The US Open will never be contested at the TCP at Sawgrass. This course is not in the mold of the US Open. Personally, I would love to the US Open conducted between the West Coast and the Mississippi River. Between New York, North Carolina, Chicago and California (with the occasional stop in Ohio and Minnesota), the rota for the US Open is rather bland. There are great courses in the Midwest and west that could conduct the US Open. I would like to see the US Open conducted at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs or maybe Castle Pines Golf Club or Cherry Hills (Castle Rock, Colorado and Englewood, Colorado). Another site I would love to see host the US Open is Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club on the Ghost Creek course in North Plains, OR (Portland, OR). This course could be stretched back a couple hundred yards or so and is a very nice track. There are some fantastic courses in Washington state as well. However, I do not see Oregon or Washington getting a US Open due to the unpredictable weather during this time. July would be great as is August or September but we are talking June.
I feel that the USGA should be looking at alternative venues for the US Open and try to find an outstanding public facility to host so that most of the golfers have a chance to play the course either before or after that Open has been contested. If the USGA really wants to give something back to the game then this is the way to do it. There is no other major sport where I, hacking amateur extraordinaire, can tee it up on the same playing field where the best players in the game have. This is the draw to golf.
^ I want to say there's many reasons as to why the US opens are usually conducted east of the Mississippi. 1st off, the courses in the "rotation" now are amazing courses that the USGA can work with to make it a tough event, plus they are the classically designed courses of yesteryear that can still more than stand up to the best technology of today. 2nd, if the USGA starts putting more different courses in for US opens, we'll see less and less of the courses like Oakmont, Winged Foot, Pinehurst, Bethpage, etc. These courses are also set up for drama down the stretch. Lastly, and this is my own thought, is that there are so many tournaments out west between winter and such, that the east coast (especially the northeast) barely gets a couple tournaments to attend. By putting a tournament of US Open stature there, not only is it a draw because it's a major, but because its a PGA TOURNAMENT, a rarity to most people. Pebble Beach is an animal all its own, and I have yet to see how Torey Pines will set up next year. Its not like a major has never been held out west, but its not all that often.
Anyway, I've thought about Sawgrass as getting a major championship, but because of the stature of the Players already being considered another "major," it's only right that the crystal is the only trophy ever awarded there.
TPC Sawgrass has hosted the U.S. Amateur before why not mens & womens U.S. Open. One of Tiger's 3 U.S. Amateur was @ Sawgrass.
Tiger's first US Amateur title was at the TPC at Sawgrass. The TPC may be good for a US Amateur or US PubLinx Championship but for the showcase event of the USGA, I think the Blue Coats are a little more conservative than this. Besides, the Players is now in May so I do not see two major event, including one of the showcase events annually in the world, being held withing a month of each other on the same course. Even if the Players was moved to another venue, a Dye course is not a traditional designed course that the Blue Coats selects.
I am more pleased that Merion is back in the rota for 2013! That is going to be a tremendous event and host course!!!
Imagine the Ryder cup atmosphere on the Island Green? WOW!!!
Given our recent Ryder Cup performances, it's doubtful the Americans would be able to force a match to the 17th hole. Maybe they could switch 9s so the island green would be #8...that way we'd be sure to get to see it.
