I even have a few personal reasons to feel good about Gore's rise to prominence. I live in Toronto, and as it happens, Gore has some family connections here and elsewhere in the province.

His great-uncle Henry Gore lives here. Uncle Henry was Jason's paternal grandfather Jack's brother. Jason's late father Sheldon, Jack's son, lived in Toronto for a while.

As it happened, I had a call after the U.S. Open from a lady named Shirley Shapiro, who lives in the same building as Uncle Henry. (Jason calls his 84-year-old relative just that, Uncle Henry, and it's a beautiful thing to hear).

Anyway, Shirley Shapiro and Sheldon Gore were first cousins. Sheldon, as many people who have been following Gore's amazing story know, died the day his son turned pro. Later Jason and his wife Megan named their son Jaxon. This was to honour Jason's father Sheldon, Jack's son. Hence Jaxon.
