I played Don Shula's last year around the same time. The course was really beat up on the back 9 due to the previous hurricane season but it was a nice track and decently challenging.

Id also recommend TPC Heron Bay which was I think about 40 mins north. Really nice layout and really difficult playing in the wind. Greens were impeccable and rolling about 13 on the stimp.

Shula's is generally not in great shape, hurricane or otherwise. I wouldn't play there in Miami if I had other choices.

One of the best public courses in Miami is Crandon Park on Key Biscayne. They played a Senior event, the Royal Caribbean, there until a couple of years ago and the course is difficult and beautiful. For non-residents it may be around $150 though, depending on time of day and time of year.

TPC Heron is a decent bet.

If you're looking for a playable course near North Miami, then Miami Shores (at 100th and US1/Biscayne Boulevard) is not a bad choice. Should definitely be under $80 and not too hard to get on.

Miami Beach Golf Club is decent-- not very hard, but a decent round of golf. This is probably over your $80 range but they have twilight and other discounts you can look into.

The Diplomat (a little north of where you're staying) is always well maintained but is also probably solidly above your $80 range.

My final course recommendation would be the Biltmore (in Coral Gables), especially if you're a Donald Ross fan. It's a hotel/resort course that is owned by the city. Again, peak rates are probably well above the $80 range but they have twilight and other discounts.
