Spieth wins with new SuperStroke Ultra Flatso
SuperStroke gained a following with professional golfers with its oversized putter grips, but it has been the company’s smaller models that have really taken off on the PGA Tour in 2013.
Case in point, 19-year-old Jordan Spieth, who used the company’s prototype Flatso Ultra putter grip in his victory at the John Deere Classic.

“Flatso” grips are different than SuperStroke’s oversized “Fatso” grips that were popularized by K.J. Choi. Unlike the Fatso and SuperStroke’s Slim, Mid Slim and Ultra Slim — grips that have a round-shaped back — the Flatso grips have a pentagonal shape that provides a much different feel.
That feel, according to SuperStroke Marketing Director Jon Luna, is similar to a pistol-style grip that many golfers prefer. Like pistol grips, Flatso grips have a ridge that runs down the back of the grips to give golfers better feedback on their hand position. But they also have the distinguishing traits of a wider flat section on the front of the grip, as well as two flat sections on the sides.
“We saw how well the Mid Slim grip went over on tour, so we wanted to create a pistol-shaped grip that was closer to the size our most popular grips, the Mid Slim and Ultra Slim.”
Spieth’s model, the Flatso Ultra, is still in the prototype phase. It’s the smallest of the Flatso grips, with a 1.1-inch diameter. The rest of the Flatso family includes the Flatso Mid putter grip, which has a 1.4-inch diameter, and the largest model, the Flatso, which has a 1.7-inch diameter.
The Flatso Ultra is currently being used by PGA Tour players Ted Potter Jr., Vaughn Taylor and Bo Van Pelt. Players currently using the Flatso Mid include Charles Howell III, Jason Dufner and Stuart Appleby.
Both the Flatso and Flatso Mid grips are available on SuperStroke’s website for $24.99. Luna said that golfers can expect the Flatso Ultra to hit shelves early this fall. The price is to be determined.
