Average distance loss playing blades – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing the effects on distance caused by playing blade irons. WRXer ‘hypergolf’ kicks off the thread with his issue:

“I noticed there is an average of 1/2 to 1 club distance loss from 3-6 irons for MBs. 7-PW no problem. Same as forged cavity back irons. Is this common? There is 1* difference between MBs and CBs, but distance loss seems a bit much.”

‘Hypergolf’ reaches out to fellow members looking for an explanation, and WRXers have been putting forward their views in our forums.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • bevans0222: “For me, it’s mostly about the difference in loft. MB’s are generally higher lofts, and that impacts distance a lot.”
  • NotThatGuyOrAmI?: “Depends on your swing speed. If low swing speed and hit the ground first, with GI clubs you get back some of the distance you should have with blades if you could hit the ball correctly at a decent speed.”
  • BogeyParBogey: “It depends if you can hit center or not. I have a set of MP4s that I do not actively game, but mishits with longer irons will result in considerable ball speed loss and consequently lose distance.”
  • TigerIntheWoods: “Ball speed is the same for me loft for loft between a blade and a CB. Higher launch and lower spin are why you see pros putting more “helpful” long irons in the bag. You also need to get used to not trying to murder your irons. I’m learning how to efficiently use my weight to get distance and not pulling on the handle so much is making me much quicker and more efficient. Can pretty easily swing 4i at 110 now with good sequencing.”

Not about how far with MB irons….it is how y get there. Learn to hit them and enjoy!

Yes as loft increases the effects of perimeter weighting decrease. A blade and cavity pw of the same loft will perform almost the same on mis hits. A 5 iron will lose way more distance on a miss hit than something like a high moi game improvement iron of the same loft.
