I have a few pairs of cargo shorts I wear to play the muni's but looking to spend a few bucks on one decent pair for better courses I play. What would be the best bet for that 1 pair? I may get another shirt to match, like something "cool mesh" or whatever. I'm tall and thin as well. Think Ogilvy if he had the muscle tone of 12yrs. worth of furniture moving.

Pretty much all the major golf manufacturers make nice, classy pleated shorts. I also generally wear cargo shorts when playing munis and most daily-fee courses. But I have a sweet pair of black pleated Callaway shorts that I wear when I want to "step it up" at a nicer course. If you go to Golfgalaxy.com, TGW, or any of the other major golf retailers web sites, you should be able to find some nice stuff. Lots of times can you can find bargains, too.
Good luck, and let us know what ya find!

I would suggest going with something with a flat front. Pleats make you look like a curtain.

Puma make a nice short. Just below knee length and a nice cut.
There's a new Puma advert with Blasberg, Ogilvy and Edfors on an airport carousel. I think Ogilvy's wearing them in the ad.
Warning to all! Shorts should only be worn with Adidas, Nike or Puma sports style shoes and please invest in a pair of socks that only come to the top of the shoe!

Polo always makes nice shorts and pants. You can find a flat front, super light weight cotton. They're my fav. If you can't find that, find a pair an old pair pants and have them shortened by your tailor.

(A) I hate short socks that only come to the top of the shoe. They look (to me) like girls' tennis socks with the little pom-pom on the back cut off. I prefer the ones that come up to the ankle (mini-crew). By the way, if you haven't tried Smartwool socks, your feet are missing out.

(B) Over-the-calf socks with shorts?!?!?! Wow! What courses have that rule?
Out of protest, I would get me some Paula Creamer hot pink knee-socks to wear with khaki shorts and a navy blue polo. Or maybe go all out and get a kilt and the knee socks that go with the kilt (maybe one of the Scots here can correct me on the correct name for those socks.)

Ack! This length sock looks brutal (imo). At this length, what's the point? I think we can all agree that anything LONGER than this is a complete disaster, but why see THIS much sock? Kinda makes it look like you're wearing high-tops. I think the idea behind the "ped" style sock is that you really don't see them at all. If you can't see 'em, they can't look like a girls' tennis sock.
(...Unless you get the ones with a pom-pom on the back.)
I like a super-low, barely-seen sock, like the Nike dri-fit ones.
(This IS a SOCK thread, isn't it? LOL Sorry for being off-topic!)
As far as SHORTS go, a lot of the surfwear companies are putting out some great plaid (and plain), flat front, longer-than-most shorts that look great for golf. Volcom, Billabong, etc. Who'd have thought it?!

Why not just keep it cheap and get a pair of shorts from The Gap. They make some very nice flat front shorts for $20-$40 (depending on sales). I have 5 or 6 pair in various colors and patterns and they look rather nice with both shirt tucked in or out.

I've never quite figured out sock length and how it relates to style
1998
junior year of High School I took some good natured teasing by teammates for rocking the knee high socks on the lacrosse field
1999
senior year of High School I go to short socks only to watch 4 people on my team that had been razzing me about long socks wearing knee highs
so I really don't care about how short or long my socks are

Any nice looking pair of pleated or flat front, plaid or solid short is fine on most courses. And, sorry, but when it's 95+ outside with 95%+ humidity, I'm not wearing pants REGARDLESS of how private the course is...not happening, no way.
Go all out, ez...get a pair of pleated/plaid/cargo shorts with matching solid shirt, plaid socks, and sandal spikes!!!!

If you're wearing shorts. No-show socks. Cut the pompom off if you have to ( I wear the pompom....but i'm a gurl.)
ESPECIALLY is you're wearing saddles. For cripes sake saddle shoes do not go with gym socks. Gym shoes go with gym socks.
The "Playing Lessons with the Pro's" kills me every time when Rocco has his black on black. He looks like he took his suit off and put on his golf gear ....but left on the farking dress socks. He needs no-show's.
Worst ever is the tube socks folded over.
Back on topic.
Polo Prospect shorts are the bomb.....I picked up a ton last fall on clearance for "the man". Tommy Bahama all day long. GAP has some good deals.....and light weight fabrics.

C Foxtrot - J Crew or The Gap make longer shorts for us tall gents that are nicely tailored. if you want to get funky you can go American Eagle for some plaid or looser fit as well with the longer length.
oh, and for my 2 cents on socks, unless you want a ridiculous tan line go with the shoe line sock and nothing that goes any higher than that. my guess would be that those of you approving of any other types of socks also wear socks with your sandals.

The shorts I wear on the course are the same I wear everyday (GAP, Old Navy, AE and Aeropostle). I just make sure to buy shorts that are appropriate and not too "worn in". I am also cheap, so I only buy if on sale and don't spend more than $25.
Polos are usually different. I live in south Texas were the temperature and humidity are high during the golf season. I typically wear climacool type polos on the course but have not transitioned to wearing them daily yet. I still sport tshirts when not on the course. Although I have started wearing some of the solid color Cherokee polos from Target. They're pretty good for warm days both on and off the course and only cost $12.

May 24 2007, 10:02 AM
I can't see spending $55, much less $85 on shorts, personally. I get mine at Kohl's, Marshalls, TJ Maxx or Stein-Mart and rarely spend more than $18, even for Dockers, Chaps, Savane etc.
You can also regularly find Adidas Clima-Cool and Nike Sphere Dri or Dri Fit shirts for $20-30 in these stores. Of course, if you want to look exactly like Tiger or Sergio, neither I or anyone else can save you from yourself.
In fact, you can walk into Target right now and buy a perfectly nice tech material golf shirt at the regular price of $18. Other than caps, I try to keep the logos down to a dull roar - no one is paying me to wear their stuff, after all.
I wear almost no cotton in warm weather anymore - I like tech material shirts, caps, socks, and boxer briefs. If it's not too hot, I'll wear cotton shorts, usually Dockers or Columbias - never pleated and seldom with any cargo pockets. If it's really hot, I'll wear Haggar "Cool 18" flat front tech material shorts or Columbia tech material shorts that I pay about $18 for.
I think pleats look really dated anymore, and overweight people look really hideous in them. I used to detest the look of no-show socks, like the comment about womens' socks with the pom-pom cut off. They don't bother me anymore, but I prefer really low quarter socks to protect the back of my heel.
