Just a situation I've found myself in. I know the USGA limit is 14 clubs and while I don't play in tournaments and just for fun I like to stick to the rules. The situation I've found myself in is that I carry 13 clubs and can't think of any club to add.

I play a 10.5 driver, 15 and 18* FW's, 22* hybrid, and my 5-PW set (ranges from 27* on the 5 to 47* on the PW). SW is 54* and LW is 58*. Add the putter and that's 13 clubs.

Driver - 245
3 wood - 220
5 wood - 200
4 hybrid - 185
5 iron - 165
6 - 150
7 - 140
8 - 125
9 - 115
PW - 105
SW - 75
LW - 45

I've thought of adding a club in between the 22* hybrid and my 5 iron, but that would either be a 9 wood (24*) or a 25* hybrid. But wouldn't the longer shaft on the 9 wood make it simliar in distance to the 22*? My game isn't quite good enough to hit a 3 or 4 iron.

Also on the other side I tried carrying a 52* gap wedge. But I always found myself with either my PW or my SW in my hands (I played a 56* SW before switching to the 54*).

Can anyone recommend a club to carry, if at all? Or should I just be satisfied with carrying 13?

if you've already tried adding a gap wedge with no success, then stick with 13

it's one more club you don't have to fight over

I recommend carrying a certain number of clubs based on one's skill level. It seems like you have your yardages filled, so don't worry about adding a 14th club.

Whoops. Just saw that. smile.gif

I just bought a V-Steel 4 that I'll play around with for a bit, waiting for it to come in from eBay.

Thanks for the advice. Just wondering if it was odd to play 13 clubs or not. Hopefully 13 will be my lucky number. So far it's been the best score I've shot over par (83 on a par 70 course, have only been playing for one year).

this is a real long shot but you could alwasy put in a lefty club. You could use it when you were in really awkward situations where the shot cna only be executed lefty

I only carry 13. I dont have a 5 wood/2 iron, and only 3 wedges including PW.

It is pre-winter season here now so I only carry 12 clubs unless I am playing from back-tee. I left the I4 and I3 at home since I very rarely use them from the normal tee on my homecourse and I try to keep my carrybag as light as possible. I could permanently leave the I3 out though since I carry a I3 Hybrid aswell, I only use the I3 on windy days or for escapeshots.. I think a lot of golfers would actually benefit from carrying less clubs, it teaches you to hit different kinds of shots with the same club.

I just bought a pencil bag and played eleven or twelve clubs for a couple of weeks - took out 9 iron, 6 iron, 3 iron. Didn't shoot any higher than normal and I now have this lovely little cut 7 iron shot I can hit about 135. The light bag is fabulous. I'm not getting any younger and I was looking at those speed carts, but I really can't face that. Maybe when I turn 50..

when i get lazy and dont feel like carrying a heavy bag ill carry a

Driver
Rescue
5
6
7
8
9
pw
sw
Putter
dorfblee
Right now I only carry 12. The last three rounds I've played- I haven't hit the 6 iron or the 9 iron. And only used the Rescue Mid 3 times . . .

Scores are a little better- has more to do with my putting than putting the ball in the play.

A friend of mine used to loop at the Olympic Club- a single 'capper there uses 7-8 clubs. He realized that by being able to work the ball he could 'skip' irons and hit a draw or a fade, high or low.

I did that once when I had 13 clubs and couldn't think of what to add. Had a left handed Ping Eye 2 sand wedge. I could hit it about 50-60 yards. I also tried a wooden 3 wood to hit it low. More direct to the question it doesn't look like you have any great yardage gaps and if your happy with 3 wedges then just stick with it.

Wow I'm surprised that people dont carry 14 clubs. I need all 14!! I'd carry more if the rules allowed it.
