BEND OF THE RIVER GC
Lakewood Shores is located in Oscoda, MI. I know the Gailes course is highly rated. How are the other two courses on site? We'll most likely pull a fast 3, 2 night day, mid week golf trip in June and also hit up Red Hawk GC (Arthur Hills) which is close by as well.

Any insight?

Hi Bend,

I have played the LWS courses, Gailes is obviously the Headliner, but the other courses are nice, not spectacular, but nice quality golf courses. You will find Red Hawk more exciting than any of the Lakewood courses. Lakewood offers some pretty nice packages , and again a nice place to play.

The other courses are named Blackshire and Serredella.

As JHR said, the Gailles is a winner but Red Hawk trumps the other Lakewood Courses. For fun try the little pitch and putt links course at Lakewood as well if you are staying in their villas.

The Gailes is great if you like true links style golf. My favorite course is the Straights course at Whistling Straights. The resort course at LWS is not much to speak of, although they may have done some work on it since I was there 5+ years ago.

The Gailes is OK, but there are many hazards that you will encounter that you can not see from where you're hitting from. I think that's probably intentional, as a mimic to true British links courses, but it will eat you up the first time. The second best course at Lakewood is decent. The lodging is spartan. Red Hawk is very nice, but not spectacular compared to the other side of the northern lower peninsula. The restaurant at Red Hawk is phenomenal, though. There is a reason the best courses in the state are located on the Lake Michigan shore, as opposed to the Lake Huron shore. The topography is much more hilly. Lodging, restaurants, entertainment, shopping, everything is better on the other side of the state. There are probably 25 courses on the other side that are superior to Red Hawk or The Gailes. Still worth it though if you're going to be on that side and you can't change plans.

Red Hawk is the bomb. One of my favs in the state. Beats a lot of private clubs I play in Michigan too. Gailes is a fun test too. Totally different styles fo rthe two courses, both are great.
