Bought a copy of Golf World in the U.K yesterday specifically for what turned out to be a fantastic interview with Geoff Ogilvy.
The thing that caught my eye the most though was something that's been raised many times on here with some people agreeing and some people not.
When asked about Sergio Garcia, Ogilvy said that if he could putt, he'd win ten times a year. He's probably the best ball striker on tour.
He also said that he played a few rounds with Sergio when they were younger and if Sergio had a 15 foot putt, you could pretty much give it to him. He's thinking about it too much now.
Thought i'd post this as this is something that is debated a lot. At the end of the day, Sergio is still one of the top players in the world and you don't get to that level without being able to get the ball in the hole. It's interesting to see that other tour players are saying the same things as we are about his putting troubles though.

Can't find anything online mate, sorry. Don't normally pick up Golf World (it bores me) but i'm glad I did this time.
I'll try and scan the interview tomorrow and post it if you're interested?

I was getting excited because i've just found it but bloodredsun beat me to it.
I wasn't sure why I was Googling Golf World and it kept coming up with Golf Digest but it makes sense now. Hope I didn't offend anyone at Golf Digest by saying that Golf World is boring (but it normally is).
This is one of the best, most informative interviews i've read in ages.

Read that article too. Great read! Many interesting insights into life on Tour - Sergios putting & how American/Australian golf differs (AJGA v VPI)

sergio unfortunately seems think that minor changes will solve his putting problems but in the words of einstein " insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result". if you look at langer or di marco they took extreme variations which took them into being some of the best pressure putters

I guess he must have given it a go in practice, but i'd like to see Sergio go back to his JAT. The club cannot take the responsibility for a missed putt but it's gotta help to back to a blade that he's had success with, it should give him confidence at least. Correct me if i'm wrong but it's since he switched to TM that his problem on the greens has had come about.

it was a great article. good stuff.
funny thing about sergio's putting - he is 24th on tour in putts per round at 28.50 and 24th on tour in putting average at 1.759. maybe he isn't as bad as we thought - but he sure does miss a lot of close ones.

following up on the last post about sergio's putting...i just read this in Jason Sobel's Weekly 18 on ESPN.com (http://sports.espn.go.com/golf/columns/story?columnist=sobel_jason&id=2892246):
QUOTE
6. Putting not sputtering
For years, the popular refrain when speaking of Sergio Garcia's struggles has been his lack of a solid putting stroke. And the numbers don't lie. Since finishing 35th on the PGA Tour in putting average in 2002, Garcia has followed with ranks of 175th ('03), 129th ('04), 196th ('05) and 158th ('06) in the statistic. But the 27-year-old has spent many long hours working on his stroke and has the results to show for it. He ranks 24th in putting average and continued the strong work with the flatstick during the week. Garcia took 26.5 putts per round to finish T-2 in the category at Muirfiled Village and had a putting average of 1.652, which ranked ninth overall. For the tournament, he finished T-23.
i agree it was a mental thing and "trying too hard" but he's come a long way this year and those stats are impressive for the state of the greens at the Memorial.
regarding Ogilvy, i've heard/read he's the best interview in golf and maybe in all of sports with his dry yet witty and insightful answers. interview linked to above seems to back that up.

When Sergio is close enough to see the white liner of the hole he starts guiding the putter head towards it instead of releasing it through the strike line. If the liner was green he might not have this problem. And a green liner might help the spit to blend in too.

He just switched to that Yes Rossie-style putter...not a TaylorMade piece of crap putter. TM should stick to drivers, that's what they do best

Yeah, Geoff really has some insightful opinions. He's a breath of fresh air in the largely mundane world of golf journalism.

i just saw a highlight of sergio from 6 years ago when he was putting. he looked so much more relaxed back then. it was like night and day.

Just so you know the putter guy at TM is named Kia, and he worked under Scotty for some time.....His handmades are really good, and most guys that are putting with TM putters on tour are not using the "crappy ones" They are set up perfect for them....not to mention they are not required to use a TM putter. Also just an FYI Sergio has used a Scotty most of his career, and has used TM putters sparingly.(But could have used them during is putting problems).....
Here is a little inside story for you...The guy that putter fit me at TM on the MATT system at the TM headquarters in Carlsbad informed me that Sergio was in the week before and they worked with him for 5 hours; they fit and got him with a couple of putters that were perfect....He was making 20 in a row...numbers were awesome..etc. He goes to the tourny next week and cannot putt it into a barn......sounds a little mental to me....

Sergios putting statistics probably look so good because his ballstriking is so good that he doesnt have as many difficult putts to lag.
Ive also read numerous times that sergios putting numbers are almost perfect and that he can putt lights out on a monitor or in the MATT lab.
When a tournament is on the line, unless its the ryder cup, the opposite is usually true.
Speaking of the ryder cup, the fact that he putts so well during that event, proves that his putting problems are mental, when he is putting for his team or his nation he does it more confidently and with less pressure on his own back. Everytime he was putting this past ryder cup it looked like he had total confidence and made more putts than not.

I didn't think the putting comment was so bad. I thought what was shocking was GO and Sergio are friends. My opinion of GO just went down a few notches......Sergio should be shipped back to Spain and never allowed to leave the country.

Instead of your opinion on Sergio going up, your opinion on Geoff Ogilvy goes down. Genius.
