I'm a fruitcake for keeping my clubs clean.
At the driving range at my club, the base layer is very, very sandy, and the range balls get all covered with grainy sand. If your clubface has a softer metal, it will tear up your clubface rather easily. So................I use some of that blue painter's masking tape on my Driver and fairway woods, to protect the faces, when hitting balls on the range.
Last weekend, I still had that painter's tape on my D/3W/5W, and my playing partners asked me about it, they thought I was hitting a demo club. When I explained how it protects the clubface, they looked at me as if I came from MARS!
