Father first: Mahan WD’s from Canadian Open

Published

on

Hunter Mahan, who was leading the RBC Canadian Open by two shots going into Saturday’s third round, withdrew from the tournament be be with his wife, Kandi, who went into labor with the couple’s first child.

“I received exciting news a short time ago that my wife Kandi has gone into labor with our first child,” Mahan said. “As a result, I have withdrawn from the RBC Canadian Open to return to Dallas. I would like to extend my very sincere gratitude and appreciation to RBC and the RBC Canadian Open.”

Mahan, 31, shot rounds of 67-64 at Glen Abbey Golf Club in Oakville, Ontario, to get to 13-under, two shots clear of John Merrick. Mahan was scheduled to tee off with Merrick at 1:30 p.m. ET, but inclement weather delayed the tee time until 2:50 p.m. Mahan withdrew before his tee time, facing Merrick to play Round 3 without a playing partner.

Congrats to Hunter for doing the right thing. I know its sucks that RBC lost the player in the lead, and John Merrick had to play alone, which any golfer who was played in competition knows that can throw your whole round off, but Hunter did what every father should do. Be there for his wife and new born child. Always blows my mind when athletes miss their kids birth, or risk missing it, to play in the “big game” and then rush home and play the hero card. If you were a 9to5’er and missed the birth of a child for a day at the office, you would be considered a big d-bag. This story makes me want to pull for Hunter Mahan even more. Maybe fatherhood puts golf into perspective and he wins a Major soon.
