70 4 or 5 times. 60 is next....

the first time i broke 80 happened to be the same time i broke 70. i had taken numerous lessons and practiced a bunch but just didnt have the time to play a full 18. before all that my last three rounds were 83, 80, 80. went out and drained a stupid birdie putt on 18 for a 69. sad thing is that i havent shot better than par since then. and that was a year ago

WOW, 73 is a great way to break 80. My first time was a 77, it was a very, very calm feeling, and I was saving a bunch of pars. Short game was working 100%. My buddy commented how I looked so calm - pars, a few bogeys, and I think a birdie or two. No theatrics, just calm measured golf.

Great stuff. My first sub 80 round was when I kept it in the fairway and either knocked it on the green for a 2 putt or just off the green and then kept chipping it stiff for a tap in. I never seemed to threaten to get a birdie but it wasn't exactly like I was struggling for pars either. It just showed the importance of the short game.

Holy crap, you broke 80 with the first time with a 73?!?! Few more putts you would have taken 70 down as well!

It becomes MUCH easier now, because breaking 80 won't be a big deal.

Thanks for all the congrats and stories. Some of you breaking 80 at junior events is fantastic! Just a little update. I played same course on Wed. and shot a 79 after bogeying 17 and 18! Just a great week for me. Maybe its a sign of things to come!

great round at a great course.. thats in NewJersey right?.. i played there last year lotta blind tee shots, thats crazy downhill par3, i acomplished my goal this year breaking 85 with an 84 at Knobb Hill

First of all congratulations, its always such a good feeling to start breaking 80.

I can finally add a post to this thread! I just broke 80 last week with a 79 at Tobacco Road in Sanford, NC. I had heard nothing but how difficult this course was before we played so a good scoring round was far from being on my mind. I usually shoot in the low 90s and have broken 90 a couple of times this year. So breaking 80 was very cool especially at a great course.

I started taking the game seriously in April 2005. I was a 110-115 shooter back then. It took me 2-3 months to get into the early 90's, and 2 1/4 years later I'm averaging just over 80.

I first broke 80 last year, around June. A nice 77.
