Weather Channel uses augmented reality to explain weather at Augusta
On The Weather Channel’s AMHQ show (America’s Morning Headquarters), meteorologist Stephanie Abrams used augmented reality — computer-generated images to simulate the real world — to explain the effect of weather on scores at The Masters.
According to the video, colder weather (as seen in 2007) results in a higher winning score and higher field averages, while warmer weather (as seen in 2011) produces lower scores. The video also explains the effect of wind on the flight of a golf ball. While these may be common-sense conclusions for avid golfers, it’s interesting to see the science of the relationship between weather and golf scores, especially using such high-tech visuals.
What does this mean for Masters participants at Augusta National? When the weather is chilly and windy, as we’ve seen so far in the 2017 Masters, par is more acceptable and patience is critical.
Keep this in mind as you watch the action unfold in Augusta, and when you tee it up yourself in less-than-ideal conditions.

What GolfWRXers are saying about Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons
In our forums, our members have been discussing Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons which he has in the bag at this week’s CJ Cup. WRXers have been commenting on the switch and the clubs themselves in our forums.
For lots more photos, check out the full thread here.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- btyh: “Holy offset.”
- Glf_LU: “These are interesting. Not going to make a rush to judgement until I see them in person. It does look like a little more offset than I would expect to see in this model.”
- bcflyguy1: “Kisner is not one to make a lot of equipment changes (see the GBB driver he’s still using), so if these do have staying power in his bag that will be interesting to see. I have to wonder if there’s something different about his set, because like others have mentioned there appears to be more offset on his than I recall seeing in the samples I’ve had in hand.”

WATCH: PGA Tour players play hole blindfolded and it’s hilarious/amazing
As part of a Srixon campaign, four PGA Tour players recently participated in a three-hole challenge, with each hole being a different game; hole No. 1 was blindfolded, hole No. 2 was costumes and distractions, and hole No. 3 was alternate shot with a baseball bat. The teams were Smylie Kaufman and Sam Ryder against Shane Lowry and Grayson Murray.
Watch the full video below, since it is quite entertaining (albeit not the type of golf that Old Tom Morris surely had in mind), but in particular, make sure to check out the first hole where Lowry and Ryder play a full hole completely blind folded. It’s amazing to watch how badly Ryder struggles, and how Lowry nearly makes par.
What happens when 4 #PGATOUR pros take a day off?
Luckily, the cameras were rolling.

Cleveland-Srixon’s marketing department has been hard at work crafting these viral-esque ad campaigns; if you remember, former long-drive champion Jamie Sadlowski recently dressed as 80-year-old Grandpa Jamie to fool range-goers. That video has since gathered over 1.2 million views on YouTube.

BTW, let me give kudos for getting something right that every golf commentator seems to get wrong. Humid air is LESS DENSE than dry air, and the ball will go further in humid air. Not much; the difference is not large. But almost everybody in golf seems to believe that humid air is heavy. Not so!

As a scientist and engineer, I was really with Stephanie for most of the video. Legit info on how weather CAN affect the golf ball. But when she tried to back it up by comparing results in 2007 and 2011, I fell off the boat really fast. It is way too easy to cherry-pick results, looking for years that match what you’re trying to prove. That is like entirely too much junk science around these days. The RIGHT way to make that comparison is to look at ALL the years, and correlate scores with specific weather conditions (temperature, wind, etc). Perhaps even by round rather than by the entire tournament; I haven’t thought hard about the best way to take the data. Then see whether (a) there is a correlation and (b) whether it is stronger than might happen just by chance. That is the way you do science, not cherry-picking the data. I believe it would have demonstrated the point — but we don’t know because it wasn’t done.
